Please vote as honest as you can. I've also added a "decline to state" as well. Just remember that this is all hypothetical, so don't take this too seriously. The choices are made as abstract as possible to allow for discussion, so don't bite my head off if you don't see the exact choice.

Well if I hit it and it belonged to someone, I'd take full responsibility because my morals tend to eat away at me with things like those. Stupid Conscience........

i have a messed up story for you all, if you live in oregon you might have heard it on the news. my uncle's brother hit a dog in his car, and went out and clubbed over the head with a hammer to kill...

You only make things worse by running away from the problem.

Own up take responsibility and sleep well at night.

Well, how can I take resposibility when it could very well be the dogs fault. How do I not know that the dog was feeling suicidal that day and decided to run out in front of my car or that it was mentally unstable. I would most certainly stop and check to see the condition of the dog and my car though...

It depends, if the owner is around then take responsibility but if no one is around drive away

I would take responsibility of it. I love dogs and any pets, so if I hit one with my car, I'll take responsibility of bringing them to the nearest vet clinic.

To a degree if the owner is around he can take some responsibilty for not having the dog on a leash.

If I was driving along and I hit something like a dog, cat or w/e then I'd get out and see if its ok. If it was dead then I would try to find the owners because when I was younger someone ran over one of my cats and they just drove off which is worse in my opinion. If it was still alive then I would try and take it to the vets and then to the owners.

I'm pretty good at missing animals on the road, I've dodged 2 rabbits, 2 hedgehogs, 1 badger and 5 mouse/rat things. The only things I've hit are already dead on the road haha.

Where is the option for "check to see if any damage was done, if so: drive over dog again for retribution."

I would think a dog running loose would be a stray. If somebody were to own the animal, it would be his fault so I would sleep at night. I don't see what "taking responsibility" means in this situation. Does it mean finding the owner and tell him/her that their neglect and stupidity was the cause for this accident? The only thing that would bother me in this situation is that fact that I killed a dog. I couldn't care less for the owner in this situation.

I mean I know the a dog's leash might escape your hands or you might have left the door open. I know it happens and so if I know the owner of the dog to be responsible I would say something different.

Weird thing is that I have run over a total of 2 dogs since I started driving at 16, the first one I was going about 50 MPH and it ran out from behind a fence and into traffic and it was either hit the small dog or possibly cause a huge wreck trying to avoid it and since I only had a split second to make the decision, woofie had to be taken down...the 2nd time I hit a dog it was dark at about 11pm and the lady was checking her mail at that time and the dog shot out of the house and ran into the street, I tried to dodge it taking down a mailbox in the process but the dog just kept running toward the car, this one I got out of the car and apologized to the lady and helped her with the now crushed dog. What is also weird is that both dogs were small poodles, so my brother named me Poodle Slayer which was the name I used for the longest time until I saw Southpark's "Not Without My Anus" episode with Terrence and Phillip, which from that point I have been MonkeyClaw®!

I'd take full responsibility for the dog and do whatever must be done. If it were only injured, I would take it to the nearest vet and offer to put some money towards the bill. I'm a man who owns a fairly decent moral compass.

If it were dead, I'd try and locate the owner and apologise as much as I can. I'd hate to lose a pet like that and not have anyone take responsibility or apologise for it, so I'd want to take the right moral path and do the right thing.

Clean your car, yell at the dog (even if it's dead) and if it isn't, finish it off and cook it.

No?

Depends. If I'm in the middle of nowhere, I'll just drive off. If I'm in town or urban area, I'll take responsibility.

I would push it down some stairs and act like nothing.

Stairs seems to solve most problems.

I think that "taking responsibly" doesn't exactly mean "taking the dog to the vet", "bury it", "find the owners". Taking responsibility is pretty much reflecting on your past actions. If you drove away(which I don't blame most), and not feel anything or even reflecting on what happened: that's not taking responsibility. If you lament or even think about it over the fact you ran over the dog then that's a form of taking responsibility. It's how you reflect on your actions and weigh the consequences that dictate responsibility or not. For example there are 2 verses that convey reflection.

"I hit your dog"
"I ran your dog over"

-However taking responsibility doesn't necessarily mean that you do a morally-good thing for the dog. It's simply the act of reflecting on your actions and paying some mind to it. Whether it be taking the dog to the vet, taking a hammer to its head and burying it, or even putting the car in reverse and running the dog over again.

There's the subject of whether or not the dog belonged to someone. I intentionally left that out because if I had specified, then the choices would've been too skewed and people here would've voted based on their obligations, not their beliefs. Example, hitting a dog that belonged to someone would merit as a hit-and-run and is punishable. However hitting a stray dog isn't. So what's your obligation then? and even more, what's your belief on the issue and your feelings towards responsibility of your actions?

I would've picked cats instead of dogs, but people seem to relate more to dogs than cats anyhow. I personally feel that anyone that hurts animals, especially dogs with intended-malice aren't worthy of contempt or mercy. With that said, what's to say about people who can't control themselves? If you hit a dog on purpose, or accident while you were DUI or DWI. How does that reflect on you as a person? For people that chose to drive away: do you think you're a bad person? Or maybe you did something justified?

Would your initial opinions change after watching this video? (click link below)

I agree. I think a lot of these guys aren't quite understanding. I know at least in California, it is illegal to leave a dog that you just hit. You need to at least leave a note on the dogs body. I think it has something to do with "personal property".
Hitting a dog will always be an accident. Unless you are some sick scumbag.
Taking responsibility is helping the animal if possible. By most circumstances would be to alert the owners. Hopefully the dog has tags.
Any decent dog owner knows their dog should not be in the street and would unlikey blame the driver. Any and caring dog owner would want his dog back be it alive, dead or injured instead of lying out in the road somewhere.

Crazy...I didn't know that. I just found this too:

I wonder how many of dog owners really are "decent". I'm sure most would be angry and unwilling to be responsible enough to say that their dog should not have been in the street in the first place. I just know how people are...

I would take whatever responsibility that I could if I hit a dog. And I guess here in California, I have to report it to the authorities...call the local police station, I guess. Hopefully I won't be hitting an animal anytime soon, but I suppose that's what I'd do.

I would like to say take responsibility.. but if there was a high percentage of no consequences then drive off, but not before trying to move it somewhere safe or see if it's only minor.
And 'decline to state' is obviously people who want to say drive away, but don't want to seem heartless.

Wow to some of you, wtf.

Someone hit my dog with their truck a couple years ago, and drove away. Luckily my dog survived, with only a broken leg. This isn't funny.

Cry a lot unless it is a pitbull, then rush it to a vet and call the owner...

I'm a dog lover, I couldn't leave it or kill it.
