They said they asked a Sony repa nd he confirmed it. Listen to their podcast above and its in the 1st 5 minutes. They also talk about other PS3, 360 and Wii stuff.
This is great news for anyone looking to buy the 20GB version and will want to upgrade at a later date.
Oops. Wrong section  . Can a mod move this to the PS3 section please.

Alright....maybe the guys in the PS3 section would appreciate this more...

Yeh, I just realised. My bad.
That's interesting and great for us, although it may make things harder for developers. External hard drives vary in transfer speeds, and are generally significantly slower than SATA HDD's, which could complicate HDD caching.

Depends though to developers everyone is getting a SATA HDD big or small, the WiFI, Memory stick, and HDMI is all outside of the developers awareness.
Although this would kill the thought process of thinking that the "Core" version isn't upgradeable to the premium would look more messy on the outside but meh.

Holy crap---this system is going to be hacked in the first week.
Holy crap---this system is going to be hacked in the first week.
It was hackable the moment Sony decided to put Linux in the OS, and make the Hard Drive standard.
So is Linux confirmed to still be on the HDD? I'm very interested about that.
Please note:
This does not necessarily imply that the media storage devices can be used for game saves, arcade content, etc.
The 360 can also do this same thing, however such media devices are used specifically for plug-in media like music, video and pictures. It's not clear what removable HDDs via USB can be used for on the PS3, and really, would you want your PS3 trying to cache game info over USB via the southbridge at unreliable transfer rates and latency?
If any of you all happen to be at e3 at the moment, is it possible that you can ask a sony rep about linux? I want to know if linux is confirmed to be on the HDD. if so, will i be able to hook a blu-ray burner via usb and burn through a linux vurning aplication? All these games and stuff look good for the ps3, but im 10 times more interested in the linux operating system and im very disappointed that they havent mentioned anything about it. so if anyone can ask a rep from sony about this, it would be most appreciated. I really want to know if it will operate at ten times the speed of current desktops. I really want to get rid of this clunky desktop as soon as possible

Linux doesn't necessarly means Linux as in Console/X, it's more like that Sony is building the PS3 OS based on the Linux Kernel.

great news, future faster noiseless nandflash disks also with SATA interface would in that case be an option.

I'm gonna avoid all of this by just waiting for the 60GB PS3's price to come down a little.

Yea me too. Hopefully it won't take more than 2 years for it to get to $399 though.

The big question now is will the PS3 20GB support USB Wifi adapters? There have been a lot of them coming into the market since Linksys made theirs popular for laptops. I even found an article with a Wifi adapter that's INSIDE an SD card....
I'm getting $600 PS3 for the peace of mind though. I don't want to have to get anything else other than an HDMI cable and an extra LOGITECH controller.....sorry, did I yell that? 8)

2 years sound about right traditionally Sony's first price cut goes down by $100 i have feeling when Blu-ray becomes standard (and it will  ) it will release the pressure valve quite considerably.
if all goes to plan for Sony we could see the first price drop of $150.
so wait does that mean we can use flash USB drives(like 1GB ones) and use them to save our games via USB connectors on the PS3?!?!??!?

not sure if it can be used for save games etc, but if you cannot connect your PS3 to the internet and a PS3 update comes out then you download it from a PC or laptop with net connection to a USB harddrive connect it to the PS3 and update it through the external storage device.

Closed. This thread is over 2 years old, and I'm going to assume he either knows the answer by now or no longer cares.
