I remember back when I tried this out. It's kinda easy to learn. It takes about like 30 min. I tried to make a game but it wouldn't work for some reason. It was kind like pong.
If you really want to try making games (by the way, that's for making 2D games), then try some basic gameplay. Don't go for a RPG type game. Take it easily. Your gonna have to make alot of sprites though.
Some advice. I said forget it because I could never make anything. I tried making some action game but it was kinda hard. I couldn't draw a person. :?

why dont you learn an actual computer language like actionscript and use flash to make your games. you cant really do a whole lot with game maker. it is a starting tool i guess...............not really though, since you dont learn any coding
imo, i dont think i company that makes games using game maker will be successful.

GMax, even 3ds Max and other modelling software is not for making games, what GMax does (that 3ds Max doesn't do) is allow plugins for various customised plugins for the free version of Max, aka Gmax, because of this it allows the MOD community to help create various models for varying games, it's not a game creationg tool, sorry to disappoint you there as I'm a big modder and also an Indie Game Developer. :P
If you're looking for some Game Engines then I'd highly recommend you try Torque, it was used for Tribes 2 (if anyone remember that), but to start off from a 2D plane (which is much easier) I'd got for Torque2D, both of these all ow you to create games with ease however just makes sure not to give up too quickly when developing a game, it's a lifelong learning process and won't come at the click of a finger.

If you do want to make RPGs then to be honest don't go with a game engine, none of them are really any good so it's best with making your own engine for RPGs, surprisingly they don't take too long to make, a 2D one anyway, for a 3D engine its still not too bad, the only thing that'll take a long time to program is all the variables for items and also, the really big one is the battle system, that's actually pretty difficult. You can make them in Torque2D and Torque Game Engine and they work pretty well, just don't expect being able to conjure up anything unless you can program really really well.
But if you are interested in programming games then start with some computer dedicated books, if you want a list I'll give you some. :)
Though if you want to use an RPG engine then to be honest I can't think of one to use, maybe Explorations but just don't go with the RPG Maker, it's really not very good at all, and rather finicky.
Games arent hard to make, But good ones are ! I have made games before for my school like a dice game I made in visual basic script
