I feel a shamed that the Sports section does not have a stickied MLB Thread, I'll be asking the Mod to sticky this in hope that all of out MLB trash talk and chit chat can be flourished in here. Answering all those troubling questions that keep up awake at night. Will the Yankees make something out of their ridiculous salary? Can the Cubs make it 'their' year?

With Sheffields bat they will find a place for him. He still looks to be in good shape so I'm sure he will be fine in LF or RF.

Here is the story

That's insanely sad!! His dad flew out last night to watch him pitch, too. I saw the segement on ESPN and when they read the family's statement I got a little choked up. What made sad is you can hear Buck Showalter sobbing through is mic while it was been read. Sad....Oh so sad. Just 22yrs old and was on his way to become an elite pithcher in the majors.
On a brighter note. The 'stros are doing ok looks like Big Puma, Pence, Pudge, Matsui are starting off on the right track. That and rest of the team is doing good too. Are lackin is pitching not the greatest at the moment.
Saddened by Adenhart's tragic death, he played a great game last night too. :( Hopefully the Angels will be able to bounce back and produce a great season despite it all.

Yeah exactly, this goes for everyone, and every team: Its Just the beginning of teh
season!!!!! JEEEEZZZ!! Everybody knows you can't judge a team based on
the 1st month, let alone opening week!!! Remember last year in 08 when the
Diamond Backs had the best record in baseball 1 month into the season?
Well look at what happened, they didn't even make it to the playoffs. I think
everyone needs to chillax a bit and not make such harsh Judgments towards

I would love for someone to find me a person out there who honestly believed that Blue Jays would be leading in runs scored after the first 5 games of the season and tied for homeruns.
Of course this probably won't last but damn, I thought they would have started 1 - 4 not the other way around.
Really hope the Tigers can get some runs in and sweep the Rangers in this series :o

The Astros are the quite opposite they start off like crap then on the 2nd half of the season they begin to push it. They been known to do that the last couple of seasons but I think that's stupid. If they play on a consistent level then you wont have make a push for it at the end.

Saying that Ortiz needs a right hand man since Manny is gone and Jason Bay isn't always 'there'.
I like Cabrera. I hope nothing comes of this trade. Tigers are doing alright so far, a heck of a lot better than this time last year.
I was out and about majority of the day so I didn't get a chance to watch the Cleveland/New York game but after watching the highlights:
Hey Yankees, good job on setting new records for your newly built stadium-next time try setting some for the good of your team. :p

Tigers got an impressive series win against the Mariners today. Their starting pitching has really improved over last year's, and the bats have been heating up. I have a lot of high hopes for the team this year, I think this could be a year of redemption.

Is it that time again. Marlins rebuilding is finished and now they will win the pennant. After that they will break it down again. If Florida wins this year, I will say they are the greatest organization ever!

It is their year if you go by the numbers. They won in 1997 then dismantled completely. 6 years later in 2003 they won again then dismantled totally again. Now its 6 years later and who knows what will happen....

The signifigance if a team will win the division or clinch the wild card doesn't come to almost after the all-star break or nearing the end. That's why is so important to start off in a consistant level. I hate losing more than I love winning and it ticks me off when the 'Stros are winning 4-0 in the middle innings then lose the game 9-4. It's nothing new. Just another statistic for MLB Records. I like Manny and the Dodgers so it's disappointing that this has happened, and I'm sure Mannywood is hurting especially going 1-3 since his disappearance. Hopefully Dodgers can rebound from this and continue on.
I don't think this is going to affect the Dodgers any. When Manny comes back everyone will love him again and the Dodgers really don't have any competition in the division.
Winning solves everything. The way I see, everyone is using it(was?)..so what is the difference. Remember he, A-Rod, Bonds, Clemens, and so on aren't the only ones. There are still plenty of names that haven't been revealed.

Thanks, had fun at the ball game yesterday. We sat in the 3rd level right above 1st base and right field, great view. Cant beat the catering and beverages and the comfy seats, the seats are worth $150 each not something I would normally spend. We ended up losing 4-2 but might go again this Thursday if my buddy can score some free tickets again. I didnt realize how bigger and taller Hunter Pence looks in person sure was surprised.

Not a bad pick up by the White Sox. He seems to be just having an off year this year.
Eh, this thread pretty much died, but the wild card is starting to pick up in both league. It looks like that the Red Sox will be making it to the playoffs unless they collapse. (Mets 07, 08) I am pulling for the Giants to win the Wild Card.
I find it funny that a Yankee fan of all would be taking about another team using steroids.A yankee fan of all? Wow, your making it seem like the whole team was on juice.
Edit: On the steroid note. People need to move on. It was past, and nothing is ever going to change. Players back then needed a edge, and didn't want there job being replaced so they switched to steroids. I think the offence in testing positive on performance enhancing drugs is a tad bit light. I honestly think the first offence should be one year with no pay, and then lifetime ban. Even thought there are still drugs that aren't shown in the test.

Mets for Sale?
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The owners of the New York Mets will be forced to sell the pro baseball team due to huge losses suffered in the Bernard Madoff (http://www.reuters.com/news/globalcoverage/madoff) swindle, the author of a book about the disgraced money manager said on Friday.
The Wilpon family, led by Mets owner Fred Wilpon, lost about $700 million because of Madoff, according to Erin Arvedlund, author of "Too Good to Be True," published earlier this month.

He is only 35. I think it's possible for him to play until 40 maybe till 42. Posada & Matsui will be retired by then. So I can see him taking the DH spot. A interesting fact comparing Pete Rose and Derek Jeter at the age of 35. Jeter has 80 more hits than Rose does.

YES! The Tigers just have to beat the Twins tomorrow and we'll win the Central. Although we'd have to face the dreaded Yankees:( Series still have to be played though. And baseball isn't as predictable as other sports (ie Cardinals winning it all in 05, against my Tigers:mad:). Still, I'm not a deluded fan, I know it would be tough to beat the Yankees. But we have been showing a lot of moxie this month (despite the six game skid) with the Twins breathing down our necks and playing lights out baseball for the month. There's always hope I guess.

I agree there. Hopefully the Phils can stretch it out to a 7th game. Man, Utley is on fire at moment I was shocked when he hit 2 homers again. Howard needs to wake up to give the Phils offense more pep. Even 8 runs was barely enough to beat the Yanks tells you that you cant never relax against the Yanks even with a comfortalbe lead. I like Pedro and I hope he comes through in game 6. If I was Charlie I start Hamels if it goes to game 7 but I soon as I see'em give up a few runs time for a change. The Tigers are starting out the season on the right foot. We're currently at the top of the division with the Twins. It's always good to start out good, but it's a long season. The latter part of this month is actually going to be a bit tough on us as we have a long road trip and series up against some tough teams. Hopefully we can come out of this month on the winning side of some series. But yeah, we're playing good ball thus far.

Absolutely HORRID Astros!!! ...There's talk that we might be on the way to one of the worst season records in a long while. Man, I hope that does not happend but I wont be surprised Houston teams always have a curse upon us. Still a very very young season I now once we win the our first game it'll be steady consistency wins from there.
well you got your first win today, i hope they start winning, i hate seeing teams playing bad, unless you're in Boston lol. but at least the season is still very young

At least you cats got something to look forward to. I gotta sit here and watch the Baltimore Orioles piss away games, and on top of that... choke like a hooker on Baltimore street when it comes to scoring with runners in position. Outside of Brian Matusz, there is no reason to watch the Orioles. And why they piss him away like they did Moose.
Cubs are starting the season so-so. Their starting pitching hasn't been too bad (not great, either) but their bullpen has been blowing some games (except for Marmol...so far). Their offense has been just OK, most of it coming by way of HRs.
Zambrano hasn't really settled in, either. Hopefully Lilly can get back and have a good year.

I pretty much watch them for Matusz, Jones and Wieters. Other then that there is no other reason to watch. With the Astros winning last night we are tied with the worst record in the league.

All right, check a W in for the 'stros!!! Good'ol Bud Norris he's a star in the making. You cant always get Pujols to chase and Bud made'em look silly on those 2 k's against'em. Now the obstacle will remain to keep on getting in the W column. Let's see how we do against the Cubs today.
Cubs got em today. I'll be watching again tomorrow.

a bit late, but RIP Bob Sheppard and of course the boss
Looks like the Phillies are out of their slump :). Four straight wins they're going to catch the braves and retake the division. You read it here first.

Kind of sad that no one really talked about A-Rod and his 600 home runs.

condolences to you twinkies man, but that was crazy Roy Halladay pitched the second greatest post season game of all time
woo the yankees played an excellent game tonight. good pitching in their end until the 8th but hey one run isn't to bad and mariano came in and ended it quick. rangers shouldn't be that big of a threat if they beat the rays so here's to looking at another world series for the yanks.
Glad my Giants won there division, been a few years since the did that. I think they might have a good chance of beating the Braves, but don't think they will make it any further. Still have my fingers and toes cross anyways.
Now that the Rays have battled back against the Rangers I think they'll win their series. In the World Series I either want to see the Yanks vs. the Phillies or the Rays vs. the Phillies.

Yankee's all the Way
Any Red Sox fans?
Nope. Phillies all the way. Though I've always had a respect for the Red Sox since we were pretty much in the same boat. I now do even moreso with the Liverpool developments.

Would like to see Texas win the whole thing. I just don't want the final games to be Yankees vs. Giants, as I despise both of those teams.

last night was one of the most gut wrenching losses ive ever seen....Rangers had that game won and they let them off the hook.

The Texas Rangers have defeated the New York Yankees 7-2 for there first home playoff win in team history. Series tied 1-1 should be 2-0 RNGERS.
They have outplayred the Yanlees in both of those game. Cliff Lee pitching Monday Night and we should walk away with a victory.
Here's to hoping. Being a Jays fan I want the Yankees to lose.. horribly.
Yankees got outplayed even worse then they did in the first 2 games. Cliff Lee was $$$, he held the Yankees to 1 hit. 8-0 F.
Rangers are going to take this series.

LoL, someone's confused.
On First Take they were talking about how the Monday Night Football game actually had higher ratings than the Rangers/Yankees playoff game. It doesn't surprise me that much I guess, considering I was watching the football game as well. But, it was the Titans and Jaguars...not exactly big markets. I guess it just goes to show that baseball is losing some fan base and football is a strong #1.

Heard about this as well. Can't say I'm surprised either, the baseball season is just entirely to long. I get disinterested in baseball around the all-star break, maybe that has something to do with being an Orioles fan.

Its sad, really. Baseball is by far the better sport. I have to assume its because its America and apparently we just like to see people get pounded. I've never been a big football guy, and I was recently surprised to find out a season consists of only 16 games. I don't even see a point in watching football with that being the case.
It's because Football is such a physical sport, they can't have long seasons. In terms of the playoffs, I'm a bit disappointed. The World Series won't be that interesting this year if its the Giants and Rangers. I wanted to see a rematch of last year's series.

I think its exciting that the Rangers have come as far as they have. Winning the Rays series made their first playoff series win ever! I would love for them to win if they beat the Yankees.
