View Full Version : Seriously. What is so great about Fable 2???

Glad you asked. :D Here's a list:
*The dog. It is cool having him fetch items, find treasure, etc. Great addition to the game.
*The dialogue. Probably the best narration I have ever heard. Great writing.
*Combat. Simple and fun. Swords, ranged weapons, and magic. Not overly complex.
*Breadcrumbs. Much better than the navigation techniques of Oblivion and Fallout 3.
*Diverse path of good and evil.
*Real life aspects. Eat too much and you get fat, for example.
*Beautiful world. Extremely colorful.
*People and things glow different colors based on their available interactions. This game tries to make everything easy.
Seriously loving this game. If you haven't tried it. Just buy it. It is great.
Its a good game, but for me, its a bland, water downed RPG designed for RPG virgins. Again, a good game, but not my cup of tea.

I think the simplicity is what I am enjoying. Sure I love the more complex RPGs, but Fable 2 is a nice change of pace. IMO, this may be the best RPG this gen. Yep....better than Mass Effect.

For me is the most beautifully crafted in detail and art world in a game yet, it has style, humor and the most terryfying moment i had in gaming (winter lodge), unique quests, fluid and fun combat, the lore and monsters are great, and the moments in some demon doors and the sister world are something incredible and many many more
I do miss challenge and monster variety though, still is one of my best games ever, can't wait for the expansion

Just because a RPG is different, does not mean it is not a RPG, and i think has every chance to win GOTY exactly because it is partly an adventure and simulation too, and not the standard RPG deal

I don't know what's great about it. I don't plan on getting it until they release it, the expansion, and lots of extra content on a package together like they did on Oblivion. People raved about Oblivion and my understanding is that this game is similar to it except it's third person. I personally prefer JRPG's to WRPG's so I thought Oblivion was okay but nothing special. I thought Two Worlds was just as good as Oblivion (once you turned off the grass). Sure Oblivion had more content but Two Worlds was actually fun and didn't have really annoying monsters that somehow always leveled up with you.

Remember though, you need to go online and find the "console commands" for it. Use the one that turns off the grass and you'll be able to play it just fine. Most of the reviews were based on bad performance just like for TLR. With Two Worlds you can fix the vast majority of the issues by turning grass off.
I found this link for you.
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/twoworlds/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-44149236&pid=932336
You can turn off a bunch of other stuff too but I found that turning off the grass was fine and the other options didn't help that much. I'd suggest looking for it on Ebay but I'm not sure how cheap it is anymore. I know when I got it, I paid very little for it. I don't remember how much any more. I got it back at the start of the year (or was it the end of last year?).
And you can have sex with a guy then kill him. Then have sex with a girl and kill her. Then kill everyone in the whole town. Awesome.

I got mixed reactions with Fable II. At one point I think this game was fun but at other times, I felt really disappointed with it. For one, the main story is a joke for a RPG. Western or Japanese RPG, storyline is completely lame and to make matters worst, it's completely short! Graphic wise, I loved it. The art direction was great and it really does help you get a good feel about the world of Albion. You feel immersed in the world. The whole evil/good choices I believe were pretty weak and not as diverse as I thought it was at first. Worst part? It doesn't have any effect whatsoever on the ending! At the very least, have one ending for each moral choice, like Bioshock. Speaking of ending, that was one of my biggest disappointment with this game. What I thought was super cool was the whole money thing. You earn money even when you aren't playing the game!
FFS you don't even have a ending boss fight! How lame can a RPG get for not having a memorable boss fight?!
Like someone in the beginning pointed out, this game serves as a good 'starting point' for new RPG comers. It's very easy to pickup but later on, you would expect more but the game doesn't give it to you and you'll be left feeling disappointed as the game could have been so much more. With that being said, I sold my copy immediately after completing it.

Reviews were horrible indeed, the game does have some issues, but is a grand RPG, and very fun to play, if you are ready to save often and overlook some problems
I would check the net for tips on avoiding the worst problems before starting a game
I had a blast playing as mage/summoner, i had a small army by the game end, was so amazing, the places you visit are also varied and unique, monsters do not scale, so stay away from those dragons too :)

It works as a RPG lite but as Zero Punctuation puts it. Shallow fun.
The fun factor is the key, shallow or not. Frankly, I'm enjoying this game more than Oblivion, Fallout 3, or Mass Effect. Yeah, it is more adventure than RPG and that is probably why I am enjoying it so much. Although ZP ridiculed some of the things you can do, such as get a job, a wife, have a kid, etc., and dismissed it as "why would you want to", I think he missed the point. Or rather, as is typical for ZP, he harps on something just to be funny and goes over the top in his criticism for effect. Back to the point.....I'm an adventurer with obligations back home. I have a family life that if I want to keep it happy, I have to give it attention. Or if I'm a jerk, I can be a deadbeat. Or I could skip all that altogether and stick to the traditional quest-completing aspects of the game. I think it is cool I can get a job and develop the skills in my trade. Yeah....the actual "work" is rather monotonous and is just a simple exercise in hand-eye coordination, but it is still cool and a nice way of making money rather than just the find-stuff-and-sell-it mold of typical RPG economies.
See....as I'm talking about all this, suddenly the word "shallow" doesn't fit. If you skip all the things that you CAN do then yeah, the game is going to seem shallow. If you approach this game with the typical WRPG mindset, you'll be disappointed. This game is part RPG, part Adventure, and part Sims. Your not just advancing your character sheet in this game, as with most RPGs. You are molding your character's personality. Some games like Mass Effect have tried this, but the result is much more scripted than in Fable 2. Your actions in Fable 2 have a more fluid result on not just yourself, but those close to you.
I look forward to playing this game a second and third time, but rather than a focus on WHAT I want my character to be, I'm going to decide WHO I want my character to be. And that, imo, is what makes this game special

The boss fights were pretty poor. That would be my main gripe with it.
I agree, that was my main problem too, even though i have played it 120 hours
But if you read my troll hunting guide, you can find some amazing encounters with trolls and small armies of zombies, etc to go along
Really some of the best fights in the game, you just have to kill cities whole and get community service
http://community.lionhead.com/forums/thread/3242735.aspx
@LeisureSuitLarry
We are thinking 100% the same about the game as it seems, it is one of my best games too, exactly because it is both a RPG, adventure and a simulation on top, and you can really role play in ways other games do not allow, feel part of the world above all
And i did enjoy it far more than Oblivion and far more than Fallout 3

Graphics are great very simple game but its nothing special
It is the best game i have played, maybe not the deepest RPG, but as a game is better than anything i have played with, and far more fun and addictive than any JRPG or games like Oblivion, Mass Effect etc
It is all an opinion, stop trying to suggest your opinion is better than anyone elses opinion, it is pointless and childish
Fable 2 goes far beyond anything artistically, has emotion that most games lack, and is adventure and simulation too, not just another ordinary RPG, so it offers things that other games can only dream of doing

Yeah, you can pretty much do whatever you want with your character's appearance. You can go to stylists and tailors to adjust your character's looks. In fact, the NPCs will make comments on your appearance. Not only that, but your actions will adjust your appearance as well. Each too much meat and you will grow fatter. More melee attacks will create scars and such.

I like the game but its far too simplistic. I like the idea that hes trying to broaden the appeal of the RPG because they aren't things a wide audience can get into. It has a lot of interactive depth i.e. things which distract certain players to lengthen the game like economy, relationships, the dog etc... But it seems that the hardcore side of things got neglected in favour of that casual audience. Combat and the game in general is far too easy, Ressurection Phials are completely pointless and so much effort was put into balancing out the 3 skills they all became overpowered.
One thing i loved though was the magic system, for once in a game magic isn't gimped. Final Fantasies melee characters could do 9999 damage forever but magic characters were limited by MP. Baldurs Gate mages were limited by memory of spells and required resting after every battle just to get them back, it was also similiar in Morrowind. In Fable 2 it seemed more like an action film where the hero casts spells with ease constantly. Its great but its not without its flaws, spamming to level 5 in a spell then using that against mobs was far too easy.
Overall i liked the game but it seemed too 'gimmicky'. Too much thought went into people being able to access the game than adding more content for those that can pick up game easily and explore games to their depth. They also seemed to confuse realism with fun in certain parts; working to get money? Yeh it works in real life but it isn't always fun and the mini games certainly weren't fun especially when the occasional lag messed up your multiplier.
I hope some of the ideas created in the game are 'stolen' (seems a popular interpretation around here anyways) because theres a LOT of good ideas in Fable 2.

Thanks for the reply. I never bothered with the first game, but a lite RPG sounds like fun. Hardcore RPG's do nothing for me; I've only had the patience to play through one (and that's only because it centered around street racing and car tuning) and got knee-deep into another (because it featured artwork and character design from Hyung Tae Kim... before my Datel memory card destroyed my save).
Typically, they're too slow and plodding to keep me interested... Fable 2 sounds like it may be more my speed.

Fable 2 is obviously far more amazing as a game than FF series, and has a real huge 3D world, with stunnign detailed environments and art
As a cinematic experience though FF wins of course, and has as detailed art, even though the worlds so far have been very resticted, so let's say both are must buy for any real RPG gamer, and have their advantages
As for SO4, and Mass Effect they could be 1000x better than WKC, have you seen the latest videos ? The visuals and combat seem less than good, to be polite, the world design feels very generic as well, i have lost all my hype for that game, and i was hyped alright a few years back that is
As for FF13vs, yes that will be great, but not exactly the end of the world as you make it seem and nothing comparing to FF13 of course, the main game, at least for me that like fantasy over mature realistic trying to be games
And please, stop comparing Western RPG' with huge free roaming worlds, with games like FF, won't work, because since i like open free worlds myself, FF13vs is far behind games like Fallout, Oblivion, Two Worlds Temptation, Divinity, Mass Effect, Fable 2 etc
It is a matter of choice, if you like JRPG's better fine, but it is not like everyone like to be taken by the hand in constant cinematics better than roaming in huge detail open worlds, and actually choose what to do and where to go

The arguement I see in this thread is funny.
WRPG's and JRPG's while both being RPG's are really nothing alike (besides a rough leveling system, and an extended story). I have a much harder time getting into and staying interested in a WRPG, but that is my preference. To label a poster a fanboy simply because he likes Fable 2 way better then a Final Fantasy is obsurd.
I, personally dont agree, but if I can like the one sub-genre way better, then why cant someone else like the games the exact opposite?
While Fable 2 is on my queue, I am in no hurry to play it as I watched someone on my friends list get over 900 points in it during a 1 week timespan. I just spent a month and a half playing tales and only have 850 or something. I like my RPG's to last, and have the story go on forever, but I can understand where some people would get bored from a game that would seem "Dragged Out".
Comparing the games though is like comparing a boat to a motorcycle.
Both will get you to your destination, but they take totally different ways there.

All of the positives of this game leave my mind when stupid glitches pop up. Twice now I've had to repeat significant sequences of the game because once I finish, nothing triggers so I'm just left sitting there in silence with my cohorts, I have never had this happen to me in games (guess I don't play enough games?)
It's so frustrating repeating battles that shouldn't need to be repeated. At this point I'm just trying to finish the game for the sake of finishing it.

The two places it has happened to me are:
1.) After Garth destroyed my collar during the escape of Lucien's place, when I fought all the way up to the commandant's room, after looking down at the docks nothing happened.
2.) After defeating the Giant Shard that you fight when leaving the escape tunnel in Bloodstone. Defeated the shard and my whole team just stood around doing nothing.

Definitely an improvement. I hope graphics are not the only improvement cuz frankly. Two Worlds is crap. Sorry, but it is a ridiculous Oblivion wanna-be. Shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Oblivion, much less Fable 2. The graphics suck. The gameplay sucks. The dialogue is hideous. The story grips pulls you in with the weight of a feather. Two Worlds got crap reviews for a reason.

I wasnt doubting you at all. I was only saying that I never encountered any glitches during my playthrough. Nothing more.

As with the original, it was a good game, fun, kept me entertained; but incredibly short. The story was very weak, and the ending was so much worse than the first (which I hated about the first). However, good game overall.
Fable 2 is Oblivion but more approachable.
I think people who grew up on JRPG and hated Oblivion would have a better time with Fable 2.

When I am able to play Fable 2 I'll confirm if what you say is true, I couldn't uninstall Oblivion fast enough :p

Man, seems like Oblivion is really a love or hate game.
While some people hate the ever loving **** out of it, it is the only RPG I've ever clocked in 150+ hours on.

My biggest thing was that monsters leveled with you...that annoyed the heck out of me. I like to grind and make the game easier on myself
I didn't think you were doubting me Radgamer, just wanted to be more specific in case anyone else had the same problem at those points.

It was definatly not a "redicoulous Oblivion wanna be" to those that played it, and to me
It is a far imo better RPG than Oblivion was or could ever be, the quest structure is better, the magic system better, the variety in quests far better, the variety in world design 100x better, the variety in skills and things to do far better etc etc etc
The graphics were nice, not Oblivion like, but far from sucking, they just served their purpose, it also had its great looking moments
Of course it was their first ever RPG, so of course TW2 will be an improvement, i mean if they could make such a great experience in their first try on two systems, they team seem like behemoth strong to me, and of course will be far more carefull in polishing the game this time
I do not know how you formed your opinion on Two worlds RPG gameplay, it does have akward combat, but as a RPG shines, check IGN reviews, they say so too, the game is a great RPG, for a real RPG gamer like me was one of the most enjoyable experiences, far above Oblivion that got boring from the first few quests and similar dungeons and empty outdoors
But we all have our opinions i guess, thing is for everyone that says the game sucks, i can find 10 that say it was a great RPG
Also has sold very well, about 400.000 in US alone on 360

Probably :)
Consider that i was a PC gamer for years before i moved to consoles, so i can easilly accept unpolished games like TW1 and find what is good in them, thank god i did not run in any game breaking bugs :)

i bought the game and honestly they had some great ideas, and features that had potential. More than just features that had potential, the game could have been a huge success but, what could have been great was just a mediocre title. The good ideas they had, they did not implement well. Hopefully they can sort it out for the next game. I won't get hyped about it, but I will keep an eye out for it.

well, I am one that is not that looks at art direction, I leave that to the other people. All I want is a fun game to play and Fable 2 is exactly what it is...a fun game to play. Yes, if it's eye pleasing it makes it better but I'm not concerned about art direction, or how many polygons a game has, etc etc. I just want a game that looks good and plays great. Fable 2 looks good and plays great, to me that is all that matters.
