View Full Version : House I made for a video game

I haven't done 3D work for video games in a while (been busy with school), but a small video game company that a few of my friends work for asked me to help them out a bit a few weeks ago.

I'm not sure about any of the details on the game, except its going to be on the PC and its a dark, comic-like game. I was asked to help do one of the levels and I've been working on it for about four weeks now. Apparently they had someone recently quit that did enviroments (something I do freelance), so they called me lol. I'm getting paid crap, so don't think I'm super excited.

This is actually one of seven "pieces" that I've made for the game. I actually made this house a while back and just decided to make a few small adjustments instead of creating a whole new house. It's not done yet, but this is the last stage that I can display, after this it goes through a bunch of stages that are too long to explain. Some of the textures aren't the final textures (they are there to ease the hardware renderer).

Anyways, for those interested:

Maya
Photoshop

Software Rendered
Area Lights are lighting it
Windows are ray-traced (hard to tell from this angle)

Took about 10 hours to get to this stage.

I got another...ummmm...15 "pieces" to make, then I'll put it all together with about three other people...get paid...and then I'm done lol.

hey, cool man. You are using Maya as well. I have been working with Maya for about a year now. But I am not that good in it...Sometimes the program can be a little frustrating :?
Great job! And getting paid is the best!

Looks damn good! It kinda reminds me of the house in the mystery screensaver which was there in win98.

ooo lovely little house there :D

I lost the model file for my "dream" house i was making... damn thing took me 5 hours to make it.
Oh well easily done again, and quicker since i learnt alot about the program since then, yay for me!

Ive used Maya a bit, i really dont like its interface though... i prefer Blender to it, combined with Yafray also.
Maya is better for doing animations though, thats for sure!

Is the character able to enter this house, or is it just a filler in the game world?
Or do you not know yet? hehe.

Looks pretty cool, I usually use Cinema 4D for these kind of pieces, I'm only starting using Maya now, but I think its much better for organic things...

is Cenima 4d or Maya free or do we have to get illeagel copies.

No, Cinema 4D and Autodesk Maya aren't free. Maya 's price goes from 2000$ to 7000$, it depends on what version you want. For Cinema 4D I don't know the price.
You can get a learning edition of it though. I think you can get it here: www.autodesk.com
there you can download a 3DsMax trial as well.

In my opinion Autodesk Maya is the best 3d program you can get right now, although it is really expensive. You really get what you want. Maya is the most used program for games and movies!
The special effects in the Lord of the Rings are made with Maya only! As you see, amazing.

This are some of my works:

Not as good as the graphics in LOTR but I am satisfied! I used a learning book for this, I didn't think of the designs myself. Making something you have no example ( so you know what kind of things all to use) of, is really difficult. Great job Hippo!

Wow, cool house! What game is it for? Looks haunted.

I don't know the name of the game, they told me it a while back but I forgot. I don't think its a dark game...just a haunted, comedy game...or something like that. Its a small company, this is only their like...fifth or six game. I don't know how there other games did though.

Yeah, you can go in the house, but I'm not making that part. That will be done in 3D Studio Max (which I'm not that good with) since Studio Max is good with really deep architectual areas.

Note, the only thing that I've animated is the "girl in the window", though its kinda hard to see, she actually moves around and plays with her doll. She's the only character I am aware of, I haven't seen the rest.

I'm only a temp remember. Rawr, that's pretty good. Do you have to go to their company's cubicle in order to work, or do you do it at home? I'm assuming the former, otherwise they can't really count the hours, now, can they ;)?

Oh yeah, Maya FTW :)!

do you use Silo for any of your modeling? i find Silo to be the best block modeling tool on the market. Have you ever used Zbrush? it is a great tool for displacement maps and detailing as well as normal map creation.

I use maya, Zbrush, and silo for my 3d work. and my renderer of choice is Renderman( i like the Sub-D render render speeds apposed to the ones mental ray).

I work from home, that's why I don't know much that is going on. Its not a big company, they only have a small office in a large office building.

I've worked for larger game developers in the past, as a temp though, and some of the games that I've done work on (very little in terms of the grand scale) have actually been pretty successful. Not always modelling or texturing though, often they'll hire me as a temp to help with the "boring" stuff (pre-production, code testing, ect). Again, this isn't my career lol, but I do get plenty of work since I know a lot of people in the gaming industry. Interesting to note, if they actually opened their mouths I'd probably be a hero on some boards, but alas, they don't tell me crap.

If I have some free time I'll try to upload more stuff I've done, that house just happened to be on my desktop.

Oh, and for those concerned, programs I have used/or use:

Photoshop (given lol)
Maya
3D Studio Max
Rhino
Vertex
Zbrush

I don't use Renderman, only Mental Ray. And I've never used Silo.

you should try out silo, they have a free trial of it on thier site http://www.nevercenter.com/

it may make your work easier, and it is a very cheap product(very small download).

renderman cost me a bundle but it was well worth it my renders dont take forever whenever i use motion blur.

Personally, I hate Rhino. Used it to NURB model two models, and that was it. I absolutely hated it after that. I just don't like the idea of NURBS, Sub-D has been growing on me ever since :P.

Yeah, Rhino sucks lol, I'm not about to deny that.

nurbs are good for certain situations, it is sometimes good to start a basic cartoony model in nurbs then convert it to polys. that is atleast what i do for my cartoony models. everything else is block modeling then throw it into Zbrush(i love that program). i still suck at UV layout and am about to buy some training material to get better.

:D I think i know the game its going to be for but it just looks similar, but is it for a movie game after that monster house movie. It looks almost identical except mabe the window is on opposite sides. though you did a very good job.

I hated making NURBs in Blender... i dont know why since they are really easy to make them look nice, but they just tend to annoy me more than making things myself.. feels to artficial. Could be because im a perfectionist
Tried to use a NURB sphere to make a lamposts bulb.. haha i got so mad i deleted the file i was working on.. damnit i liked that street! :(

Want to know whats fun, making a volcano =)
*headbutts table repeatedly*
MAN its hard, especially when it goes into the water... argh my head hurted alot doing that (actually, still doing it technically... i left it for a bit hehe)
And i cant really finish it till ive seen how a river actually forms.. at the start.
I know theres all these little streams that come together, but ive only seen it in diagram which really isnt helpful at all.. :|

As for the game, would love it if it was a horror-ish theme.
In fact, if comedy is there as well, 10x better cause alot of people try to combine horror and comedy but come out bad. (in films also)
Comedy + horror = fantastically amazing

I wonder what else you are going to add to it since you said you have another 15 pieces or so to do.
Cant wait to see :P

nurbs converted to polys = unholy disaster

I'm updating my status with them tomorrow, if I can remember I'll try to ask a few things about the game (maybe a website or something)...

...that or they'll just give me more work lol

I have three other projects I'm currently involved with, but none of them are past the pre-production phase, which could take another 2-3 months. Hopefully over the next few years I can get much better (still consider myself very low on the skill chain) and my name gets out, and then maybe I can do some nex-gen work with architecture...we'll see though.
