View Full Version : First PSP go Review from The Gadget Show
http://www.n4g.com/psp/News-363842.aspx
Haven't watched it yet, will update after I have.
Yea iphone has nothing on PSP, k.
Looks like it is going to be a little cramped for space. I guess I'll have to actually hold one before I decide whether I'll get one or not.

Have to agree with the post above me, it just looks too small and cramped, and what he said about his thumb aching, mine gets like that on the 2000 so i tend to use the dpad most of the time.
Ill hae to hold one too and play with one to completely make up my mind but as of yet im not excited about it at all.

Even the Gadget show think the price for the PSP go is too high..
Sony need to listen, Or the PSP go could be a HUGE failure.

Definitely looks the part but I can't bring myself to spend that much wedge on a system I already own in one form. Maybe it will entice new owners.

I use my psp mainly for media type stuff...when I do play on it, its not for long so the thumb thing doesnt worry me.
Well again it has been confirmed it looks the part. I never knew the PlayStation store was so smooth and modern on the PSP; looks great. I have to agree with the reviewer that this is more a strategic move from Sony; something I have been talking about at length in these forums. Every owner of the PSP Go will be a PlayStation Network account holder simple as so watch the service grow massively.
Going against the iTouch will be tough; the reviewer is right when talking about the fact that people do not want two devices. In Japan they may get away with it; the iTouch is not that popular but they have to be careful in Western markets. They need to show clearly that the PSP is the better game platform not only for hardcore games but casual games as well...not an easy task as the iTouch has the App Store, the marketing and the hype behind it. Also the iTouch does music, photos better and has that wonderful Touch OS...and looks like it will be a little cheaper!
If the PSP Go is going to be a success, it needs to be priced at 149.99 GBP simple as; they would get many DSi owners and it would be a cheaper better games alternative to the iTouch; but at 220-250 GBP they will have a limited market. Also I must say they have got the PSP Go quite early!

Yeah, The Gadget Show also got the PSP 3000 and the PAL PS3 a couple of months before they launched.

I did not know the Gadget Show was that popular, just seemed one of those shows on Channel 5. Back to the GO; it is worrying if every reviewer will compare it against the iTouch. IMO; should have shown GT PSP running and LittleBigPlanet as well as highlighting those Remote Play features. But on the whole not bad. If it was priced at 149.99 GBP I am pretty sure it would be a good seller, maybe they will introduce a 8GB version...
Yeah, I think Sony are going to have to drop the price sooner or later, hopefully around E3 next year.

good review, makes valid points. I think the major issue will be the price point, as i dont think it justifies it with the hardware provided.

The price for the PSP Go is scaring me a bit to be honest. I'm enticed by the idea of a fully digital game collection always there for when you want it, but at the same time, not sure if its worth $250. I also have an iPod Touch, but that is pretty much strictly for music, I can hardly stand playing games on there with your thumbs covering up much of the screen.
Basically, once I get a hold of one and get mess with it more, I'll decide if I'm gonna upgrade my PSP 1000 to a Go or a 3000. And the good will program will matter for me as well. Sony seriously has some work to do before October if they want to move enough units.
Yeah, I hope I get a chance to get hands on with it too, I want to see whether the controls will be a problem for me. Although this is the first person I've seen that has had a problem with the controls, most people have said it's an improvement on the current PSPs controls.
I'm just happy that this new one will be able to fit in my pocket. Deifnatley trading my Slim in for this. I also want the 16GB flash memory. =D
I'd rather just wait for the PSP2 while I hold onto my PSP1000 but who knows when that'll be announced or come out.
Its price is too high, but i might considering still getting it.Don't know yet.

Reading about the Go just makes me depressed...
There's no way the PSP faithful will adopt this in any significant volume. They already have a PSP1K, 2K or 3K and there just aren't enough [any?] compelling reasons to switch unless you are a total style-hound. In this economy there are a lot fewer folks like that out there... The economic downturn also compounds the barrier to entry for potential new PSP owners as the launch price is so insanely high.
My concern is that these circumstances are all conspiring before our very eyes such that the message Sony corporate is going to get as they review next year's sales figures, is simply that they can't compete against something like the DS...
When I first got my PS3, seeing the stuff referencing the PSP in the XMB made me want a PSP... mostly just so I could see what (if anything) I was missing. Then, when I got my PSP I saw this stuff about Sony's LocationFree product. I ended up buying it too.
Now the LocationFree product has been discontinued. (I guess Slingbox just kicked Sony's asses too severely for Sony to keep this product going.)
I sure hope that wasn't the beginning of a trend... First LocationFree is killed, then PSP?, then???

SONY has and will always have a problem with price, no matter what they make. Other companies like LG and especially Samsung have really stepped up in functionality and price in most products.
A very good review... I was sort of disappointed about hearing that it is a bit uncomfortable to use the buttons because my first glance opinion was that the psp go wasn't ergonomically designed very well. Also the sound problems isn't very good to hear. I will still buy it.. but I'm not really excited for it by any means. This will be my second PSP as my first psp died about 3 years ago when I slipped on boxes at work and fell on it. I am waiting to hear how I will play my old PSP games though.

None of the PSP's have ever been that loud, the PSP Go should sound alot clearer then my PSP 1000 tho.

From my understanding they are releasing the entire psp catalog onto the network for d/l....
Not 100% sure of it but I am about 85%...;)
No, I think they said it was going to be 100 or so of the most popular titles. They already have quite a lot of games on there.

I want a psp and this looks good just here in Aus its definetly not aimed at my demographic seeing as we dont have credit cards and no psn cards over here
It's all about the pricing. If the price is too high no one will buy this.

I was very interested in this after watching Gran Turismo on it , first i would need to hold it i dont have big hands but as times felt the old one was a bit awkward. Anyway i use the term "was" in the oppening sentence because when i did a little research and found out the price i was like **** that i cant spend that much. £150 and id be tempted but i wouldnt spend over £200
I noticed on the BBC website that they say it will go on sale in North America for $249 i dont know the current exchange rate but id imagine it would be cheaper to buy one from over there. But what implications would that have as you download all the games so i cant see any problem there??

...I think you're right. AFAIK, there wouldn't be any implications. There is no UMD Drive so you wouldn't have to bother with regions. A US PSP wouldn't restrict you to just buying content from the US Store... so yeah, you could just import one for a lot cheaper than it is to buy one here and with no problems.

$250 is around £150, so it could be worth it... import duty needs to be taken into account though, could be up to £40 if you're unlucky.
Like the guy said the price is something that may concern people and it sure is stopping me at the moment from getting one, as it's too much for me to justify and i already have a PSP 1000. B ut on another note i still think the GO looks sexier than ever

I think it's way to expensive. Also yes, I will talk about the there not being a second analog stick, which is ridiculous and a very stupid move on their part. The excuse was they didn't want a second analog stick since they will have backwards compatability or something completely rubbish like that, it was an idiotic excuse.
Way to much money again, bravo sony for being stupid.
No second analog stick (you think sony would have not made this mistake again) this isn't a PS1, geezes.

It's still a PSP, it's not PSP2 so saying that Sony "made this mistake again", doesn't make sense.
Backward compatibility means that if they had gone with a second stick, then you'll have devs that will focus more on the dual analog sticks and may ignore or not try as hard on getting it working nicely on the older PSP versions.
That does make sense. Even if someone says, "You can always have both." But we all know that it affects one another somewhere. Dev doesn't have time to get both things working perfectly. Time is money. If you give a dev two control configurations to work with, they will not do as good of a job (in general they won't, some will, some will fail miserably).
It does affect.
I dont mean to be negative but I think the Go will fail....

The Go is such a mixed bag. It has a lot of things people have been craving, but at the same time, it is neglected a lot of features. While there are reasons behind it, and some of them are valid, unless Sony comes out with a press release that has all of the major questions answered, I can't see the Go getting as much support as they think it will just because its a new, bright and shiny Sony product.

This guy is comparing an actual Game Platform handheld to a Iphone that's meant for taking pictures, talking, gps, internet and small non-hardcore games.
He needs to get shot.

Lol. That's a bit harsh. I think they compare specs, not what is actually available for the platform.

It's no secret that on the show, he worships the ground Steve Jobs walks on. I was expecting some sort of comparison.

No... its £250. Not $250. Wishful thinking though mate. You obviously dont watch the gadget show, which this is from, its a british programme on channel 5.... not america.
That said £250 is insanely overpriced, what are they thinking :suspect: Perhaps they would have a chance if it was a NEW psp, but its a revamp. How these big companies make money I don't have a clue anymore, insanity.

Actually, it's $250 and £250!
Ahh cheers, i keep forgetting dollars are equal to the pound now. crazy.

Also the psp 3000 is £240 with a game..... so... I dont doubt sont will charge £250 for this. Im not getting it, waiting...
Pretty much, yeah.

You never know, maybe the high price of this will drive PSP 3000 sales :/

PSP has and always will be the more hardcore experience. I've played some iphone games before, their not really that intensive or engrosing in my opinion. Like, you wont find something anywhere close to the level of Silent hill, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Killzone, Patapon 2 on your iphone or alteast at the level where you sit there playing these games for hours on end. I've sunk 65hours into Disgaea: Afternoon of darkness, that just wont happen on iphone.
If anything the iphone is more of a threat to the ds, before the iphone the ds ruled the casual market with games like brain teainers, how to stop smoking games and general app like software.
Now iphone has apps down pat, right? I get that but the PSP has nothing even close to app like software and in my opinion has quality games at the same level as PS3 titles right now.
Pretty much, yeah.
You never know, maybe the high price of this will drive PSP 3000 sales :/
 Haha, maybe that is their secret plan. Kinda sad though :-| I really do want to have a new psp, I dont mind spending my money on it, just if i think its worth it, im sure many people feel the same. If they clean their act up theyl be king of the hill again, yet I dont have much faith in people either for buying stuff like wii...... walking simulation.... and so on.
I don't understand anything anymore
Maybe I'll change my mind once I actually play one first-hand but as of right now I'd rather keep my current PSP and spend that $250 on a 16GB memory stick and some games. If I want to buy and download a game from PSN I can do that - if I want the UMD instead I can do that too and still have the same storage capacity as the GO.

Yeah cheers but I meant if he were to import it from America... hence the mention of import duty ;)
Just got a PSP 3000 today as an upgrade to my PSP 1000, I have to say, I'm really impressed. It's surprisingly light which I wasn't ready for after playing the brick that was my launch PSP. Everything's better, except for the analog stick, that seems quite sticky and imprecise.

PSP Go looks nice but $250 is crazy. $200 and I might think about it.
I've got the old brick and I gotta say I am very hapy with it... Although I rarely play it (except right now with Resistance:Retribution) I was considering getting a new one but this one is still kicking butt...:p

I don't really understand as a mibile gaming platform that it can be compared to the psp. i for 1 hate playing games on a i phone. Ill talk and tex on my phone and leave the game stuff to the PSP.

I'll second that opinion. Although the touchscreen interface is useful to navigate, it sucks as a gaming input method (at least with most of the executions I've seen so far).
Joysticks and Buttons with "tactile feedback" FTW!!!
Wow that reviewer is really annoying.
Ahh cheers, i keep forgetting dollars are equal to the pound now. crazy.
No it isn't, the current exchange rate for sterling to dollar is £1 - $1.642. So if you think about it we're paying ~$410 give or take. Guess that's nothing new being ripped off then.

I have an iPhone and PSP, and the iPhone is only meant for quick and simple games when you're on the go. The battery life is the real limitation. A full featured game would drain it quickly. I think the PSP go will have a really long battery life. I have the PSP1000 and you can play PSN games on it all day.
Talking strategically (and I hope some forum elders can counter these points) I do believe the iTouch is a competitor to the PSP Go. For me (and maybe others) games are a form of entertainment, just like music and movies. So when that one device achieves the right combination in each it becomes tempting i.e. the iTouch. The PSP may have the better games by a long way, but is it really enough to overcome its other shortcomings (and they are there) against the iTouch?
And I am a honest person and will just say no it is not really is it? The touch screen is a lovely OS an navigator, the music and video is a delightful combination and the App Store is a stunning piece of innovation. The PSP Go seems weak in all these comparisons...and when you come to spend that kind of money you want an all round device in the end, only the hardcore gamers will say otherwise, but really they are not a mass market and you cannot live off them...
So Sony really need to take this device and give it some better software and services, i.e. music and video download services, an application store, and some connectivity features and applications to stay in touch on the Go. And then they need to think about how to offer those services and applications in an innovative Sony way...
Just releasing this with some AAA titles (and this Q4 will be the best PSP line-up on record) will not cut it I am sad to say. Consumers have simply come to expect more.
Wow that reviewer is really annoying.
i really dont like there reviews. seem to vague imo
