View Full Version : Sony: 'Home no longer a priority'
Sony's Pete Edwards has admitted that PlayStation Home no longer has "priority" status, Edge has reported.
Speaking at the London Games Conference, the director said that the firm has proved that there is a market for the online community and no longer sees its development as its first concern.
"It's been a long road," he said. "We've proved there is a market out there and we've got a lot of people that spend a lot of time in [Home]. It's not a priority right now but there is a business model there."
Home is a community-based social gaming networking service launched by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2008. A similar network for the PSP called RooM is currently being beta tested in Japan.
Edwards previously revealed that the average European Home user spends an average of 56 minutes with the service per session.

I'm sorry, when was it ever their priority? It's still in Beta...

Good, focus on other things. I was never excited about Home and never will be. Used it once and would never use it again. Not trying to offend anyone, just not my thing...
In my opinion, the European Home needs more to have more content added. I think Home is very good, but I will just like to see more items and game areas on it :/ Although I'm not really a big fan of Home.

Honestly, I don't mind it one bit. I'm not an active Home user, for I believe that Home really is nothing close to what it potentially could have been. I have remaining faith that Sony will someday fix Home, and perhaps make it something a bit more worth my time, but for the moment what Sony does with home is irrelevant to me.
As for those who are active users of Home, hopefully this isn't too big of a let down.
So long as Sony does not abandon Home altogether, I'm perfectly alright with this decision.

all this means is that the service is sustainable and doesnt require much more input from them.
we will still see new stuff in home probarly care of third party developers, and advertisers.
If people spending 56 minutes in home it makes sense to throw in more ads/ product spaces.
it also opens the question... if home is no longer priorty ...what is?

Sony: 'Home no longer a priority'
Ya think?
So I take it we're just not going to get stuff like media streaming and the trophy room?

making my bed isnt a priority...i still do it
sony will still make stuff for home, just most of the groundwork has been done now so they dont need as many resources

Yes. Edge should of asked him what he meant by that. I think he means because Home is out and doing well, they (Sony) no longer have to focus on it as top priority. Sony is not going to abandon Home as long as its making them money from the users and other companies.

Home is a great idea I just don't see how they can do it for free.

You seen the amount of items they sell in the Mall? That is how. Not to mention the companies paying for spaces.

i was skeptical about home while i was a box owner. i checked 2nd life out then didnt like how it worked and was thinking home was to be a lame ripoff. i was pleasantly surprised when i got my ps3 slim a few days ago even thouhg its not sonys priority it is pretty cool and with a little more work could be really satisfying.

Good work !
Very cool, looking great so far. Keep going, I wanna see it finished!
I'm surprised it's as successful as it is now, to be brutally honest.
Especially when it's still in its beta stage.
However, I would still be surprised if Home actually breaks any new ground.

Home i feel is not for everyone.. Me personally i like Home, I just think they need to do something about the loading times.. Other than that Home is nice..

I agree, there was a HUGE amount of hype from Sony about Home but in my opinion it didn't hit its mark and wasn't as successful as Sony hoped.

I have no doubt that it will just keep improving over the years, with content and games and support and all that jazz... but its not a console seller...

Can't wait for PSP RooM!
what i dont understand is why cant the psp get the freaking friend list thats on your ps3?! and now we have this pspRoom that has nothing to do with HOME! its like everything about the playstation(ps3/psp and whatever else they have) is not very well thought out and integrated!
there shouldnt be a reason why i cant communicate with my friends using a freaking psp! i should have to remote play just to use that feature set

I can tell you have not been in Home. Yes, LOTS of people buy them. Sony made something like a million bucks off of Homes first month.

people shouldnt be so skeptical 2nd life created an entire economy for petes sake sony is emulating that with some success
I like home(rarely get on really)but it think its kinda stupid they charge REAL money for FAKE virtual clothes and furniture...they were saying we were going to be able to buy things with trophies,...

So focus on playstation motion control games and such now give it a good release with plenty of software lineup
saznercj

forget motion control in my experience wii and playstation three motion control is hard to get immersive. the new 360 thing, cant think of its name now but that seems the path to take develop the ps eye into a periph that can really blow your mind.
and the virtual economy is kinda crazy but if u think about it you buy costume packs in little big planet and new levels in a game you have y not a t shirt of your fav game or a hat for your avatar that avctually represents you

Obviously once it's outta the gate it goes down the priority list, like right now my priority is to get 90% marks in my Metriculation exams, but it won't be after i've taken the exams.Same deal really,Sony will keep updating Home, becuz Sony sees something a lot of us blatently ignore,it's potential for the future,i.e. when the ps4 launches,by then Home will have been brought to that next level.but i do hope they don't abandon it(i think they won't).Focus on the motion wands for pete's sake!
I'd have to agree with their decision.
It kind of saddens me that they put so much work and passion into what we know now as "Home", and that it didn't live up to their expectations. But oh well. I'd much rather see the time and effort go into something more worthwhile.
About time. It was utterly crap from the start off.

You people keep saying such like Sony came out and said Home has been a failure, when they've actually said and shown its not. :-\
