View Full Version : I know my connection isnt the culprit, is it?

I've noticed that during COD:WaW, when I'm viewing the screen right before an online match, (where it shows the teams divided into groups), my connection isnt all that great...and it should be.
I have a 6meg dsl and usually have a great connection during warhawk. I dont have much lag ( i dont guess ) but noticed I only get 3 or so bars, sometimes dropping down to 2 or even 1 now and then. What would cause this? I only use my connection for PS3, and usually my desktop is on, but may not be doing anything. I'm connected wirelessly from the ps3, and hardwired from the desktop to my router. My connection should be great seeing as how I live nextdoor to the bellsouth hut for my area, which is where the dslam is located.

I noticed the "speeding up slow psn downloads" thread, but I dont know if that does much for online gaming. I wouldn't think it does, but if someone can tell me for sure, i'll do that. I did try to run the privoxy program, and it worked great on my PC/Desktop, but my laptop wouldnt connect, and when I input the info into my PS3, it wouldnt establish an internet connection..so it refused it. I need to edit the config file i'm sure, but I just set it back to no proxy and used it strait into my router, instead of using my pc as a proxy to my router..

If I am lagging any as a result of this, I cannot tell it, but I would not know if I'm lagged or not - I dont believe. I think I should have a better connection, and if someone knows how to improve that, let me know..
I can move my modem closer to the ps3 and have a wire from the ps3 to modem...then use wireless from my desktop to router..since I have a PCI wireless card in that desktop that I'm not using. What would be the benefit of this? I'm sure that it would not make such a big difference....but if someone thinks it will let me know.

The host's connection would have an effect. 3 bars isnt that bad. As long as your not lagging all the time it should be ok.

If the host has a bad upload speed, then no matter you connection, your most likely going to get a high ping, which = horrible lag.

I figured as much. I know in warhawk you can specify to show only Official Warhawk servers...is there a way to show only official COD servers..i know you dont have ranked/unranked like warhawk does, but I think there are official sony/manufacturer servers you can get onto..or is it just kinda up to chance what you get on when you search for a game?

I dont see anywhere in the settings for COD to specify a filter to show only games with a decent host..if there arent official servers, is there a way to show only people with decent pings / hosts.

Cod4 messes yp sometimes even when i have all bars, it could be the host like someone else said that has 3 or less bars. once i was playing i had all bars and everyone else had 1. but, ever since that psn went down for maintence, cod4 has been ok but soimetimes messes up .; i can play any game i want to on my dsl. it's usually the hosts fault if they don't have good connection. 3 or even 4 bars is really good. the least i've ever had was 2.

90% of the time it has nothing to do with you having a bad connection its the host who has a bad connection. I have been on games (COD4 and COD:WAW) when I have the red bar (very very low) and other games when I have 3 to 4 bars. When I host a match I have 4 bars (obviously) other people in the room have a very good connection so there isn't lag at all.

Anyone with an answer to the above?

There arent any settings to break down the games available. What you see is what you get. There are no official servers such as Warhawk so if you are in a game with horrible lag, just leave.
