View Full Version : Book Nerds: What are you currently reading?
Anyone else here read a lot of books? Thought it would be nice to discuss the books we are reading. Maybe get some good recommendations as well. I'm mostly a fantasy nerd :D
Just finished Robert Jordan's(RIP) Wheel of Time series and Geroge Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Both excellent reads IMO.
Few days ago I started the Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind and finished Wizards First Rule. Probably the best start to a Fantasy series I have ever read. I literally could not put it down, went through 800+ pages in 2 days.

After I finish this I will be jumping into The Warded Man and then finally get into The Black Company that I have been wanting to read for a few years now. The Warded Man just released and is getting nothing but praise so far.

Last book I read was Black House by Stephen King & Peter Straub. Stephen King has probably been the most I have read when to comes to "proper" books. Other than that, it's comic books and if this counts been reading Star Trek Countdown on the iPhone...

Right now I'm listening to The Count of Monte Cristo on my drives to and from school. Very good, very long.
Last book I actually read was Black Cross, WWII historical fiction. Also read Invitation to Valhalla which was really good, pretty amazing how it's mostly true. Would love to find other books like those two.
Doctor Who - Sick Building by Paul Magrs
I have another 9 books to read from the Doctor Who collection.
Then i'm gonna read my brother World of Warcraft books.

The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs- by Irvine Welsh just started reading this its pretty good so far
The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs - Summary
Troubled Environmental Health Officer Danny Skinner is engaged on a quest to uncover what he refers to as 'the bedroom secrets of the master chefs'. He regards the unravelling of this classified information as the key to learning genetic facts about himself and the crippling compulsions that threaten to wreck his young life. The ensuing journey takes him from Europe's festival city of Edinburgh to the foodie capital of America, San Francisco. But the hard-drinking, womanising Skinner has a strange nemesis in the form of model-railway enthusiast Brian Kibby. It is his unfathomable, obsessive hatred of Kibby that takes over everything, threatening to destroy not only Skinner and his mission but also those he loves most dearly. When Kibby contracts a horrific and debilitating mystery virus, Skinner understands that his destiny is inextricably bound to that of his hated rival, and he is faced with a terrible dilemma. The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs is a gothic parable about the great obsessions of our time: food, sex and minor celebrity, and is a brilliant examination of identity, male rivalry and the need to belong in the world.

I am currently reading "The Wolves Of Calla" [Book 5] of The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. Finished book 4 a few days back. Interesting read, that's for sure.
I am reading 'Le Morte d'Arthur'. It is the Arthurian legend about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table:
Le Morte d'Arthur: John Boorman, Sir Thomas Malory, John Matthews, Anna-Marie Ferguson: Amazon.co.uk: Books
It is not an easy book; composed in the 15th century, it uses old English, such as:
"Whoso pulleth oute this swerd of this stone and anvyld is rightwys kynge borne of all Brytaygne."
It is very good so far. :)
^ that sounds way over my head lol. i would probably give up after the first page.

Everyone has to read this series.
How good is it on a scale of 1 - 10?
I have read plenty of Kings books including most of the major ones like Salems Lot (my favourite), The Shining, Pet Semetary, The Stand and so on and ive been considering reading this series because apparently it draws on elements from his other books or something?
I'm just not sure if i can be bothered to get into reading a 5-6-7 book long series xD.

I'm 135 pages into The Gunslinger but I stopped reading it about a month ago. My attention seems to be immune to the book.
I've almost finished Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger, but it's only 138 pages. Stormed through it more or less. Bought it a couple of days ago.
The book before that was Gulliver's Travels by Jonathon Swift. That one was for university. I love the satire and the ideas the book has, but books from anything before the 1900s seem to always instill in me a sense of apathy and quiet resentment. I've always been into writing and books, so took all the English geared subjects in whatever educational institute since I had the choice. Maybe it's because everything in the subject barely ever touches on more modern works and all this classical literature was forced down my throat. I get sick of the writing style.
Or maybe it was because I had to read it. **** a deadline. I'm usually a pretty slow reader, as in. I read only a few pages every day. Not as in "theeee.... caaaaaatttt... saaat... on... the...... mat."
Whatever. Everybody enjoy your respective books.
Oh: Also, I just bought The Thing on The Doorstep & Other Weird Stories, by H.P. Lovecraft. All the guy seems to have done is short stories. Which is kind of refreshing actually.
just finished book 2 of The Sword of Truth series. went to my local book store to get the 3rd and they were all out so I had to order it from Amazon. sucks waiting when you want to continue on reading.

Last book I read was all three Hellgate London books. they were good IMo, not expert books but good.. ending was pretty bad though.
That was a couple of weeks ago. Haven't read anything since. I'm not sure what too read anyways. I like sci-fi and Fantasy books, but they need some quality to them for me to like.
Any recommendations?

just started Scar Night yesterday and almost through the 600 pages today. a great book. its pretty twisted. its like a gothic nightmare steam punk morbid fantasy, complete with morbid religion and Angels.
this is one of the best worlds i have seen created in a book. it really comes alive while you are reading it. there is this huge endless black abyss and this city of steel and iron is suspended above it by huge ancient chains. everything from the roads(more like big catwalks) and buildings/houses are all suspended over the abyss by chains.
it has some of the most imaginative battles i have read that would do well on the big screen.
this is the first Novel by the author. he actually worked on GTA before this.

I am reading this book. I've just gotten into it, but so far it's excellent!
If you like sorta silly stuff, A. Lee Martinez has done a few books now -- I think I just read #6. The first one was pretty mediocre, but still fun. The second was decent. By the third he'd really found his stride, and I think he's got a ton of potential. He reminds me a lot of early Pratchett.
Thank God for this thread. I've been meaning to start reading a new book for a few weeks, but I don't know what type. Are Stephen King's books as scary as they're known to be ? :D

Naw SK books are not that bad. I suggest reading the Dark Tower series! Other than the slow and predicable 4th book it's a great and exciting read! Books 5,6, and 7 are really good!
I'm currently reading the Resistance book, it's literary drivel but thankfully not very long.

Just finished reading Choke again, didn't enjoy it as much as the first time. About to jump into this Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy collection that has the first 4 or something...read the first one a while ago but never pursued the others. First was alright.
Was thinking about reading Angels and Demons again since the movie is about to drop, I hated the Da Vinci Code film but the book was enjoyable. I remember Angels and Demons being a better read than the Da Vinci Code anyways. Psh, movie adaptions almost always suck so I'm not sure why I'm complaining...or rambling on.

The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall. It's about a guy who wakes up and has no idea who he is. He then starts receiving letters from himself that tell him some pretty wild things, such as the existence of a predatory shark like creature that feeds on human thoughts. Very strange but cool so far.

nice to see another fan of A Song of Ice and Fire. i do have some problems with the books though(only on Clash of Kings right now). i started the series because it was talked about so much as being the best fantasy books out at the moment by so many people. but i have had a hard time reading it at times. the way it bounces around every chapter makes it hard for me to get into a "reading rhythm". i will get into a character and chapter, then all of a sudden it will switch to someone i dont know or whatever, or switch to a character i dont find interesting. but my biggest issue is that for both the books so far is that it feels like there is nothing going on for about 90% of the books.
i kind of felt that it was a little missleading calling the books a fantasy series. there is very little fantasy in it from what i have read so far. feels like its mostly just political mumbo jumbo from kings and queens and whatnot.

i know this isnt a book but i just got the Legend of the Seeker 1st season in the mail today. its based off the Sword of Truth series and im a big fan of the books. im not going into it with high expectations as i know movies/shows from books are never anywhere as good as the novels. i should enjoy it more with not having high expecatations.

I was going to recommend this to Rapture - pretty outstanding fantasy series. Probably the most modern fantasy material I've read (otherwise, most of my recommendations would be much older). I've read some other selective G.R.R Martin and generally like his work (I enjoyed the few Wildcards books I read, though I think he was principally an editor).
I'd say for more modern SciFi, check out Ender's Game (and sequels) by O.S. Card. Again, lots of "classic" stuff I would/could recommend too if you're interested.

Can anyone recommend me a good fantasy or science fiction book series? I want to get back into reading, not sure where to start.
for Fantasy, I would recommend looking up info on:
The Wheel of Time- Robert Jordan
The Sword of Truth- Terry Goodkind
^ those two series are 10+ books long so ignore them if that sort of dedication needed for books is not for you.
The Warded Man- Peter V. Brett
The Name of the Wind- Patrick Rothfuss
A Song of Ice and Fire- George Martin
The Black Company- Glenn Cook
Deepgate Codex- Allen Campbell
Boulayman is right, Fantasy is good and everything but you guys need to branch out some more.
In terms of fantasy my favorite is Darren Shan's Cirque du freak series and the demonata series. Other than that there is the eragon series by Christopher Paolini.
Personally though, I like to read fiction more:
-Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead, or Atlas Shrugged.
-George Orwell: 1984, Animal Farm.
-Alduous Huxley: Ape and Essence, Brave New World, Point Counter Point.
-Charles Bukowski: Woman, Post Office, Factotum.
-Herman Hesse: Demian, Sidharta, Narcissus and Goldmund.
Those are some of the greatest works of our time.
Boulayman is right, Fantasy is good and everything but you guys need to branch out some more.
actually, like Boulayman, its pretty lame to tell people what they should and shouldn't read. would you tell someone who plays First person shooters that they should branch out and play JRPGs? i read mostly fantasy, but its not all i read. as im sure fiction is not all you read even though that is what you may prefer.
if someone is reading fantasy books, chances are they are doing it because that's what they like to read. or maybe they have tried other types of books and just did not care for them as much.

I love The Dark Tower series. I've read through them twice now.
I finished The Last Days of Krypton yesterday and I enjoyed it very much.
It starts off kind of slow but then it picks up a quarter of the way through and never lets up. It's very fast-paced (hardly any side-tracking or downtime, just the progression of the main story) and the characters are great. The ending even made me cry.
I recommend it to anyone looking for a good science-fiction novel.
Does reading textbook count? Oh gawd... I can't wait until Wednesday and get my Final Exam over with...
The textbook itself:

It's surprisingly not that dry... Or maybe I'm just really into moral philosophy :)

Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King.
One of my favorite books of all time.
528 pages of a wonderful story written by Stephen King.
It's really an amazing book.
Even though there are some parts in the book where it is a little inappropriate for little kids. Lol. -_-;;
So do not recommend to readers under.. 14! >o<

actually, like Boulayman, its pretty lame to tell people what they should and shouldn't read. would you tell someone who plays First person shooters that they should branch out and play JRPGs? i read mostly fantasy, but its not all i read. as im sure fiction is not all you read even though that is what you may prefer.
if someone is reading fantasy books, chances are they are doing it because that's what they like to read. or maybe they have tried other types of books and just did not care for them as much.
Scape, you make an excellent point. If someone is reading fantasy books chances are that's what they like to read. But that is not what I, at least, was trying to say. I was only suggesting that people branch out, I am not going to impose what I like on you nor anyone else, so relax. I guess the reason I said that was because the discussion as a whole has been solely about fantasy books, and I would have like to see more genres discussed.
I love The Dark Tower series. I've read through them twice now.
Brilliant series. Truly amazing.

I'm about 1/2 of the way into Duma Key, and I would already have to say that it will be one of my favorite Stephen King novels.

Last three book's I have read are " The Kite Runner " by Khaled Hosseini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khaled_Hosseini)which is probably one of the most influential books i have ever read.
Then " No Country For Old Men " very good but if you have seen the movie then you have read thee book. And written by the same author is another very influential book named "The Road" must read before the movie comes out, the book is amazing.
And these are actually a three part series but I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and highly recommend them, The Golden Compass , Book one is " The Golden Compass " book two is " The Subtle Knife " book three is " The Amber Spyglass " I seriously could not put these books down, i will read them again very soon.
And to everyone who reads Stephen King (who is a decent author, i definately cut my teeth so to speak on him) should or must read some Clive Barker "Books of Blood" or "Coldheart Canyon" and ill add the short storie collection "In The Flesh" the books of blood are also short stories .
The Fountain- Darren Aronofsky
Just started it. It's one of my favorite movies and I expect the book to be much better. I believe this was done after Requiem for a Dream and when he thought The Fountain movie was going to be a no-go.

Probably won't be reading anything till the release of these titles.
Stephen King's Under the Dome
Dean Koontz's Breathless
Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol
Whichever one comes first will be the next book I read.
Was wondering when Dan Browns next book was releasing.
Will be picking that up for sure.

Was wondering when Dan Browns next book was releasing.
Will be picking that up for sure.
I think its release date is September 15, 2009.
I'm reading The Subtle Knife atm by Philip Pullman.
Finished The Wasp Factory. Great read, reccomend it for sure, it's dark and twisted and quite nuts.
About half way through Gai Jin now, which I had to put down to read a couple others.

I'm reading The Subtle Knife atm by Philip Pullman.
I read the His Dark Materials series a few months back.
I enjoyed them. :D
I'm now reading The Silmarillion from J.R.R. Tolkien.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0618126988.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
It tells of the origin and early days of Middle-Earth. It reads more like an encyclopedia than a novel, but it's definitely filled with a lot of interesting sections.
I read the first few chapters in The Silmarillion and MAN did it give me a headache. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as LotR and The Hobbit and to be honest I was unable to finish the book. It sounded to mished up.

Star Wars fan? Lol, nice list of books. I love the series but I've never read any of the books tbh.
I read the first few chapters in The Silmarillion and MAN did it give me a headache. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as LotR and The Hobbit and to be honest I was unable to finish the book. It sounded to mished up.
If you just want to pick up and read a great story, then The Silmarillion obviously isn't a good choice. Like I said, it's more like an encyclopedia than a novel. It's ridiculously fast-paced and the insane amount of names and locations can be overwhelming.
But I just try to read it at a slower pace and I'll only look up the names and locations that are vital to the story. Everything else I just pass over.
And there's certainly some parts in the book where Tolkien just describes a realm or a race of people for 5 pages or so, but I'll just skim through that. There are however, plenty of very interesting sections that make it worth reading. As a big fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, I'm very interested to hear more about things like Morgoth and the Valar.

Yeah, it is a really expansive universe. Keeps me occupied during the summer.
Basically this list:
wow.
Have you read all of that yet?
I'm big on star wars films, but never knew there was so much outside of them
I'd LOVE to read up on all that.
Personally, i'm reading Slash's Autobiography "Slash" ... AGAIN :D

No, I'm doing it chronologically, but I am also reading other books and watching a lot of movies, so I will not finish that list so fast. I don't think I'd want to, since I would be without books to read. I have however read a very large amount of books up to the events just after the 3rd movie.

Have you read The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien?
I thought it was pretty good.
Currently reading;
Empire: Reading it while playing the great XBL Arcade game Shadow Complex makes for a excellent combo! I like Cards Ender and Bean series too!

That is awesome, i had no idea that there was more too it;
especially THAT much more too it.
How much did/does it cost? i'd fancy my chances at that.

Depends. You can find some books in the library for free. Or you can find them in new or used sets. I bought many books, but used the power of the internet to give me access to the rest.
Buying every book on that list new (even used can still be a lot) will cost a pretty penny, so it is inadvisable for all but the most hardcore of the hardcore star wars fans.

I would have to agree with whoever told you that it's bizarre.
Just finished The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara. I was pleasantly surprised because I only picked it up at the book store because I thought it had really nice cover art under the sleeve and it ended up being very good. It was pretty refreshing as far as your typical fantasy goes. I has a pretty cool setting with tropical islands and airships.

I gotta say, as confused as I was in his first and second book - three and four (the one above) clear all confusion and weave a tale to rival a lot of other high fantasy out there. Going to be stuck on the Malazan series for a while I think - its just too good to put down.

For some reason I've had to read more this semester than I've had to in all of high school and college. I even had to read a book for my film class. Thus far:
James Joyce's "Dubliners"
Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep"
Thomas Cathcart's & Daniel Klein's "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar"
As well as a host of plays and poetry
Right now I'm working on Ernest Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast," which I'm really enjoying.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Great books! Just started the other day. :)
I'm re-reading those as well. I'm on The Two Towers. I started reading them again because I finally read The Silmarillion, which is the history of the first and second ages of Middle Earth. After that I read The Children of Hurin, which is an expansion of a couple of chapters from The Silmarillion into a full book. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place toward the end of the third age. What an imagination Tolkein had. Amazing. I highly recommend The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin to Tolkein fans.
What an imagination Tolkein had. Amazing.
I'm taking a "Traditions of Storytelling" class and my professor goes on and on about how Tolkien stole from all of the great, early writers. Such as the Greek tragedians, the romantic poets, and of course Shakespeare.
He keeps bringing him up for every single book we read. It's starting to get annoying since I love Tolkien. lol
I'm currently reading Survivor, by Chuck Palahniuk. I tried reading through it once before but it's so different to Fight Club and Choke that I got bored and put it down. Now I'm re-reading it and loving it. It really is a brilliant book, albeit a bit twisted.

On a bit of a generic sci-fi spree after reading academic works for the last 3 years of uni. Took me a while to get back into reading for pleasure again ;D
I'm powering through the Star Wars expanded universe novels and graphic novels.
I'm on the final book of the Darth Bane trilogy, 'Dynasty of Evil' - I actually find these books kinda hard to place under the same umbrella as Star Wars, even though it's obviously the same mythology etc. The story of this trilogy is awesome, I think I have something of a morbid fascination with the 'Sith' characters.

I'm about half way through it so far and it has been a great read. The book was not funded or sponsored by the WWE so it does have a lot of secrets and stuff that they wouldn't want you to know. I highly recommend it even if you are not a hardcore wrestling fan.
I will definitely have to purchase it now. Being a HUGE wrestling fan, I guess it will be a must read. I always loved Bret Hart and I am very enthused to see him injecting himself back in the WWE.

Book 8 of 10. Been quite a ride; if any are on the fence, take the plunge. This series delivers and is well worth the investment.

I've just finished reading Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. You see, I study English Literature, this course we're having several novels. Heart of Darkness (Hardest English language I've ever witnessed) A Passage To India (Did not read it thoroughly) and Wide Sargasso Sea is by far my favorite. I'm starting the next novel today, which is Lord of The Flies.

I just started book 4, The Shadow Rising, of The Wheel Of Time by the late Robert Jordan.
Good so far. Only downside is I've been told that the fifth book is the last real good one as it stats to really drag on due to explainigng and covering so many small subplots, etc.
Only time well tell though.
The Wheel Keeps on spinning, there is no beginning.

Just picked up Mr Nice (autobiography of Howard Marks) for the lowly price of £2.84 on Amazon Kindle and really looking forward to reading it. Anyone already done so, and did you enjoy it?
Went on a frenzy and also picked up the autobiographies of Slash and Frankie Boyle. Random, I know.
*Edit*
Just saw BBK finished Mr Nice a week ago and enjoyed it. Good stuff!

Not currently but i finished The Lost Army by Valerio Massimo Manfredi 3 days ago.
Just picked up Hitman by Bret Hart. I haven't seen it in years but one of my biggest wrestling memories from childhood is when he broke his sternum. Thoroughly looking forward to reading it.
Finished Lord of The Flies. One of the greatest British literature books.
I'm not sure about my next book, but maybe it's going to be: The Heart of The Matter by Graham Greene.

need to get back into reading at some point soon.
Anyone into the sci-fi fantasy genre might wont to look into the following.
Age of misrule trilogy by Mark Chadbourn
This trilogy along with the 2 trilogys following it that continue the story (dark age and kingdom of the serpent) is what I regard as the best series of books I have ever read.
I recomend these highly.
Thinking about it I may re-read the lot soon.

The graphic novel. Loving it so far because it has Kevin Smith writing it and Walt Flanagan drawing it. But the dialogue is hilarious in some parts and not what you would expect Bats or Joker to say lol

Finished this a few weeks ago. Very interesting, as it includes a ridiculous amount of testimonies regarding the same UFO being seen over a 15-year period. There were over 7,000 eye-witnesses. Even the biggest skeptics still haven't explained the Hudson Valley UFO.

And now I'm reading this. I'm about halfway through. It's a very fast-paced apocalypse thriller which incorporates real conspiracies and dangers into a fictional story.
I'm reading Ice Man (Chuck Liddel's auto bio) and The Big Questions - Physics.

Finished Cacophony. Awesome stuff. Really deep in part 3 when Batman and The Joker have a meaningful discussion, which brings me to read this one:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff318/isisblack123/412px-Joker_graphic_novel_Cover.jpg
Apparently the bio of the Joker and why he does what he does even though he kinda says so in the aforementioned novel I just finished. Now I know why Batman won't kill him either. He wants to live by some righteous code, just like Superman, and this is why they keep dealing them everytime.

I'm not exactly a book nerd, but I'm reading "The Harsh Cry of the Heron" by Lian Hearn.
It is the last book out of four books. I have read the first three books from the library but now I want to complete the set, because I also have the pre-quel book for all four books.
I had it for almost a year now!!

I tried reading The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking after I finished Night Siege, and while I lasted about 70 pages, it just became far too technical, and I'm not interested enough in science to enjoy that.
Although I'm sure Rapture would like it!

This book is a great read, blends scifi and mystery. This author does a great job of working scientific theories into his novels, with out becoming too serious. His last one had to to do with CERN, The God Particle and the reaction to such discovery.
