It's very well known that Nitendo has a ton of money, something like 6-7 billion just lying around, and they're very profitable.

HA!
Right, like Ninty are going to miss an opportunity to let fanatics hand over another wad of money to play Legend Of Zelda.

I suspect they shouldn't be grossly expensive though.

True. I am very excited about the specs, and how they are going to pull this off! They said it would be cheap, but at the same time Miyamoto said we would all go WOW when we see the graphics (As I have mentioned many places in this forum:P)...

Actually, it was Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata who said that. "When you turn on Revolution and see the graphics, you will say,"Wow!". And the report that the Revolution would be only 2-3 times more powerful was reported by USA Today. "By Nintendo's own admission, according to a report from USA Today, the system is two to three times as powerful as its current-generation console, the GameCube." I have yet to see another article where Nintendo denies this. If you have one, post a link here.

I doubt Nintendo's system will be the most powerful system. The amount of thermal load it produced and the heat dissipation it would require would melt that little system. 2-3 times more powerful may be a bit modest, but probably more realistic than Sony's and Nvidia's claims.

edit:After doing some research, there are a few "insiders" who claim that Nintendo will offer a lot more power than we are expecting. Now this would not be the first time that Nintendo pulled something like this. They are always low-key about their hardware. It would not surprise me if the Revolution was actually 20-30 times more powerful than the GCN. You have to remember that the GCN is quite a bit more powerful the the PS2 when it was released a year later. Most analysts believe that the Revolution will not launch until November 2006. This could be 6 months or more after the PS3 will be released. It could be that all three will take a loss on selling the hardware, just to get it into people's homes. MS lost around $104 when selling the first XBOX at its launch (approx. $404 manufacturing costs). If Revolution is indeed that powerful, I wonder what kind of cooling they are going to implement, a couple of Delta fans, liquid cooling? It could even use liquid metal cooling system, which is 65 times more thermally conductive than water and is already being used on ATI's X850 XT.

edit: I found this article on IGN:

Q: Is Revolution "two-to-three times more powerful than GameCube"?

A: USA Today reported this news based on a comment from Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan. The information was later determined to be false. We do not yet know how much more power Revolution wields over its predecessor.

I THINK that Nintendo said that the revolution's online service was free and would be shipped WiFi ready.... I doubt it will be the most powerful, but it has the chance of being the most popular. Nintendo Revolution (if it has free online services) will get people to buy it just because of that, because people think everything should be free. Nintendo will have some of the best games one for example Metroid Prime 3 is going to be awesome. I am almost certain it will be the cheapest and Most parents would buy it for their children because of the price, also because they assume that nintendo has more childish games. So their are a few reasons why I would assume it will be the most popular. I am buying one just for Metroid Prime, its one of my Favorite games. Also I have played and beaten pretty much every mario game so yeah. I love that plumber hes the best :)

Who knows, they may decide to increase the power of the console if they find out some way to, while also not losing money from doing that, its a long time till Revolution comes out, they can change anything when they want, they dont have a fully working or designed system yet, or controller.

Im hoping that Revolution will do well, im sure it will, because i dont want anything bad to happen to Nintendo, Nintendo are great, they are in it solely for the games, they always seem to create new an innovating games, like Nintendogs, well, its not so innovative, because its basically like a bigger scaled up version of a tamgotchi, but thats why its so good, and its fun, also because it has wifi functions.

Is that black box the revolution?
Yes, It is a prototype, I will change before the relase of the system.

Is Revolution the final name?
No, Revolution is the codename for the console, we don't know it's real name yet.

Will the revolution have online capabilities?
Yes, Nintendo Revolution have online built-on.

Why do the revolution is only three times more powerful than the Gamecube?
We don't know the specs of the system, so we dont really know how much power the revolution has.

Why nintendo has not showed anything important about the revolution?
It is possible that nintendo is planing to do a Spaceworld to show Revolution, in the last spaceworld they revealed Gamecube.

Wich games will the Revolution have?

Some coonfirmed games are:

Super Smash Bros 3.
Metroid Prime 3.
Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles.

Will the online capabilities and downloading features be expensive?

We don't really know, Online is supposedly to be free, Downloable games are going to cost some cash.

1.Intro
Nintendo Revolution is the code name for Nintendo's fifth video game console and the successor to the Nintendo GameCube. The system was unveiled at Nintendo's 2005 E3 press conference and will be released to consumers in 2006 or late 2005.

The Nintendo Revolution is backward compatible with Nintendo GameCube games through a dual-format front-loading disc drive. Additionally, Revolution will have the ability to play Nintendo 64, SNES/Super Famicom, and Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom games: they are recompiled/ported software and will be acquired via the Nintendo Online download service. An "internal upgrade" was announced during the E3 2005 press conference which will allow DVD-video playback.

Nintendo has stated that it wishes for its new console to provide more than simply better graphics over its predecessor. It is still not yet known how they will achieve this, but it is speculated that it may provide new methods of interaction.

2. Hardware

Nintendo has announced that IBM has been working with the development of the CPU, codenamed "Broadway".
IBM was previously involved with the development of the processor in Nintendo's current system, GameCube. Nintendo has also announced that Canadian graphics card maker ATI Technologies is involved with the GPU codenamed "Hollywood". Before the GameCube's release, ATI had bought ArtX, the company responsible for the GameCube's GPU and whose members were made of former Silicon Graphics employees involved with the Nintendo 64.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also announced that the Revolution will be backward compatible with GameCube games and have built-in Wi-Fi for online playing, provided by Broadcom Corporation (http://cube.ign.com/articles/595/595089p1.html). MoSYS, whose 1T-SRAM memory technology was used in the GameCube, will again provide the same technology for Revolution.

Nintendo has announced that Revolution will use standard DVD as its media, and the Nihon Keizai has added onto this specification by stating that the system will employ 12 cm optical discs. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/japan_nintendo_dc). It will also have the ability to play DVD movies with an "internal add-on".

3.Known Specs

* Processors
o PPC CPU "Broadway"
o ATI GPU "Hollywood"
* Ports and peripherals
o Two USB 2.0 ports
o Wireless controllers
o No serial ports announced (All Nintendo consoles to date have expansion serial ports).
* Media
o 512 MB of flash memory
o Slot loading DVD drive capable of handling both 12 cm and 8 cm DVDs (for GameCube compatibility).
o A bay for a SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory.
* Networking
o Wi-Fi by the Broadcom Corporation
* Backward compatibility
o Four controller ports for GameCube controllers
o Two memory card slots for GameCube games
o DVD drive loads GCN DVDs
o Downloadable NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 games

Wireless and Network Issues by: t 002 Tyrant

a) A LAN (Local Area Network) is not a WAN (Wide Area Network).
-If you don't know what this means; a LAN is your internal network. In simple terms, it consists of all the devices hooked up within your house (Technically a router is meant to create seperate LANs, but we're not going to concentrate on that here). A WAN is, again in simplest terms, a connection of multiple LANs. Or, in the case of most home users, simply the actual connection to the internet (eg: to the cable modem).
-What this amounts to is, the WAN connection is all that matters as far as whatever you are connecting to is concerned. How you are connected in the LAN doesn't matter and isn't seen to the server your signal goes to over the internet.
-Breaking it down further, this means that having a wireless or wired network HAS NOTHING TO DO with your internet connection. So if you have a wireless LAN, or a wireless device, you don't have automatic access to the internet. You require a WAN connection for that. In most cases (as it relates to home users), a broadband connection or a dial-up connection serves as the WAN connection
-Putting it together: Using a wireless router or a simple access point, you can set up a wireless LAN (Using a wireless access point without routing functionality, you will have to run this device THROUGH a router for the following to work). By connecting a broadband connection to the WAN port of the router, you allow the LAN devices access to the internet. It works as a "middle-man" and routes information to and from the devices and the server they are communicating with. Using a wired network works the same way, except rather than communicating using a wireless signal, the LAN devices are connected via cables.

The bottom line here is: Wireless and wired networks in and of themselves have NOTHING to do with your internet connection. Having a router or having a wireless device doesn't mean you have an internet connection and vice-versa. Also, as far as anyone you're connecting to online is concerned whether you use a wireless or wired LAN is completely irelevant; The connection to the WAN port is all that really matters as far as internet traffic goes.

b)Revolution has built-in wifi.
-All we know about Revolution's network connections thusfar is that it has a built-in wireless NIC. This means it can connect to a wireless LAN or (in certain cases) other wireless devices (eg: DS). As I've stated before, this does NOT mean you instantly have an internet connection; it merely means that using a WAP/wireless router and a broadband connection, you can connect through the router to the internet; just without connecting an ethernet cable to the system. You however HAVE TO HAVE both a WAP/wireless router and a broadband connection to get online with the Revolution (technically you can do a workaround to use 56k, and I'll explain this further if anone asks, but its not recommended since you'll still have 56k speeds).

c) Relating to 2, there is currently no Ethernet port on the Revolution
-this means you cannot have a wired connection and will HAVE to have a wireless LAN set up to get online
d) The type of connection on the system has NOTHING TO DO with a subscription fee
-I have no idea where this one came from, but I've seen people say that they don't want the system to have an ethernet port so that they won't have to pay a subscription fee. Again, this can be traced back to #1; You're LAN setup doesn't even have ANYTHING to do with who you are connecting to. Thus, using wireless and using wired LANs have NO bearing on them; once it passes the WAN connection, the signal is the same no matter what the LAN structure it came from is (for our purposes at least. There are some things like NAT information that can be in the data at that point, but that has nothing to do with wireless vs. wired and is 99.999999% of the time, irelevant).
-Speaking on the subscription fee to XBOX Live again; that is merely their decision. The fee is for use of their servers, not because there is an ethernet port

Perhaps if they gave all the old games a very modest price like what you pay for MP3s from iTunes or something... That would go over well. You have to consider that a lot of people consider NES Roms as abandonware.

Anyways, as far as the power of the Rev? It's really hard to say.. When you think about the fact that current graphics cards are already capable of HD then it really makes you wonder... What kind of graphics can be squeezed out of these graphics cards at 480i? If you keep up with PC gaming at all then you will know that since the Xboxes release, PC cards have leaped in technology significantly. Without the shape filling loads of high definition, perhaps these cards could run HUGE environments that the PS3 and 360 won't be able to. We still don't know what kind of RAM the Rev will be using either. It is entirely possible that Nintendo will rock on the RAM, which is a substantial part of the gaming experience.

It seems fairly obvious to me that Nintendo is holding out until both MS and Sony have finalized products. If they let out their information too soon then they will simply get copied. They have been the first company to introduce so many innovations. There are a lot of things we consider commonplace that were pioneered by the "Big N"... Would you want to give MS and Sony the chance to run to the drawing boards to steal your thunder if you were them?
