Take the HDD out into an external case, transfer all you need, put it back in and do a factory reinstall? Mine was the same not long ago, just had a black screen past the first very first loading screen.

Cheers, man, the monitor I want has a HDMI port so I'm assuming I can just plug a HDMI cable in and away I go, right? The monitor doesn't have built-in speakers, though, so will need to get a nice set of speakers. All of this is for a good cause, too, am looking to move out into my own place.

On an unrelated note, can anyone recommend me some movies? I've started building a HD movie collection (which I will transfer to my external HDD) and so far have Buried, Easy A, V For Vendetta, The Hangover, 127 Hours and Black Swan. I want any recommendations you people have, must be good though.

what steff said. also mate, try recovery software, or pay a professional to do it. for photos of your kid its probably worth it. at least get a quote.
Well, as these are photos that only I have - i.e I've refused to share them with the mother - and I have no other copies, I'm gonna go ahead and say, yeah, getting a professional to look at it to try and recover them is a choice I'm willing to make. As for price? You can't put a price on an irreplaceable memories.

When my external HDD ****ed up and i had to format it i was able to torrent some sofware which restored about 500GB of stuff on there. Took about 20 hours but was definitely worth it.

Managed to restore half of it last night, with help from Ownzilla. Got all my photos of my little girl back, that's what counts.
