Sony's PlayStation 3 Japanese console sales showed signs of catching up to those of the Nintendo Wii in June, according to the magazine publisher Enterbrain, as reported by Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTKU00339620080703?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews).
The Wii still managed to outsell the PS3 by 1.7 to 1, putting it at the top of Japanese hardware sales for a seventh consecutive month, but the ratio has fallen significantly since the 6-to-1 lead the Wii had the month before.
The past few months have seen the PS3 reap the benefits of a number of high profile titles not available to the Wii that may have boosted console sales, including Grand Theft Auto IV and the PS3-exclusive title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
According to Enterbrain, Nintendo Sold 235,990 Wii units of in the five weeks ended June 29, while Sony sold 139,494 PS3 console units.

Sony needs to capitalize on this momentum, I still think the Ps3 has a bit more to go to really stride with the Wii.

They Wiil, the japanese will adore Little Big Planet to death.
It'll be against the law not to buy that game.

More sales is good news, though I think July will bring the Wii back up (why are people buying that thing anyway? my Wii bores me). The problem here is the Wii still sold 60% more units than the PS3 (with MGS4 released) in June (and the Wii didn't have any titles released...noteworthy).

Hasn't everyone bought a Wii by now? Shouldn't their sales taper off to zero next month?

Does anyone know if the ps3 is still outselling the 360 in EU?

The wii will be on top untill december and then it will start to fall IMO.

I could give a rats *** about sales. Sure, sales MAY dictate what devs and pubs do for a praticular platform and how much they support that platform in the future, but hey, I'm not making any money from these sales, so why should I care? I don't work for Sony. How well the PS3 sells isn't going to effect my personal life or well being. Anyway, the Wii, even with crap games and shovleware is still going VERY strong and doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. Really, its between the PS3 and 360 now......

Some people wont accept that it is now a battle for second place. It still amazes me that people are still calling the wii a fad. I think this sort of thing proves it. Especialy if even with MGS4 out, the Wii still out sells the PS3.

I love my PS3, and I do want it to be successful, because it is a good product. However, Sony has mismanaged it so much. All of the issues that may seem to be in the past have put Sony in the posistion they are in. And there is STILL a long way to go. For instance, FW 2.4 didn't do ****. The 360 dashboard and Xbox Live still reign supreme. How long is it going to take Sony to add a feature to the PS3 that the 360 has had since day one? I feel that for the rest of this generation, Sony is ALWAYS going to be playing catch up.

And of course, all of the hardcore PS3 fans are going to continue with their credo, that "With _______ the PS3 is going to be on top. When ________ comes out, its all over for the Wii and 360". Its always like this:

- Game is announced
- Fans rejoice about how amazing its going to be
- Game is released and gets average reviews and unwhelming sales figures
- Another game is announced
- Fans feverishly claim that next game will be better (in tandem with "lists") thus the cycle continues.....

I've been on these forums for quite a while now and I read the same old **** over and over and over and over and over and over again. The PS3 is trying to catch up to where the 360 was at day one, while the 360 has been improving since, thus leaving Sony and the PS3 FAR behind. Sure, the PS3 has better peripheral and file extension support, but the XMB and online, to name a couple, its just piss poor.

I sound like I completely hate the PS3, and yet, its sitting on my desk and I play it every single day. I like it a whole lot, but I look at it, and just think how much better it should be and how much better it should sell.

That is true. Also, is it really necessary to "win" in order to be successful? I don't think Wii sales are really hurting the PS3 in any way right now anyway. A lot of the people who are buying the Wii weren't going to buy a PS3 or 360 whether the Wii was released or not. Also, because the Wii doesn't really conflict with the PS3/360, many owners of PS3/360 will also pick up a Wii.

The Wii is just a monster anyway. I mean, there are a lot of people who couldn't care less about Metal Gear Solid, Halo, or Call of Duty, but are interested in Wii Sports and Wii fit. Not to mention the legions of existing Mario fans who are happy that they finally have a REAL Mario game instead of Super Mario Sunshine. Right now, it looks like Nintendo fixed everything that was wrong with Gamecube and took their game to the next level and beyond.

wow interesting story here. people should take lessons from them in manipulating figures to suit certain angles. the PS3 has NOT been picking up in sales whatsoever. its been sitting at the 8-12k a week for the last who knows how many months now, and predictably jumped up for a week when MGS4 came out, now its quickly settling back into that range.

what HAS been happening is the wii has been selling MUCH slower than last year. actually, EVERYTHING is selling less than last year with the exception of the Monster Hunter Portable Player which.....in fact, i think DS sales this year are around 1/3 of that of last year...

That's certainly not everybodies reaction over there on GAF, more like the only one saying it. Others are saying things like this.

Wii only barely pummeling PS3 instead of totally raping it. Film at 11.

Everytime the PS3 gets a bump that allows it to sell a bit more than the Wii it closes in on its sales. But that doesn't kind of matter in the end if those sales can't be sustained if Wii simply overtakes whatever number that constitutes that bump only weeks later.

Honestly, I hope the PS3 overtakes the Xbox... But when you think of the gaming world, the xbox360 and the wii are mainstream... The PS3 is the black sheep. (Not saying its no good. Allot of black sheep software, and things are really cool, but not nearly as popular... With the PS3 lineup hopefully we can get a few more games and give me more of a reason to buy a PS3... (I do want one)

I like that one magazine says the sales are "closing in" on the wii, Kotaku says "PS3 sales flattened by the Wii"

Both equally valid ways to look at it (I mean, the wii IS still flattening the PS3 in sales), but one showing an obvious bias (17 to 10 is a lot better for the 10 than 6 to 1 is for the 1)

Maybe........ maybe... before WKS and final fantasy XIII hits, Little big planet could be the ripple in the pond that no one really expects for the japanese market. Seeing as how strong monster hunter is and what it did for the PS3, this cutesy social side scrolling platformer might just turn things for the better.

interesting theory, but i would disagree. imo, the only way the ps3 is going to get good sales right now is from big name, hardcore titles. it still has too high of a price point to attract the "cutesy side scrolling" crowd imo, tho i could be wrong.

How is it closing the gap when the Wii still outsells it?

Also, PS3 sales dropped heavily after the MGS4 week, and is now below 20k per week again and sinking towards the 10k mark. Unfortunately the PS3 doesn't have ***** in July in Japan releases wise, so it could get ugly.

The growth patten is changing, that's for sure.
Anyway PS3 sold more in first half 08 then it has been for the whole 07.
That's definatly good newsfor PS3, since Japan is the worst region for PS3.

Not in Japan. The PS3 08 sales is just 50k above the PS3 07 sales in the same timeframe.

Secondly, the Wii vs PS3 gap will obviously increase again since PS3 sales will be much worse in July compared to June, since the PS3 doesn't have anything significant in July and because sales are already under 20k again. Sales in July for the PS3 will be in the 10k-20k area, weekly wise.

At psg x3'S comment, that'snot entirely true. Games that were labeled as big have come out with better than average scores. Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and MGS4 to name some. Sure heavenly sword and lair may not be the biggest system sellers ever, but they're still pretty good games, not huge flops. Lair even updated to include better controls for free which was a big improvement.

I agree with this. I don't understand the notion that Little Big Planet is going to move tons of consoles at that price point. The PS3 might not see another significant boost until games like Resident Evil 5 and Final Fantasy XIII are released.

I'd dispute "better". I think I'd say "more comfortable to users who are used to analog sticks."

The regular controls work fine. I suspect a lot of it is just arcade reflexes in a sim game.
