I was thinking of getting an iPod touch, but I think a PSP is cheaper and can play games. And I've been wanting to play Valkryie Profiles: Lenneth so badly, lol.

So I just want to ask a three questions before I buy it.

1: On this forum(a sticky on the top) there is a thread about playing your ps1 games with the memory stick. Can you still do that with the psp 3000 version?

2: How is the sound quility on the psp?

3: Which version would you get PSP 1000, 2000, or 3000?

1: It actually depends, as of right now only the PSP 1000 and 2000 are capable of playing most PSX games from the Memstick through custom firmware which is another topic all together.
There are, however, some PSX games available for $download$ on the playstation store that will run on any PSP version.

2: being a audio guy and not getting into any detail at all. The sound quality through headphones can be better on the ipod touch. This really depends on the format in which your music is stored. If you are playing a Mp3 on touch and PSP through headphones, you will not notice any difference. But Apple has some audio formats that do sound better to the very trained ear.
As far as without headphones, the PSP has the better speakers though they are not capable of much bass and tend to crackle in the mid-range.

3: I would without a doubt get the PSP 2000 unless you don't care about custom firmware, in which case I would hold off until Sony officially announces and releases their new psp.

Hope this helps

So you really think the psp2 is going to come out really soon or within this year?

Although you could be right about the PSP2 launching before christmas until then its just a rumor, until its confirmed 100% by Sony that's all it is a RUMOR. I have the fat PSP I honestly don't use it that much unless im going somewhere and have some time to kill. The PSP does have a great verity of games though its your choice. The PSP can do alot more than the iPod touch but the only problem is the battery life isn't that great the iPod touch battery life is awesome I own a 32GB model.

1. on the PSP thread they are talking about CFW stuff.
However SONY is looking at expanding their PS1 archive on PSN.
Which any PSP can download and play on their Memory Stick.

2. After a fair bit of hunt around myself looking for a portable listening device.
I would say PSP is a good deal, for $100 you can't get any mp3 player that do anything in par.
Yes, classic, touch, cowon D2, or walkmen A can do better, but they are hips more expensive.
Also PSP do play back AAC, and you can make good quality AAC file from your PS3.

3. If you are not interested in CFW wait and see what is in SONY's hat.
Rumor is PSP4k is going to be a better portable device then PSP3k.

Not if you use touch to play games it last less then few hours, iphone is even worser.
I played ipod touch from fully charge it was only 3 hours before low battery.
But for music only my PSP last...

There's no valid evidence that there's a "psp2" at all. it's all mostly hearsay and conjecture without a shred of concrete proof.

PSP1 games can be downloaded from the playstation store either by wifi or on the PS3, other methods require custom firmware to play illegal ROMs. Some love it some find it difficult to install, but either way the process is dangerous and risks damaging your system if done incorrectly so beware.

Sound quality is just fine, MP3s sound great and games have different levels of sound quality of course but that's to be expected when you have numerous developers making titles.

The 2000 is probably the one with the best screen from reports, all around although the 3000 has the brightest screen it suffers from scanline issues which some consider less favorable a situation, the machine does how ever have a built in mic and the abilty to use video out for games to TVs with standard RCA jacks rather than just Component cables for the 2000. (either cable must be specially purchased)

Hope this answers your questions.

Everybody is pretty much giving the OP good info here.

Personally, I looked in to the whole custom firmware scene and simply decided it sounded like more work than fun, bricking PSPs and all... The OP never mentions CFW but we don't knnow if that is due to lack of interest or because he's just unaware. My comments that follow don't mention advantages/disadvantages of CFW cuz I don't know enough about it to give good data.

However, I'll just chime in and say that there seems to be a fair amount of consensus that the following is true:

The PSP1000 "feels the most solid" but is heavier and "fatter" and does not support TV-Out.

The PSP2000 "feels a little cheaper" due to reduced weight and changes to the UMD door but has support for TV-Out (you have to buy the cable seperately though)

There seems to be mixed feelings about the UMD door. At first, I really preferred the action of the UMD door on the PSP1000 but I realize a lot of people had experiences where it broke or got bound up because the mechanism is made from pretty thin metal and is kind of easy to mess up if you have gorilla hands.

Personally, I bought the PSP2000 cuz I was dying to get TV-out abilities for playing at home. Plus, buying the PSP2K gave me a cool excuse to send my PSP1K out to my brother as a gift.

I considered going for the PSP3K until I saw the screenshots showing the interlacing issues. I've still never seen one yet with my own two eyes, so maybe the problem is overblown... I just don't know.

Now, with the fact that there "MIGHT" be a PSP2 on the way for holiday season, I most definitely will not spring for a PSP3K any time soon.

If I was in the OP's shoes and wanted a PSP "now", I think I would hunt for a good deal on a PSP2 (unless that unit is somehow less ideal for CFW and I was into CFW, in which case I imagine the PSP1K is probably the "best" for CFW... but again I can not be sure of that since my CFW experience is zero).

I'd say get the PSP 3000, and just live with the actual commercial games. A couple of reasons:

1. I never found the hassle of setting stuff up very rewarding.
2. PSP game sales have been pretty weak, so a lot of devs are doing poorly. They could use your support.

Yeah, I decided I'll just get it. Sony just said that this is supposed to be their best year for software so I guess they are going to give it some more time. If it comes out this holiday, I'll be pissed, but I've wasted more on less.

So you can download games off Psn, but can you play your old ps1 games using the memory stick? There is a sticky here for that reason, but that was for the psp 1000.

Valkryie Profiles: Lenneth is aleady on PSP, you can find it cheap and not worry about the PS1 disc. PS1 games off the PSN will work on your PSP. If you cannot rip PS1 games on a 3k model today you will be able too sometime in the future.

Sound quality would be rated higher than most ipods, which doesn't really say much. The functionality of the machine is quite good too. With the PSP remote you can swap tracks, up and down the volume and pause songs with ease while your PSP is on hold with the screen off inside your pocket or backpack. Battery time of the machine just playing music is about 30hours.

Get the 3k model, you can play games, photos and movies on your TV

what is the size of the psp 3000 and 2000 memory?

are you able to transfer backup movies from ps3 hard drive to the psp?

if this is so... i may very well think of picking one up too.

Just wait a month and a half to see what sony does at e3.

Thats a good idea. I bought my PSP 1k a year ago from my friend.

the PSP is so dam awesome.

It has a good game library now, and a lot of the games are really cheap now.

Internal memory is nothing, it's only got Memory Stick Pro Duo II. Only SONY or Scan Disc make cards for this machine, so not too much option.

In the latest update PSN videos will now work on your PSP.

Not true at all.

Ive bought a mSDHC to ProDuo adapter. This enables a micro SDHC card to be plugged into a ProDuo slot. Works with the PSP like a charm.

Adapter costs £4.99 and a micro SDHC 16GB cost £38.94 for a total of £43.93.

A Standard ProDuo 16Gb costs £52.99. All from Amazon.co.uk.

Saves almost £10. Not much, but mSDHC cards are cheaper then ProDuo by a considerable margin.

The PSP has been notorious for it's weird movie set up. For the most part it seems like only MP4s will work and even then it has to be some specific combination and naming system before it'll recognize it. There are plenty of free converters to make your movies compatible, it's just a matter of finding one that fit your needs and does all you want while working efficiently for what ever computer you're using because the PS3 doesnt auto convert unfortunately (probably piracy fears.)

there have been NO, I repeat NO PICS of a "psp2", they were fan made renders that were made to show their own ideas for a new PSP, there is nothing official about them.

NO not a word from SCE or SONY.
It all started on a rumor about no more UMD.
Which I really doubted SCE will give up UMD in such a short notice.
I meant SONY hold on to MD for over 5 years to make it popular in asia.
They can sure do the same with UMD.

Frankly a number of Japanese publisher are started printing
new wave of UMD videos.
Priced at 2/3 of DVD, with PSP3k able to display it on HDTV
with 2x up-scale to 480p,
up-sacling with good even number result in very good quality.
Not a bad deal if you ask me, similar to DVD quality at sub DVD price.
