View Full Version : DS redesign (rel. 2009)
DS DUAL TOUCH IN 2009
According to several industry sources outside of Nintendo, the company is working on an updated Nintendo DS. The screens are supposedly slightly bigger, but the biggest change is that the new DS will apparently have two touch screens — so it's like a dual touch DS. That way, players can interact via the stylus with game play on both screens. Here's the kicker: Word has it that this announcement, if true, won't hit until early next year. Makes sense for Nintendo as the company stated at E3 that it didn't have any more announcements this year. Though does it make sense for anyone who buys a DS during the holidays? No, no it doesn't.

The bigger screen is a good step.
But 70million already have a one touch screen so what are they doing?
thats just stupid ;S they know new DS has come out with one touch screen we are not all ambidextourus !
Well the DSi is true. And it will not be as big as many might think
Well the DSi is true. And it will not be as big as many might think
I don't see it being as big as the DS Lite but it's likely still going to sell very well. What reason is there for it NOT to sell well? In the end it's just going to help further the Nintendo DS line already massive install base.

Well the DSi is true. And it will not be as big as many might think
Depends on what you classify as "many might think". But just to play devils advocate, do you have any reason for your thinking, or just a gut feeling?
Well for starters. What are the big advantages of the DSi over the the DSL?
It will only follow the sales trend of the current DS.
Nintendo is rehashing all games in new releases, there is not much new and innovative to play on the DS. So I say that the DSi is a waste of time. They should have come with a more powerful handheld. The small improvements mean nothing. Separate cards for downloading games??? while with the PS it's far easier. All these control methods, like the SD card but it won't work and will make distibuting illegal games even more easier.
So the trusth of developers will lower and instead of AAA games, you will get an avarage game. You know, why bothermaking a AAA game if it is going to be hacked anyway.
Besides the PSP-4000 is going to do the DSi some real damage next year.
The games found on a DS can also be found on an Iphone, even it is not the same title.
The PSP is the only handheld with comprehensive gameplay. The better gfx, well you already know of the many hardware advantages of the PSP.
I say the update is meaningless. It's a gut feeling also. If they said...more memory or a bigger procc or a better LCD...I say wow!

Are you serious? nothing inivative to play on the DS? I guess being the first touch based game system isn't inovative or new for you. But sony's playstion controler with a screen is so much more inovative than a 2 screen system with a touch screen.
You do understand that DS games can already be "hacked" as you put it. There are flash carts that are pretty well known about that have the ability to play DS games that were downloaded from torrent sites, or some direct download sites, so that is an invalid point.
So all the games on DS are also on the iPhone? since when did the iPhone get 2 3 inch LCD's to play the games? I also didn't catch that they were releasing the button based games on the iPhone as well, care to tell me how they do that?
Graphics don't equal good games, game play equals good games. If fast processors and good graphics made good games, would people still be playing NES games, or saying that the SNES is the best system? Don't think so. The DS has good enough graphics for the 20,000,000+ people that have them in japan, and how ever many people own them in america, so I don't see why graphics are going to be problem this time around, since the PSP has had better graphics since the release of both systems.
And I'm assuming the DSi is going to have more memory, since the DS lite couldn't use the web broswer without the RAM expansion, and the DSi is going to have a web broswer ready for download right when you get it.
@ Sventax
The advantages are the extra features in the system. If people don't want to use those features, they don't have to, they can simply continue playing the kinds of games the DS has been getting which are the very reason it's the top selling handheld right now. Exactly what damage will the next PSP series do? If it follows the sales trend of the DS, that will actually be a GOOD thing, seeing as the DS is currently still selling pretty well. Although initially the DSi is likely to push DS sales pretty high until things level out, but where the DS usually levels out tends to be higher than any other platform on the market.
Also, Nintendo is rehashing all their games in new releases? Not sure if you've noticed, but Nintendo has been rather silent on the Nintendo DS front, save for a few here and there like the Kirby and Fire Emblem remakes, they've largely been leaving third parties to push the system in new ways for the time being and they are/have been putting out interesting games across a variety of genres. (save for shooters and racers, for the most part) Otherwise, both conventional and innovative software is/has found/finding it's way to the handheld. That is how it has been for much of the DS' lifespan and I don't see why the introduction of the DSi would be a waste of time if it only has the potential to further boost the overall userbase. Downloading on the PSP may be a lot easier, but obviously it isn't doing much for the handheld's prospects in the eye of the consumer save for current owners who actually take part in all of those functions. If you haven't noticed, the PSP's boost throughout 2008 has been due to GAMES not its multimedia functionality or whatever features will come in the next iteration of the PSP series, especially considering the lower than competition penetration rate of both Sony's handheld and console respectively.
Also, yeah, hacking has grown on the DS but the larger install base provides greater incentive to create AAA software on the handheld versus the alternative. While it has been a big concern regarding the piracy scene on the PSP actually affecting software sales at retail, the same hasn't been true for the DS. Yeah, Nintendo and a coalition of other japanese publishers have pushed to get rid of flash carts on the market, but the piracy hasn't grown to being a tangible effect on their prospects the way it has been for the PSP. No doubt, it's a negative either way, but if you're trying to compare the two handhelds, the PSP is the one that is worse off in that regard. Also, certain games can be found on the iPhone, but you have to be a fool to think the biggest draws of the DS library will be found on the iPhone for it to be any kind of a damaging factor for someone deciding between a DS and a iPhone. (why they would decide between the two when there are different core functionalities behind them is beyond me, but hey, it's your argument... which says a lot now that I think about it) Then again, at one point it was said that the PSP is like a portable PS2, maybe that's why the PSP didn't take off the way everyone expected?
It may be a gut feeling for you, but it's largely baseless. I mean, you begin by talking in the DS' regard but quickly end up making comparisons to other devices in fields that likely aren't going to hurt the DS as much as you think it will. Heck, you don't even offer any real basis as to why you feel those comparisons (like with the PSP) will do any real damage to the DS' market.

Oh so you are delusional, answers my original question. Carry on.
really? two touch screens? what for?
I think we are all waiting for a response, so please sventax, respond to those who question your statements and gut feeling!

The DS was innovative with it's touch screen.
But the DSi is not compared to the DSl. PSP is more handy it has the PS controller in mind and it's clearly made for action games. We have all buttons on a PSP to play Tekken with ease. I have held the DSl in my hand and I don't like the idea of two SMALL screens. You look up and down. With the PSP you look at one fully colored LCD with a higher definition then the displays of the DSi and the the display is large.
You do understand that DS games can already be "hacked" as you put it. There are flash carts that are pretty well known about that have the ability to play DS games that were downloaded from torrent sites, or some direct download sites, so that is an invalid point.
This is old news. The good news is that with the SD card you can copy with ease and spread games even more further. People who don't have internet can just copy a SD card and keep multiple SD cards without having to be on the internet.
So all the games on DS are also on the iPhone? since when did the iPhone get 2 3 inch LCD's to play the games? I also didn't catch that they were releasing the button based games on the iPhone as well, care to tell me how they do that?
well they have virtual buttons on the Iphone screen with certain games.
And they do have good games on the Iphone (most are like the games Nintendo make, so I don't really play them, except for the brainchallenges and cardgames).
Graphics don't equal good games, game play equals good games. If fast processors and good graphics made good games, would people still be playing NES games, or saying that the SNES is the best system? Don't think so. Are you serious?
Ask the CAnadians what is doing well in Canada.
InJapan oldskool is doing quit well. DS/Wii/PS2 all of these have very competitive prices but now that the Xbox360 have lowered their prices. I want to see how competitive the Wii with it's really will be. Sony is right...by saying "we want Xbox360 to succeed in Japan"
Wii will very soon be WiiHD because this is the next logical step if price won't make a difference anymore. Because if you look at the games, there aren't much AAA games on the DS
And I'm assuming the DSi is going to have more memory, since the DS lite couldn't use the web broswer without the RAM expansion, and the DSi is going to have a web broswer ready for download right when you get it.
And if you have one, you know how slow and simple the browser is*not saying the PSP browser is slow, this has nothing to do with the PSP hardware).

Pftt, two touch screens, and a NEW library of games ONLY for this new DS, and DS owners everywhere will have to suffer lack of, or insuperior games, or be forced to upgrade their hardware if they want all the latest games.
Unless games that come out on both systems have two versions, but i dont see that happening for many titles.
Then again, First Party games will most likely only use the two touchpads for the first year anyway.
Odd.

There is only one touch screen, Sventax posted an article back when sites were confused as to whether or not it had one or two.
