View Full Version : I have become a semi trophy *****.
Alright, so...I used to kind of hate the idea of trophies. I didn't get it. You play a game a certain way and you get an icon for it...wooptidoo. Who cares!
Well, actually, people do. I think I'm finally getting the full gist of it.
I see two benefits of trophies. Two huge benefits. First, I don't need to ask anyone if they've played a game or not (recent ones and this works better if they've had their user name for a long time and it's their main user name).
Second, the idea of taking your accomplishments with you is a great idea. To me, personally, gone are the days of stats. I personally don't care about checking anyone's stats anymore and stats make the game LAME. You end up playing like a preppy *****.
"Oooo I can't get killed because it will lower my KDR."
"Oooo I want to make a new screen name just to screw around."
Boring!
It's all about trophies now. So much easier to check someone's progress. Not even progress, just to check if they liked the game enough to earn a few trophies here and there. If someone has less than 10%, they obviously either didn't like the game or the trophies were too hard.
Anyway!
I'm still not as big of a ***** to get a game based on if it has trophies or not or a crappy game just to earn an easy platinum. I won't ever go that far.
I wasn't even that excited about trophies when I got Burnout: Paradise 11 days ago. I just popped it in and started playing.
After an hour, I had unlocked 10 trophies for it...I was like, "Hmm, interesting." I looked at the list and some of the trophies looked doable.
I kept trying and trying and tackled every trophy separately. I got so hooked that I played for hours on end just trying to get the trophies. If they were just in-game achievements, I would not have cared.
So finally, last night, I got the platinum for Burnout, I was actually very excited about it. It was my first platinum ever. I usually just give up. This took some work but it was doable.
I really want all trophies to be easy like this.
What I love about trophies is that it is now tied permanently to my user name, even after years on end, anyone can check to see that I completed Burnout.
That's what I didn't get about trophies before. Truly makes them worth it.

Really nice to hear :)
I agree, and find it great how its attached to MY name forever, probably even through the PS4 and PS5!
When the first came out i *****d over trophies for AGES and AGES, i thought they were awesome and tried to get as many as i can - never bought a crappy game for the sake of getting them either
Now, i just play and get what i get, but if the trophies are a fun enough challenge, ill go for them for sure, but if they are too hard or time consuming (Currently looking at you U2 Crushing!) i wont bother :P
Trophies are a great and interesting way to show progress and get some self satisfaction from gaming.
Glad to hear your a semi-***** now Sufi!

Yep, another thing to mention is they prolong the life of a game alot more than normal. I don't see it as "trophy whoring" but getting the full fun factor of doing something and getting something because you accomplished it. When you are trophy whoring or achievement whoring is when you play games like Hannah Montana, Where The Wild Things Are, Harry Potter...ect then its official, until then its just having fun collecting trophies.
sorry, but with that dismal trophy card, you have not even developed into a training bra of a trophy *****.

Listen to this man. This is the guy who played Hannah Montana for the trophies.
True story.

Weird to see PS3 guys liking Trophies seeing as though many here were crapping on Achievements. Cool though. I love Trophies and Achievements. I need to get more PS3 games to up my Trophy count, though.

Love em obviously. They really make a game last that much longer.
i just hope you saw how much fun Burnout was anyway and continue to play it.

Hey, I never hated achievements but I never loved them either...didn't get why people liked them, same for trophies, until ... recently, in the past few months.

yup

it's one of the best games i've played this generation!

If there are a few trophies you can't get stop playing the game won't help, you just have to keep trying. You quit trying to platinum a game because of a few trophies you will never get platinum you gotta keep trying. Trust me, there is a sense of accomplishment when you see that Platinum trophy pop up after trying so hard to get that last trophy to unlock it.
i only have a few plats, and to be honest im not that into getting the plats, if you are on my friends list and compare trophies, i have a few trophies here and there, but you can see the games that i have got into as i have more trophies.
I think that they are a good addition to games, and they definately do improve the longeivety of games, i just find that there are a few trophies that are stupidly hard to get which is why i give up on getting the plats.
I dont have the time to sit down and play a game for hours to get that last trophy, but i mean fair play to those that can sit down like that. for me it would just frustrate me.
See honestly I would've had more plats if I did have time. I just never get time anymore...so I have to kind of give up on some games. I know I could've easily gotten a plat for BF:BC and Fallout 3 but it would've taken me another month each...don't have that kinda time.
Biggest benefit for trophies for me is replayability. I used to just play a game through till I finished it and hardly ever played it again. Now I replay the games anywhere between 3-4 times to unlock the difficulty trophies and one's I miss. I feel I get my monies worth that way too!

For me some trophies give a great sense of acomplishment even if I was not having fun during the time to get it. This seems to balance off I guess.

I will only really bother with them now if I like the game enough to want to play through it enough to get all the trophies. If a game gets too boring I will stop playing. Waste of time playing something if you don't enjoy doing it.
I have achieved 9 Platinums out of a possible 18
So half of my games haven't made me want to collect them all. Not because all of them aren't good but some of them are just too time consuming and hard.
There are games I feel I could have Platinumed if I had wasted my life playing for hours upon hours for 4/5 months straight. (Resistance 2, Battlefield: Bad Company)
As such there are about 4 or 5 games in my "cabinet" that are between 70-90% complete.

@Sufi That's awesome I'm glad you'd enjoyed your first platinum.. I love trophies.. Even though i have only one platinum there's a few games I've have where i only have 2 trophies left to get the platinum's.. But my first platinum was Burnout.. I'm glad you can appreciate trophies for what they are..
tho i dont have many and arnt even close to getting a platinum i enjoy the aspect of trophys and look forward to unlocking more. i also like the way that they will be with me for everyone else to see and know how much effort i put into that said game. i also check for games that have trophys as next games to purchase. so i think developers are gonna be missing out on more sales if they dont put trophys into games. also older games need trophys that would be awesome. ill keep chipping away and hopfully a platinum one day
congrats on ur first platinum! burnout is a kick a55 game

Yeah, I love trophies, too. They make the game last more longer, and helps peope keep track of your game progression. Definitely going to get my first Platinum very, very soon.
