View Full Version : Can Even Microsoft Afford to Buy the Gaming Market?

This is the day of the big discount: all of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 units have officially dropped price by $50, giving the company the cheapest entry point for the would-be gamer. But this smacks of desperation in a whole lot of ways, for example, like this being the second price drop Microsoft has tried this year alone (http://industry.bnet.com/technology/1000175/microsoft-xbox-360-making-it-up-in-volume/). When you consider the number of units they sell normally and how financially badly that Microsoft does in this market, you have to wonder if even with those deep pockets it’s possible to buy enough Christmas cheer.

The Xbox 360 Arcade, the model without a hard drive, is now $50 cheaper (http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/05/xbox-360-now-cheapest-console-in-the-us-game-on-santa/) than the “perpetually ’sold out’ $250 Wii and 80GB PS3 selling for double the price.”

Last year Microsoft sold 4.6 million Xbox 360s, largely driven by the availability of Halo 3 — about 1.3 million in December alone. Sonysold 2.6 million PS3s and Nintendo sold 6.3 million Wii units. Nintendo is dominating the market because it’s cool. There are different types of games, people like being able to move around to direct their actions. By mid-year, except for one month, the Wii has been the top selling console (http://www.slipperybrick.com/2008/07/wii-outsells-xbox-360-in-the-us/#more-11740) since its introduction, at least in the US.

The Arcade was only about $250 before, so if it couldn’t attract enough attention compared to the Wii, is $50 going to be enough of a difference? Not when retailers can’t keep enough units on the shelves even before the holiday season. As for Sony, Microsoft already sold more then them last year, and that was after the PS3 price drop.

What Microsoft realizes is that success isn’t about the hardware. Gamer preferences are about two things: the actual gaming experience and the games available. Microsoft is losing badly on the former; Nintendo has blown everyone else out of the water with the wireless, motion-sensitive control. In fact, the company has largely held both the number one and number two spots for game console unit sales (http://www.slipperybrick.com/search/wii+sales), with Nintendo DS being second.

As for games, the Xbox 360 floated on Halo 3 sales last year, because that was the only platform for the wildly popular first person shooter game. That’s not happening this year, so Microsoft is falling back on what is generally the last resort of a desperate vendor: a big price slash.
Figuring on the old rule of thumb, that 60 percent of sales happen in fall during the holiday season, that’s 2.76 million units at the lower price. At $25 less revenue per unit (given that probably half of the money is cash the resellers don’t see with the new list price), that’s a loss of $69 million at last year’s volume. Given that Microsoft revenue in its Entertainment and Devices Division was $6.08 billion and it still lost $1.89 billion, the additional money gets lost in rounding.

I’ve mentioned this number before and admit that it draws me the way traffic accidents magnetize many heads. Microsoft has been losing money in this area for years, and over the last few, at least, the loss has been getting larger, not smaller. How long does any company — and its investors — want to subsidize product lines that don’t carry their own weight?

It's a tough market out there for game companies.

So am I. . .So am I.

I'm not sure if this article is only talking about US sales or worldwide sales.

lolwut?

Who has the highest attach rate again? I wouldn't give the "best gaming experience" title to the Wii because of motion controls. The games aren't there for me. There is no unified online experience either.

I'm pretty sure the sales of GoW2 will carry the 360 this Christmas. Not too sure about Fable 2 though. I'm really looking forward to Fable 2 but will it have the same marketing clout that Gears will inevitably have?

I wouldn't be surprised if Gears 2 turns out to be the top selling game this holiday season. (Although perhaps some random Wii games I know nothing about will shred the market to peices with astronomical sales XD.)

If they don't even know that is wrong, i don't think i want to read the rest of it...

I still think that the price drop was an act of desperation because the PS3 was finally outselling the 360 in the US. The US is the only market that 360 is leading in and if the PS3 keeps on outselling it. Good bye 2nd place, hello 3rd.

Desperation/agression, whatever you want to call it; the net effect is the customer now has the chance of buying a $199 360. This will do nothing but drive competition which is good for all us consumers.

YAY for competition!
Yeah, that's true but that's from a consumers perspective. I'm looking at it from their perspective.

The 360, according to MS, is leading in the U.S., Europe and Australia. Japan is their only sore spot.

Australia I understand but not by a lot but Europe. Last time I checked, the PS3 overtook the 360 in Europe. Europe was the main reason why the PS3 outsold the 360 last year and its going to be the same reason this year. Point Blank!!!

Sony stated that they were beating MS in PAL territories, and Europe was mentioned. MS came back and said they were leading by 750,000 units. So most likely, MS is leading in Europe as they stated, but Sony could be leading in combined PAL territories, which includes Japan.

So, Sony is really only leading in Japan.

I think it was United Kingdom they were talking about. Sony was/is leading Europe.

And if what you are saying is correct, we have two companies saying different things, what makes one correct over the other?

EDIT:
I found the article where Microsoft stated that and they were talking about Europe....so oops...but still, it's either Sony's word or Microsoft....unless Sony's press release included all the pal territories. If Sony didn't say they were ahead just in Europe....I am not sure what Microsoft was correcting them on...

EDIT: Well, I did find the article where Sony mentioned Europe specifically....so it all comes down to, whose word are you gonna take?

Or who do you like more?

Anyway, Sony launched the PS3 in March, 2007 in Europe....and they caught up with the 360 pretty fast.....so by now they probably are outselling the 360 in Europe, probably not in the UK....but definitely in other parts in Europe.

I don't care; I don't care; I don't care if he comes round here
Got my beer in the sideboard 'ere; I don't if he comes round here

Seriously, this is such a great year for gaming that it's costing me a sodding fortune. I love the price drops, whatever the reason, because more of my friends are getting PS3's and 360's. We can all debate the why's and wherefore's but after all is said and done we've all done pretty well out of this gen so far and it's just going to get even better.

Desperation (or whatever the real reason is) ftw!

Sony should surprise everyone and do a price drop on the 40GB sku and introduce the 80GB sku with 60GB features except backwards compatibility.

They most likely are going to do that because they are a lot of 40GB left on shelves.
