Hay, i'm having a bit of trouble with my 360 as it started giving me trouble with artifacts in HD mode while playing a game of red faction so switched that HD/SD slider thing on the cable and back again to see if that helps and now my tv says "mode not supported" now and SD says there's no signal.
Can somebody tell me the steps needed to change the resolution without the use of a screen please?
sounds like your graphics card is ****ed dude. i started getting artifacts just before mine went. the consoles different to the ps3, i think it should auto adjust to the tv.
better wait for confirmation from someone else though
press and hold the y button on start up then pull the right trigger. apparantly
make sure you're using pad 1, and if wireless obviously start it from the guide button

Got an image back on the screen but it's as if it's just 16 colours or something.
Is it possable that the component cable is shot as i'm not getting a RROD or anything like that?

If you're starting to get artifacts on screen, your gpu may be failing. You won't get a 3 Red Light error but instead, a single red light I believe with an E74 error onscreen (much worse than the 3rrod).

Yeah, think it is the gpu on the way out, just it's odd that if I change resolution my tv keeps saying mode not supported and it seems to be picky when it actually is going to show a image on screen.
here's a pic of what the screen looks like when it's messed up...

the two (gpu failure and RROD) are so similar i wouldn't distinguish the two for MS.
I called up and explained my issue. The MS rep said it was a gfx card problem so it wasn't covered by the 3 year warranty. I replied that I'd keep my GPU failed 360 on until 3 red lights appeared :D and he said "ok give us a ring when that happens".
So I did.
The very next day.
It would have RROD'ed eventually if I'd kept it on 24/7. If MS want to fight against EU law then fair play, but gfx card problems are widespread too.....
if you need advice just PM me mate

I can't send it to MS unfortunately either as i've had the case apart and as it's a launch 20gb 360 it'd be out of the 3 year RROD warranty aswell. :(
Might have to see if I can get a cheap replacement or try and fix it myself if the x-clamp fix would work but not sure if it's the actual GPU failing or a heating issue.
unfortunately dude I'd say its a gpu issue. looking at your screen, and given others comments I'd say thats the problem.
Keep turning it on and off and you'll get the RROD. If you do then the 3 year warranty means **** all. You've got 6 years via the sale of goods act. Unfortunately you've opened the case. I'd maybe see if some geek on tinterweb can fix it, or whether MS cares. Maybe send it off as a RROD anyway and fail to mention you've opened it.
At the end of the day I think the whole "you can't open you property" idea is bull. And I doubt they check that rigerously.

I've decided to do the RROD fix by ordering some new screws, washers and paste for the x-clamps off ebay. Only costs £3 so might aswell give that a shot before binning the console or putting it up on ebay as spare parts..

Definitely look like GPU issue, as if the GPU has lost its drivers!

That might work/help but I dunno. If you get hit by a gpu error, it'll be very hard to fix (which is why I said it was worse than a 3rl error since the xclamp fix and stuff usually works for that problem)

A little update on whats gone on the past few weeks... I did the fix and got it working again for about a week but now it's back to the 16 color error thing after playing for about 10-15 mins. :(
Took me 4 and a half hours getting it working again though as it then decided to give me the RROD after doing the fix.
might try sell it and put the money towards a replacement 360.

I used to fix my launch 360. sometimes tighting/loosening the screws helps. i was surprised to find that I had it clamped down to tight at one point, and pulling back the screws a 1/4 turn made all the difference. Few months later I had to tighten them etc.
Just leave it in pieces and play around a bit, turning it on for 30 seconds at a time withough it being enclosed and cooled won't matter to much.
Might even help a bit if you haven't tried the heatgun yet.
not really ethical but you could buy a new one, be very careful, and then switch em and return it...
that's what i would do at least...
after all it's not your fault the thing failed, why should u have to pay

Yeah, I had the screws too tight the first few times so I even removed the metal washers so it's just the spring washers underneath the board and the nylon ones on the top. Not tried the heatgun trick either as not got one and no idea where to get one around here just to borrow.

Shame the casing on my 360 is quite scratched due to me removing the case quite a few times lately.
lol if you make the box look as if it was never opened they wont notice... course if you screw it up and look inside then ur kinda fked...
then u just leave a surprise for the next customer so that the complaints about gamestop will pile up...
if ur worried about it you could pay by cash tho...

eh if your gonna do it, do it at walmart/k-mart/zellers. Your going to have to switch at least the top of the case either way, as the serial number shows outside the box...and I'm pretty sure it gets scanned. So you have to be careful with the warranty sticker... which I doubt walmart is going to check.
Gamestop might check closer than the ladies at walmart.
In the end though it's probably not worth it, it's just $200. I would sell the broken 360, keep the harddrive and pay the difference. Save yourself some trouble. Peace of mind is a good thing.

Unfortunately i'm in the UK and don't have any of those stores and the only one I know of is GAME and that's a good drive away aswell as living in the country side has it's downside for easy access to stores like that.
I'll just keep playing about with the screws until it works a little and probably stick it on ebay as working and get about £60 to go towards a new one.. I could even list it as faulty and still get around £25 for it.
