View Full Version : Xbox Live 'More Juvenile' than PSN, says Zipper

Makers of the PS3's MAG explain why they think PlayStation Network is a better fit for their game.

The Xbox Live community is often criticized for overly boorish behavior, but rarely do you see the criticism coming from what could be considered a direct competitor. In explaining why he thinks MAG is a better fit for the PlayStation Network, Zipper Interactive's Ben Jones said it came down to a certain lack of maturity on Microsoft's network.

"I actually consider Xbox Live the more juvenile of the two," Jones said to GamerZines earlier this week (via Edge-Online), citing "the things that are being said over Xbox Live" (although he didn't mention anything more specific than that).

"Each service has its own posse," Jones explained. "I think the PlayStation audience definitely fits more to our game. As we saw in the beta we've got an audience that's willing to communicate and willing to organize and structure, and help other people to play the game. That's the most remarkable thing that I saw in the beta -- random people helping other players along to try and familiarize themselves with this really cool experience."

If nothing else, this speaks to a public perception problem Microsoft has with their online service. Still, it is quite the generalization for Jones to make publicly, but then if you've played a significant amount of time on Xbox Live, can you really blame him for making it? Really?

Oh wow!, bet he wasn't saying that when Crimson Skies was the most played game on xbox live.

It's a classic PR move. Zipper has game on PS3, compliments online system of said game's system while simultaneously insulting competitor's online system (although this is unique in that it insults competitor's fans that use that online system).

The reality is likely the difference in people that have mics. As far as I know, most people still have to physically go to a store and purchase a mic for the PS3 while the 360 comes with one (usually). More people being vocal on Live usually will equate to more idiotic statements.

Stupid generalization if you ask me. I have seen my fair share of homophobic racist idiots on Live but taking into account that I normally find half as many people with mics on the PSN I have probably seen just as many jackasses there. They are however very different types of jackasses.

I don't see too many of said racist jackasses on PSN, I mainly see people that take the game too seriously and love to trash talk.

Not only that but xbox has sold more systems over all than ps3 so of course more people means more idiots. Its the WoW syndrom. Ps3 may get to that point but the dev looked at right now and made a choice.

Doesn't stop him from being right. LIVE is much better integrated with the console and an overall smoother experience- But it has the most annoying people ever.

Ergo why "XBL parties" and "Private chats" rock on XBL. And why when Infinityward removed that feature from MWF2 I almost had a stroke.

Now why might this be? A variety of reasons:

1. The 360 has a slightly larger install base
2. Most 360's came with a headset at launch
3. The PS3 was and still is more expensive
4. PS3 "Bluetooth headsets" are pricey
5. PS3 didn't come with headsets pre-packaged

Lol I thought that was rather stupid as well, COD players really get on my nerves sometimes. I think many of them fit into the aforementioned take the game too seriously category.

Regardless he IS obviously right because of the simple number difference in users but there is simply no way to tell if the people in both crowds are different. Mine was just a personal observation.

Eh? I mean i guess you could say that if your comparing it to an arcade, which then you gotta get a harddrive for. Elite same price, pro i guess but then its only $50 which is nothing. But if your price comparing the arcade to a ps3 might as well compare a fully loaded BMW to a manuel KIA.

Do you do what I do and just mute everyone in your game that is not your friends? :X

Absolutely it's what I do.

Because if I had to listen to every 8-10 year old brat who convinced their mommies and daddies to buy them an M rated game I'd probably be on a roof with a sniper rifle.

I think both networks are full of bewbs. That's why I turn the chat volume to zero when I play MW2 on PS3.

But it really depends on which game you're playing. If you're playing MW2, then forget about it. But I met a lot of cool people on Gears of War 1 back in the day. And like Ben Jones just mentioned, there's a lot of cool people on MAG as well.

I think you proved this dudes point elegantly.

In my experience between the two, I have heard the same. An army of homophobic and racist banter, even on what I thought was one of the most mature games I played on live (RB6V).

PSN has shown me people who are very serious about their games but I would rather that, then the crap I have heard on live.

I never played Crimson skies on live so I guess that must be some sort of golden game huh? Was there voice chat on that game?

To each his own, both annoy me equally.

In my experience, I hear the same amount of trash on both consoles. I use the block and mute features to their full extent when this happens.

I think there is some truth to this, but indeed I agree with a lot of you guys saying it is a PR move due to MAG coming out this week.

I think to some extent it is true because most XBL gamers have headsets where as a lot of PSN ones do not. Certainly this has been a factor in my choice for where to game lately. It just gets tiring dealing with these people who have the IQ of a potato. I mean that isn't to say that I don't deal with these types of people on the PSN, cause I do...It just seems far less frequently.

I am looking forward to MAG simply because the only people you can hear in the lobby are your teammates...No more having to listen to people scream into my ear about how they are going to physically harm me in the most disgusting of sexual manners.

On the other hand I wonder if this guy participated in the beta for his own game at all; "As we saw in the beta we've got an audience that's willing to communicate and willing to organize and structure, and help other people to play the game." That is a flat out lie. I will say that right now. In the probably 24+ hours I put into the beta I rarely ran across a squad leader with a mic, and even if people had a mic they weren't helping other people. They were just screaming profanities lol. I think this behavior can hardly be prevented by the game developers, I am just saying they shouldn't just lie about it. Maybe coming out with this article was a bad move?

Maybe they should just let their game speak for itself rather than trying to fight the competition with bad press? This to me says they are somewhat worried about how the game is going to do. I see it all the time in competition, the team with the least confidence always chooses to go the way of attacking their competitors instead of letting their product stand up.

Tell me about it. I've heard so much racist shi.t from "older" gamers. I'd love to have the ability to permaban those idiots.

There is some truth to that but you really cant blame xbox live for peoples ignorant behavior.

It`s all a matter of their opinion. They are all gamers and I`m sure some of them are Live Subscribers and this could easily be how they perceive the situation on Live in comparison to the PSN.

That doesn`t make it true in all situations, but it could be their personal experience with the platform.

He's right...but at what cost? None, really. The only reason it's true is because XBL has had certain key community chat features since the beginning and megapopular multiplayer games for gamers everywhere to flock to the console whereas PSN is slowly evolving into said situation so there are currently less people involved. It's not like Sony installed moral compasses into their PS3s .
