A friend of mine didn't want his brand new DS Lite, and sold it to me for twenty bucks.
Need some of the best games for it. Suggestions? I was thinking of Mario Kart DS or Metroid Prime.

Mario Kart DS is a great game.....havn't played metroid prime yet but i would def get Mario Kart DS
Square's The World Ends With You is pretty cool. All of the Phoenix Wright games -- amazing writing and story. There's a few FF spinoffs that aren't half bad, Etrian Odyssey 2 is a great *really* old-school RPG (you get to, and must, draw your own map; how cool is THAT), and so on.
I would guess that if you like any video games, there will be at least 20 games for the DS you'll enjoy enough to justify paying for 'em.
Seebs pretty much suggested a great deal of what I would have said. :P
Anyway, some others:
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Dementium: The Ward (an impressive horror based game on the DS)
Lost Magic (awesome strategy RPG if you can find it as it came out a while ago)
Elite Beat Agents (music/rhythm based game)
Meteos (hard to find I'm sure, but excellent puzzle based game)
Planet Puzzle League (likely easier to find and probably second best puzzle game to meteos)
Contra IV (it's Contra in classic old school form for a new generation, you really can't go wrong here)
Castlevania Portrait of Ruin (awesome game, though maybe you'd rather wait for Order of Ecclessia to come out)
Puzzle Quest (if you haven't played it elsewhere yet, this is a great RPG/Puzzle hybrid)
New Super Mario Bros. (people rank on it for being too easy, but it's enjoyable all the same)

Final fantasy 4 comes out this month so that is a must buy. Final fantasy 3 is out now so there is another one.

I have Final Fnatsy 3, and it's not nearly as good as The World Ends With You, both from Square. It's still good, just not as good.

I agree with this statement. Buy a flash cart and you will never get bored of the DS.
Edit: Flash carts let you play any downloaded NDS game. So basically pay $50ish for a flash cart and microsd card and have the entire gaming library at your disposal.
Why not just pay for games if you want to play them?
If they're not worth the money, you must not want to play them very much.
This reminder that game developers work long hours for low pay brought to you by a programmer. :)
definently get mario kart. one of the best handheld games.
i would also recommend metroid prime: Hunters and Pro evolution soccer 2008.
and also Pokemon pearl/diamond. No one likes them anymore but i still love them majorly.
i have played it for 97 hours.
I don't care for most of the games that are available for the DS, but I highly recommend getting the two Castlevania games that has been released for it.
