Robert Bach reveals Microsoft's approach to the next generation of gaming; avoids addressing Xbox 360 directly.

PALO ALTO, CA--One of gaming's power players this morning offered some insight into the thinking of Microsoft as it stands on the cusp of the next generation of hardware. At a Churchill Club-sponsored breakfast, chief Xbox officer Robert Bach, dodged specific questions about the Big M's next console, but suggested the future of console gaming may be already be on your desk.

"Our view is the innovation driver is the PC, and will be the PC going forward," Bach said. While he wasn't suggesting the two gaming worlds will merge, Bach indicated that PCs are the proving ground for tomorrow's console technology, at least in Microsoft's view.

As with the original Xbox, most of the components Microsoft is working with have come from PCs, before they are incorporated into gaming consoles and optimized for gaming. But even though Microsoft first made a splash in the video game market by releasing the most powerful console available at the time, Bach made it clear that Microsoft's vision is that the technology is simply a means to an end. Since the Xbox console itself is actually a money loser for Microsoft, the company is keeping its eyes on where the profits lie: software.

Bach views the next generation of technology as a way to remove barriers for game designers, allowing them to more easily turn their visions into reality.

"The role that technology plays is, for a large part, to get out of the way," Bach said. If Bach's comments are any indication, Microsoft's next console, rumored to be called the Xbox 360, will be all about the games. Bach has no love for the all-in-one entertainment devices that were once supposed to be the future of the industry; he's only interested in adding functions that enhance the gameplay experience. For instance, this morning he touted the Xbox's ability to rip music, which gamers can listen to in-game, but which wasn't meant to replace a traditional sound system. He also pointed out that Sony's PSP portable, while a strong gaming platform, had to make compromises on its other functions, such as a DVD player that will only play specially made discs.

"You have to decide what things are complimentary functions…and what things aren't," Bach said. "I think most products that try to be all things to all people don't do well." Another challenge for the company--and in fact the entire industry--is how to bring more women into gaming. Bach estimates that 75 percent of Xbox players are male and that those numbers could grow more skewed with the release of Xbox 360. Since the hardcore gaming audience--which are likely to be the early adopters of the new console--are largely male, Bach expects a 90-10 split among male and female gamers, respectively, in the 360's early days.

Once again, Bach turned to the PC, acknowledging that casual gaming sites, such as Pogo.com or Yahoo's games section, have done a better job of attracting female gamers. In fact, the majority of gamers who enjoy these sorts of puzzle and strategy games--some 65 percent--are female.

The most significant barrier to casual gamers is the enormous investment of time it takes to be competitive with most console titles.

"If you want to be good, you have to practice," Bach said. "What we need is more experiences that are casual fun."

True to Bach's marketing background, he missed no opportunity to plug the official unveiling of the Xbox on MTV on May 12. The company has taken the unusual step of revealing details of the console in a televised event just before E3.

This article raises some interesting questions, I guess there is no movie or music playback on the Xbox 360 then, why the change of stance MS could have sold a lot of Xbox 360's if it played movies and music, anyway I'm thinking if PC and Xbox 360 are going to be developed for on the same tools won't the PC graphics be held back as the Xbox 360 gets old?

The tools are independant of power.

Also note, they didn't say anything about not having Music or Movies in Xbox360 in that article, they just said they are focusing on things that will add to the gaming experience.

Just a note, at GDC they did mention all games will have the ability to play custom sound tracks, so I would qualify that as music playback support.

theres a few things that i would clearly disagree with Batch when he mentioned the PSP, but that isnt for here.

Oh ok, he was knocking on devices than can more than play games so I thought there was no music or movie playback only games.

"It's a beautiful device, great industrial design," he said of the PSP. But "I think people will see them as separate entities."

at least he thinks it's beautiful lol

How is it a compromise to use a different type of disc for the PSP. What else were they going to use...a cartridge? That would be stupid. I think its good that they are using UMD Discs It means they will make more profit from the movies they sell for it.

kinda sad to buy a UMD movie for the same price as a regular dvd just to watch it on your psp. personally I don't have a need for a hand held because those are more like time-killers.

Cedric

Yeah i probably wouldnt buy a movie on UMD but i think quite a few would.

its much more cost effective to spend the money on a 512mb memory stick because you can get over 4 hours of video on them and then you can also erase them and put new movies on.

converting DVDs to mp4 isnt that hard.
hell if you look around there are lots of places with movies already in mp4 format to download

I didn't think I'd buy UMD movies either but with some of the titles announced I think I might take the dip... I hate to admit it but theyr very appealing.

Well people like having a tangible copy of things, music, movies, games. I guess its kind of a "worst case senario" kind of thing. I dont blame them, i always backup my stuff on disks (then loose the disks).

A big memory card though does make more sense, i mean if you are willing to put the moveies on your computer. Its reusable, efficient, and cost effective.

I went out and rented Madden 07. I figured I could do a review on the game and talk about features and comparison to its 06 version.

Madden 07 Review
By: Justin Pinter

When people think football and gaming, there is only one game that comes to mind and that is Madden. In the past years people have become fed up with repetitive gameplay and lack of fine tuning in the franchise. Last years Madden 06 was no exception, the game lacked most features players had become attached to such as franchise mode and create a player. The game also suffered from many bugs including framerate problems and freeze ups. However, EA Sports demonstrated a strong effort this year to impress gamers with Madden 07 by adding refreshing new content and improving upon the gameplay from last years next gen screw-up. Madden 07 builds on past concepts and revamps them to the point of making Madden 07 feel revitalizing and worth buying.

Let’s talk graphics:

At first glance, the graphics may not look much different to other platform versions until you watch instant replays or choose different camera angles then the traditional camera. On the other hand, if you play regularly you will begin to notice subtle differences in the PS3 version such as individual blades of grass on the fields, realistic lighting, improved character models, and enhanced animations.

Madden 07 builds on its predecessor’s game engine providing sharper textures and global lighting to cast stadium shadows and player shadows realistically depending on the time of day. The character models have also seen upgrades showing improved muscle tone graphics, flexible moving jerseys, and facial representation of real NFL players.

When playing Madden 07 on the PS3, players will notice that the animations have been enhanced not only with individual players but the PS3 showcases all new gang tackling animations. This means when you grab an opposing team’s running back and he is dragging you along, you can switch to another nearby player and bestow a finishing blow to bring him down or cause fumbles. This feature adds to the realism that past Madden games have been missing.

Let’s talk features:

Madden 07 returns with past features everyone has come to love including a few new ones. Some of the returning modes include; Franchise, Online, Exhibition, and Create a Character. New features consist of; SIXAXIS control, Mini-games, and Super Star mode.

In franchise mode, the player will be able to start with a team of his/her choice opening with summer camp training and preparing for preseason. Players will be able to choose certain players within their team to improve their skills by completing mini games at the training camp. From there players can enter the NFL draft picking up free agents and signing college players for their team. Once the preseason has started, players will train before each game strengthening their weak points on offense and defense choosing from an array of training games such as the 40 yard dash, bench press, and the running back challenge. A unique gameplay feature included in the franchise mode is the ability to have a “live opponentâ€

I could take a look, but what I know about American Football could barely fill a bubble gum card, so perhaps I'm not the best person to look it over.

One thing I noticed just as I scrolled down is that the paragraphs are quite long. Visually this makes the reader think "this is going to be hard work" and they may skim-read or just skip to the end.

The sub-headings are good though ("Let's talk about...") and help break up the prose and give the reader signposts if they're skim reading and hints at what's coming for those reading in depth.

If no-one more Gridiron qualified than me edits this by tomorrow, I'll take a look.

All the best,

Jase

Yeah the "Let's Talk about..." is kinda going to be a consistent thing I do through all my reviews. I figured it helps set the reader up for what they are looking for in terms of reading. If all they care about it how good the graphics are, they will read that chunk, look at the overall score, and move on.

Had to work late, so didn't get to edit this last night. Will take a look later today, unless one of my US counterparts (who knows his Cheifs from his Redskins) beats me to it.

Edited and Built, but not live - need Seb/Kieran to take a look at my CMS skills (still can't do images, so they'll need to be added).

Overall, the review was fine. You should be careful who you're writing this to - at some points you say "the player can..." and other times you say "you can...". The latter is much better as it's far mroe personal and the reader feels you are talking directly to them, rather than just writing for the population at large.

You also should be confident that after the first paragraph or two, the reader should know what "the product" you're refering to is. This means you can drop things like "The game features numerous modes..." and simply say "There are numerous modes..." or if you haven't namechecked for a few sentences say "Madden NFL 07 features...". Try and avoid "The game" where possible.

But good stuff, and even I - a mere limey - understood what you were getting at. Now, let me explain the soccer offside rule...
