View Full Version : New Bioware Dragon Age Countdown-July 9th reveal
Check it out (http://dragonage.bioware.com/)
The pc is still the best place to be when it comes to western RPG's i was about to give up on PC gaming until diablo 3 was announced, now i'm back to being excited for PC gaming ;)
I havent seen any images of the game since 2004, will be interesting to see what they have planned for the title.
What is it? What is it about? What's the fighting style?
Dragon Age is a computer role-playing game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_role-playing_game) currently in development by BioWare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BioWare) for the PC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_compatible).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac1-0) Bioware has announced the game will be released before April 2009.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac3-1)
Unlike many of BioWare's previous titles, Dragon Age is not based on a pre-existing franchise; the game mechanics and setting are being developed by BioWare specifically for the game. Dragon Age also utilizes a new game engine named Eclipse.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-1up4-2) It has not been confirmed if it will feature a toolset for creation of fan-made content,[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac5-3) and while multiplayer was initially planned, the focus of development is on the single-player campaign and multiplayer remains unconfirmed.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac6-4) BioWare co-CEO Ray Muzyka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Muzyka) describes Dragon Age as a 'spiritual successor' to the Baldur's Gate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate) series.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-ign2-5)
As of yet, few specific details have been revealed regarding the game's setting or plot, although more general information is available. The setting will be 'medieval (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval) fantasy' and the plot has been described as epic, and involves saving the world and exploring the Kingdom of Ferelden [1] (http://dragonage.bioware.com/). The developers have cited 'realistic' fantasy fiction such as George R.R. Martin's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R.R._Martin) A Game of Thrones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Game_of_Thrones) and fantasy paintings by artists such as Frank Frazetta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Frazetta) as inspiration for the game - they aim for a dark, mature, gritty fantasy setting as opposed to the High Fantasy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Fantasy) Dungeons and Dragons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_and_Dragons) BioWare fans are used to.
The designers are incorporating 'origin' stories for each race and some classes in the game. For example a Dwarf Noble will begin the game as part of the royal family in one of the Dwarven cities, and a Dwarf Commoner will begin on the streets of said city. Origin stories determine the background of the player's character prior to the main events of the game's story, forming an introduction to the game world and hours of game-play. People the player meets during the origin story may reappear throughout the game, some of whom may be adversaries.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac8-6)
While there is no tracking of alignment as in previous BioWare games,[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac9-7) the moral choices of the main character throughout the game will still affect the story. While you may save the world whether you are good or evil, the decisions you make in the process will change the world around you, deciding who will become King for example, and affecting nations and races and their places in the world. These decisions will also influence your companion NPCs, and could ultimately lead to an NPC deciding to leave your party if he or she does not agree with your approach.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac10-8)
The game may feature a newly designed camera, which will follow the party in a third person 'explore mode' while out of combat, but will swing up to a RTS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_strategy) style, top down, camera mode while in combat. As with the Baldur's Gate series, players will be able to issue orders to NPCs in real time or while the game is paused, and queue up actions such as spells and special attacks.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#cite_note-dac7-9)
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dragon_Age&action=edit§ion=1)] Features
These features are confirmed but not final:
Epic open ended storyline
Cinematic story-driven single-player campaign
Full character customization (race, gender, class, abilities, spells, etc)
The character development is class-based; on higher levels, one can choose more specialized classes
The magic system is mana-based; there is only one kind of magic
Set in a new fantasy world created by BioWare for fans of its past titles
Party-based gameplay
Top down party-based tactical 'combat mode'
Cinematic 3rd person camera 'exploration mode'
Dragon Age WIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age)
Not much is known yet, my guess is they will remake thier site before E3 (9th) and ALOT of info will be shown betwen the 9th til the end of E3.

Seems pretty interesting, and I like to see new engines in use, so this could be good :) Keep us updated Nuvian.
'Medieval fantasy' - Unoriginal much?
Origin stories determine the background of the player's character prior to the main events of the game's story, forming an introduction to the game world and hours of game-play. People the player meets during the origin story may reappear throughout the game, some of whom may be adversaries.
Bit like Mass Effect then..
It sounds good and I like Bioware a lot, but there's not really all that much that hasn't been done before. But then again it is Bioware, so it'll most likely be really good.

Well anything made by Bioware that is remotely close to an RPG, fantasy based or not? Is a GO in my book!
I did see some videos and/or Screen shots of this online somewhere a while back (IGN or FIleplanet?) Not 100% sure but if I find it again, I will be sure to post the link.
Edit: Hope I am not infringing on any copyrights by posting this link"

Enjoy!
Oh wow. I've been disappointed with Bioware over the last several years, but this sounds like a return to form. Can't wait for more info.

Funny, i can't believe why everyone is talking crap in here. Oh fantasy medievel game, done before, nothing new, etc. WHAT!?
We've seen games like Oblivion and no one ever says anything about that... And yet Bioware can make great RPG's in the future (KotoR and Mass Effect) but somehow they can't carry that over to fantasy?
Come on, Fable failed with an incredibly short story, Oblivion was good but didn't have a strong story or incentives to complete the main story... and yet when bioware, a company who is known for their attention to detail, and most of all, their great plots, comes into the picture, people complain?
Think Oblivion/Fable/KotoR mixed, and that'll probably give you a good idea of what this game will be like.
Oblivions large worlds and setting, Fables better magic and morality systems, as well as KotoR's amazing plot and deep characterization.
This game could rock my world. And it probably will. I wont say much more, cuz we don't have many details, but this game looks amazing.

I've said the same about Oblivion, even though that's the first game with that genre I really played.
I love Mass Effect, one of my favourite if not my favourite game. And KotOR I and II which is why I'm a little disappointed they've gone down the 'safe' route with yet another fantasy medieval game.
BioWare are brilliant [at least were prior to the Takeover] and can do so much more than that.
Personaly i preffer the medieval setting, will be interesting to see how this turns out.
