I have had my ps3 since launch but have not really used the blu ray player much except for the talledega nights movie that came with the ps3. But im considering buying another blu player for another part of the house and making bluray what i use now but i have a question first.
When i got the HD channels on comcast the change was huge from a regular channel. What i want to know if the change is as big when changing from dvd to bluray.

The sound quality difference is HUMONGOUS with blu-ray compared to dvd (if you have surround sound). As far as picture quality goes it really depends on the blu-ray. With older movies I would say yes, the picture quality will be MUCH better compared to the DVD version. But with newer movies that were filmed with HD cameras the picture quality on DVD is pretty good with the PS3 (because it has a good up converter). If you have a 1080p TV and surround sound I would definitely say go with blu-ray, it's worth it. If you're lacking surround sound and have a small TV, or a 720p TV, it might not be worth it. What is your setup?

If you've got the right TV, then the difference will immense. Even with my cheap 720p Vizio plasma the difference is exceptional from DVD to BD.
Not all BDs are created equal, as there are several variables that all play a factor in how well the picture quality turns out. But if you can't readily tell the difference between SD and HD (even on a cheap HDTV), then you must not have the correct gene.

i have a 32 inch OLEVIA TV. No surround sound or anything like that. And i believe it only goes up to 720p or 1080i, i don't have the option of 1080p under the ps3 options.

With that setup I would have to say that only certain blu-rays are going to be worth buying. As far as new movies go (like any movie made in the last 5 years) you really aren't going to see a HUGE difference with the blu-ray. You DEFINITELY won't see as big of a difference as switching from SD to HD cable. The reason is simple - the PS3 upconverts DVDs to HD and it does a pretty damn good job of it.

What is your setup? WHAT?! this doesn't make any sense...simple math tells you that Blu-ray is better no matter what...a blu-ray image is 1920x1080 pixels...a DVD image is 720x480 pixels...so you're telling me you think allowing the PS3 to actually CREATE the missing pixels is just as good? come on...
ALSO...you mention older movies getting the benefit, but not new ones filmed with "HD Cameras" you realize that actual film has a MUCH higher "resolution" than 1080p "HD Camers" right? film has the capacity for holding MUCH more information and detail than 1080p does...

1. I disagree....on my old Samsung 32" 720p LCD i noticed a MONSTER difference going from DVD to Blu-ray...considering how so-so most HD cable broadcasts are, and how compressed the signal is there is no comparison between the quality of HD cable, and Blu-ray...
2. The PS3 (or any BD player for that matter) can not make an image HD...upconverting simulates HD by creating pixels that are not there...there is NO substitute for actual HD...
When i got the HD channels on comcast the change was huge from a regular channel. What i want to know if the change is as big when changing from dvd to bluray. many movies, yes i feel the answer is that big...
as was stated though not all blu-rays are created equal. Unfortunately the extra resolution can bring out problems that were hidden by SD resolutions...Also, if the orignal masters of the film were not well taken care of the extra resolution can cause problems...

I think you will notice a difference with your 32 inch, but of course as you go up in size/quality/resolution of the TV itself you will notice MORE of a difference...

First of all I NEVER said that DVDs are AS good as Blu-rays. Second of all read the OP - his question was will there be AS BIG OF A DIFFERENCE going from DVD to blu-ray as there was with switching from SD to HD cable. The answer is as I said - it DEPENDS - on a few things. The difference between, say, Transformers on DVD and Blu-ray (as played through the PS3) is NOT that big of a difference in PICTURE quality when you only have a 720p 32" television. I don't really care about all your technical details of upconverting, etc etc - watch both versions on DVD and then Blu-ray as I HAVE (on a 37" TV) and then make an argument - the picture quality difference is MINIMAL on that small of a TV (and DEFINATELY not as big of a difference as switching from SD to HD cable - NOT EVEN CLOSE). The only BIG difference is going to be SOUND quality and the OP doesn't even have surround sound.
And again, about your argument regarding film and HD cameras - I DON'T CARE ABOUT ALL YOUR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE - newer movies look MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better on DVD than old movies do, PERIOD. There is no argument here - it's a fact. I don't care about how much "information" is stored on film - I care about the way it looks when I put the disc in my PS3 and press play.

If you have a playstation 3 you shouldn't buy another blu-ray player. Sony updates its player regularly.

You need help....regardless I don't think i agree with you that you can make a blanket statement that new movies automatically look better than older movies its just not a statement you can make and is certainly not FACT....and you SHOULD care about the information stored on film as it makes you sound uneducated on the subject what you try to make comments on topics that you don't understand from a technical standpoint...;)

It doesn't have to be understood from a technical standpoint - all you need is eyeballs that function properly to see that new DVD releases look far better than old DVD releases. Seriously name ONE movie filmed prior to 1995 that looks better on DVD than ANY movie filmed after 2005. There is no way you will find one. I own a lot of DVDs and you can see how the quality has slowly gotten better over the last 20 years.
And btw the anger is because you talk to people on this forum like they're all ****ing stupid. I have an Aerospace Engineering degree and 5 years of experience as an engineer, I'm now a project manager at 28 years old and considering the rep I have here compared to how many posts I've made I'd say people respect my opinion. I was telling the OP what I've observed with my own two eyes and no one else seems to have a problem with what I've posted...except you. Just because I don't spat out technical jargon in every post I make doesn't mean I'm uneducated on the topic.

1. Don't care where you work, it doesn't impress me...
2. I don't think you are stupid, and never in anyway implied that anyone in this thread was stupid...I don't think anyone on these forums is stupid...im just stating my opinion like you did...
3. I don't have a problem with what you posted, i just disagreed and stated that...
all your experience, age, and rep has apparently not prepared you for dealing with people that have differing opinions than your own...

There's a difference between disagreeing (or having a differing opinion) and TALKING DOWN to someone. I have no problem when people have different opinions then me - YOU are the only person I've seen on here that talks down to people - you do it ALL THE TIME. The next time you do it to me I'm gonna tell you to go **** yourself.

who am i talking down to? what did i say that could be considered talking down to you?...i'd love to see in this thread what could have possibly caused you to think i was talking down to you...
i do it "ALL THE TIME" too huh?...examples??...
sounds to me like you have your panties in a bunch over something...and now im supposed to be scared of you because you might swear at me?? oh boy....just so you know you're coming across as a real classy person right now :hand
