Are we allowing posters to use M$ when referencing Microsoft now? I say this as I have seen a number of people using it lately, but not many warnings or infractions for it. The people using it has ranged from 'I didn't know better' newbies and people who have been here quite some time.
Someone please tell me the reason why we can't use it.
it's so true, no?

I will use M$ if I want to. I don't, but if I wanted to I should be able to. We don't live in a censored society.

I don't really know what to say here..

Is it an infraction or warning? If it is, I'll start reporting it. If not, I won't waste my time. Also, if it's not, it will be ok to start using $ony then as well.
I use it because it gets the point of who I am referencing without the need to spell the entire thing.

Depends on the situation, and saying $ony has always not been allowed also. You make it sound like you're coming up with these ancient rules for the first time, lol. It's just that $ony is rarely used by comparison. I'll say I've seen it twice since I joined.

No, I asked a question. I didn't come up with any rule.
Your answer is vague.
You say it depends on the situation and then you say that using "$ony" has not been allowed also. Using "also" implies that using M$ is not permitted. So is it not permitted or is it dependent on the situation to use $ony & M$?
The constant usage of M$ is just a symbol of the general hatred/dislike of the 360, and Microsoft across most of the users in this forum.
I'd like to see it cracked down on, but it's indicative of the characteristics of the user as well. Obviously, this is just one of numerous mini-flamebait memes which are used on this forum against all three consoles.
Is it really that big of a deal? What's demeaning about it? It means they're interested in money? Believe me any publicly traded company cares about money first and foremost. That includes both Sony and Microsoft.

The answer seemed obvious to me, but I see why you didn't get it. When I said "it depends on the situation" I was referring to whether saying it gets you an infraction or warning, not whether sometimes it's ok to say or not.
The use of either has been in the past, and I assume still is, prohibited.

i know this really isnt the place, but i seriously dont understand why such a tactic is so frowned upon. why is it ok for sony to simply buy a studio and then dictate how they make their games forever, but when MS buys a game leaving the studio itself free, everyone here calls them the devil...
edit: you know what, im going to make a thread for this.
"M$" is either an admiration or insult depends on the reader, but you can't avoid the truth that Microsoft has plenty of $$$$

You have to be young if you think this is what he's truly talking about. Microsoft has spent their entire existence stepping on the little guy and trying to monopolize the entire personal computer market for themselves. This is where the M$ originates from, simply because Microsoft has always been pro-**** the consumer.
Also -- Most of the studios that Sony buys are small time studios that gain an infinite amount of development tools (money, staff, support) by being acquired by Sony. Sony rarely dictates how first-party titles are created which is more than evident by the scale of difference between most titles.

explain to me how buying a company and basically disemboweling it for the simple reason that they may be a threat to your company's profits somewhere down the line is good business? I mean that can't be the reason MS was sued and the reason that Bill Gates stepped down as CEO now can it?
I'm not really 'offended' by it one way or another, but it would be great to see some proper terminology used once in a while. Instead of using the cheap shot at Microsoft by using the dollar sign instead of 'S', why not type 'MS' or even take a few extra seconds to type out Microsoft?
It doesn't hurtto type in proper English, you know?

That's funny... Because I DO have a hatred for MS and their tactics in the game industry. I've used M$ a few times, most of the time my pejorative of choice is Microshaft if I'm gonna say anything, but I usually just say MS, and I can demonstrate my hate and WHY I hate them in other words.
NOTE: From here on I'm no longer speaking to Xoar.
$ony would really not be as accurate because, point of fact, Sony doesn't buy off exclusives to the level that MS does, nor are they capable of it. When MS throws around the money hats, it's something that Sony has no means to compete with. Of course, if M$ is only used on the PS sections and $ony (haha) only on the 360 and Wii sections, it shouldn't matter at all... Just keep everyone in their respective sections, right? And if you're truly, um, neutral, then understand people have opinions, that their opinions can get hot, and STFU about how you're better than them for not having one.

Sony buys off exclusives all the time bobtheduck, and more so than MS EVER has.
As for M$ or $ony...well, the official Xbox forums always use P$3 and $ony, and the PS forums always use M$, such as this forum.
M$ isn't a shortcut for Microsoft. MS is a shortcut for Microsoft. Stating M$ (or $ony) is intentional flamebaiting, and I would vote that they can't be used and infractions should be forthcoming for those that do. If it's acceptable, than that is fine too. $ony and M$ it is.

Get off the wagon. Sony hasn't bought up an exclusive in a long time. Their entire stance for the last 2-3 years has been the refusal to buy up exclusives.

Yup they have said it more then once in the last year even. They are dedicated to supporting their first party titles rather then dumping money on exclusives.

Funny, that's exactly how I felt when Sony did this to Nintendo back in the PS1 days and when they bought part of SE. ;)
See how the times change but stay the same. Sony was breaking into the console market and had to spend cash to get games/exclusives.
Today, MS is breaking into the console market and has to spend cash to get games/exclusives.

You do realize these companies moved from Nintendo to Sony because of the fact that Sony was offering an entirely new media output of CD, right?
They were given more advantages and had less limitations on what they were creating. It had nothing to do with buying up exclusives.
EDIT: Microsoft broke into the console market LAST GENERATION, not this generation. Find another argument.

Sony was buying a lot of Amiga developers if I remember correctly.
Bit by bit they stopped producing games for the Amiga in favor of Sony.
Those gamehouses were then bought and a mayor part of the great creative scene was gone. The best games were to be found on the Amiga.
So Sony did not buy any Ninty software houses (and if it were so, it was not much).

Yeah, I'm sure there were a TON of reasons why developers made the switch. While money is an awesome pulling force, I doubt it was at the top of the chain as to why.

Don't you? Personally, I reckon a lot of people just get dragged into using M$ to extend their bashing of the other side. Obviously, this isn't always the case, but I feel that with a lot of people it is.
I'm not in love with the way Microsoft conducts its business either, but I feel the same way about most organisations. I somewhat doubt that most people's dislike of Microsoft rests solely on the immoral things they'dve done in the past. They aren't all non-profit organisations looking out for the fluffy bunny rabbits.

I don't feel that the usage of M$ should be an infractionable offence. Sure, is the rest of the post is flamebait or troll material then that should be dealt with as that but I don't really feel like it detracts from the quality of a perfectly reasonable post. Many of the "elite" members is it and as Dave said, the abbreviation was not born from this generation, but has been around for a good few years now.
Why is it a problem anyway?

That had something to do with..that and a lot of cash. But I didn't expect anything less that the response that I got.
And MS is still breaking into the market (or was with the 360). When a console sells 100,000,000 like the PS2 did, it takes more than a generation to break into the market. That's a very large userbase to overcome. But I know that you are already well aware that.
Again, I am not suprised by the response that I got.
I guess Sony can do no wrong.
I don't need another point of discussion because no matter what is said, it will be denied by the Sony diehards. Kind of like talking to a muslim about Jesus. It just doesn't matter.

Sony bought Heavy Rain this gen as an example (as well as HAZE to name another). They still do, and they did in the past with PS1 and PS2 when competing against Sega and Nintendo.

The pro Sony people get mad with $ony as well. The big deal to me is, I would think that the rules should make it so it prevents people from getting pissed off...or so the rule attempts to make the forum a better place.
Maybe they could add P$3, M$ and $ony to the profanity filters, which would solve everything.

Here is the reason I care and the reason I started this thread. Are we promoting an open air of discussion and opinions on this site? Many would say yes. We have Wii sub-forums, 360 sub-forums, handhelds, design, etc. However, true or not M$ can be seen, rather easily I might add, as a subtle flamebaiting and trolling tactic by members of this forum. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Don't tell me its a shortcut. MS works just as well. Don't say that you are using M$ to differentiate from other MS. What other MS do people use? Magenta Screwdrivers? Mushroom Slip'n'Slides? People use it as that subtle flamebait/trolling tactic many times. The other argument I often hear is, "This is PS3forums isn't it?!?" Hey, I agree. I am here because I own a PS3. But, this causes a problem when the admins and executors of this site are aiming to promote that open discussion and opinions expressed above and encouraging people who own or are fans of other systems to discuss them here.
I am not on a high horse, I just want to establish where we are. The thing is, what counts as trolling/flamebaiting is extremely subjective. As someone so eloquently used Bon Jovi above noted, and I paraphrase here, things are in the eye of the beholder. I am just trying to be a good virtual citizen here and keep the streets of PS3forums clean for everyone. Can I get a amen?
M$,P$3 or $ony = flamebait
using those words are not allowed and will results in a warning/infraction.
