With summer eating us alive, attention's turning to the first delights of the upcoming third and fourth quarter release schedules - and Dead Rising is chief amongst the early feasts.
It's due out on September 8th in Europe, and Capcom's just whacked up an extended trailer on Xbox Live Marketplace, which you can check out now. And if you do, you'll be pleased to note that a demo is "coming soon".
Hopefully that means it'll be up in time for our release date. Capcom already has a good record in this regard; Dead Rising will be its first Xbox 360 title, but 360 owners can already download a two-part playable demo of its other big exclusive, Lost Planet, which isn't even out until next year.
Dead Rising is due out on September 15th here (although that appears to be a movable target), but it'll be out sooner in the US, with a release set over there for August 8th.
We'll let you know when the demo goes live, so to speak.
Update: Capcom sends word that DR is due out here on Sept. 8th, not 15th as it said on its press site. "Moving target" was quite prescient then!
This must be first time I'm excited about demo!

I like how there are so many ways to finish the demo, each with its own cut-scene, I think there is MUCH more to the game than simple zombie killing. Although that's great fun as well!

I downloaded the demo and played a couple times. I think the game is very funny and alot of fun. Being able to use items in more ways then one makes for thousands of ways to kill zombies. I like using the golf club, hot frying pan, oil, and dishes. The demo is just a sample of bigger things. I can't wait to get it. 2 must have games this month. I'm going to be broke!

the food court upstairs behind the counter you can get a pan then heat it upon the stove till it turns red then your good but too burn the zombies with the pan you have to hold down the attack button. LOL...this game has so many things to use and this is just the demo can't wait till the full game comes out.

The demo is very enjoyable, with good controls and nice graphics. There seems to be many different paths through the demo (e.g. entering certain areas or just survive long enough). Each exit seems to have its own twist to the story. But while the demo shows that there are multiple ways to kill zombies, and it also shows how open the game is.
It fails in that in that it doesn’t show any of the tasks you have to perform throughout the game. Hopefully these tasks will be keeps this game from becoming a zombie slaying feast. But from videos I have seen, I know we will be able to interact with other survivors and perform task for them. The mission (case?) in this demo is to help some guy called brad in the food court. It would have been nice if the food court was included, so that we could see that the game is more than just slaying zombies in different ways. Well I’m assuming it hasn’t been include because I couldn’t find it and no one here has mentioned it.
However if you play the demo a few times and explore, you’ll see that the story does seem like it’s going to be real interesting.
Anyway with the possibility of brining this thread to a new low, I’ll ask why do the male zombies seem to bite your neck when attacking, while the females seem to either go for your neck or your nuts (genitals)? But just wiggle that stick of yours and they’ll realize they have bitten off more than they can chew.

Yah the story may be interesting. I just want to see more of the mall and get different weapons and kill more zonbies! :D
First, the pros:
1) The graphics are great, although I somehow managed to get some pretty serious slowdowns a couple of times, luckily other than those times the game ran perfectly fine. So no real complaining about the graphical side of this game.
2) The game has tons of different weapons and items you can kill zombies with. Some are cool, some are pretty pointless. Still, there has been some serious thinking in the thinking of possible weapons and how to use them.
The cons:
1) Playing the game = XXXXXAXXXXXXXXXXXAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXAXXXX, no matter what you're using as a weapon. :| Way too repetitive for me. The story doesn't seem that interesting, so there is no real replay value FOR ME.
2) Not scary at all. Just a zombie slaughter fest, which I don't care that much for.
So basically this is a great looking, yet highly repetitive game. Some like it so much they will buy this game, I on the other hand will save my money for something that is a bit more complex and not as repetitive. So.. If I don't get to review this game through my freelancer job, I won't be experiencing this game anymore than the demo I downloaded.
Thats my beef with it, im guessing that the demo has shown me a good 75% of the game, its fun but not £50 worth of fun. Whilst I can definitly see some people would love nothing more than to spend hours on the game messing about I would get v bored after about 30 minutes [I was bored after the demo ended the 2nd time].

woah, How do you know there are no horror elements in a demo that lasts tops around 15 minutes and shows 4 or 5 cutscenes out of a possible i dunno 100, maybe more.
For me though theres nothing more i wouldwant to do than run round a mall maiming zombies, in cheesey b movie style trying to find out the JOKE of a reason why is all started. The games far from perfect but i cant wait for it.
But if you dont like this game, fair play, im not disputing that this game is amazing and your all sad for not liking it.

Okay, so I have been playing this demo. Everything is what I expected! Except one thing. I have seen that hero can do throws to zombies but I just couldn't do anything. Just stupid punches (pretty worthless) and jumpkick. This game is not mean to be horror at all, more like comedy. I was disappointed when I heard that there isn't ragdoll system but now when I was playing I saw that ragdoll isn't necessary at all. While this demo was just full of killing with not so many weapons (there was many but not compared to that 150+), I know that there is many quests etc. Hell, there's even three kind of enemies (zombies, cult and soldiers).
For me, this is the first real AAA-title.

I must somehow agree with knuckles126.
If the game would be "survival horror", against a city of zombies i would like it alot more, cause thats what i thought it would be.
Im not into that whole dress up like a disco dancer, or a lady and hit zombie with pans stuff. While its "funny" i would rather see the game take the more serious route.
Still a good game, but if you're looking for silent hill/resident evil type stuff it won't do. :)

I think to ever even think that dead rising would be a survival horror from those first ever pics ,where the hero looked like a complete doofus, is just stupid.
From the second i set eyes on this game i knew it wasnt what you guys are talking about. Did you honestly think this was going to be a serious cold blooded survival horror?? the mall (dawn of the Dead) the horrible hero that looked stupid(now looks a little cooler) thousands of zombies on screen and using any weapon to kill them.
I had thoughts when i first saw this off hitting zombies with frying pans decapitating them with kitchen knives etc. I really cant believe people expected a hardcore survival horror out of this.
i mean it was like after the second month of its confirmation that the guy was already talking about setting up innocent people to get eaten so you can take pictures for your pluitzer or whatever its called.
i think the games class, flawed but classic!
Did you honestly think this was going to be a serious cold blooded survival horror??
Not that serious, but the first pics really looked like you had to really be scared of the hundreds of zombies swarming around you. Now the zombies are too easy to kill. The fun is in the repetitive killing of zombies with all kinds of weapons, not in being even a little scared of them and being all girly while trying to dodge the zombies.

Yeh and its blatently true that if you get cought in a group your pretty buggered, it is easy to avoid them if they arent looking though.
have you watched films like return of the living dead? etc dawn of the dead? Zombie holocoust? Zombie flesh eaters?.
In the original ddawn of the dead they pretty much run past tem, and in return of the living dead there is some helarious scenes.
lets face it zombies are funny, they always have been, they are a joke. So slow stumbling around, your only screwed if you get squaded or an unlucky bite from no where.
I loved it in return of the living dead where the guys lik "what are you gonna do?" and he's like "im gonna KNOCK HIS BLOCK OFF" and takes the zombies head of with the baseball bat.
anyway i love zombie films.....and...im...starting...to ....feeeeel...a....little...peckish....mmmm...mmmm ..mm..BRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAINSSS!

Yup, these are traditional comedy-style zombies, just like in the old zombie movies. This game is so true to those movies, Capcom have nailed it :)
This is not a serious survival horror game like Resident Evil, and I don't know how anyone could've been expecting that. It's all about having fun in creative ways.

@To the guy that asked about throwing zombies, I think thats a skill you get when you level up. You start the demo at level 10 with a bunch of moves already, but in the actual game you start at level 1.

At this stage, reviews really mean nothing to me at all, games are art and art appeals differently to everyone.
A 5 minute gameplay video of a game can usually tell me if I'm going to like the game or not, better than any review can.I was skeptical about Dead Rising at first, but after a couple of story and gameplay videos I begun to see how this game might have some potential. I'm pretty hyped about it now, that I've played the demo, and no 7.5 review by someone whom I don't even know is going to change that.

Same with games. People telling me and reviews that it was completely average, then why do i play it for longer and more than these so called amazing games??
i played it and it blew me away, the game ive dreamed off from around the age of 15!
CLASSIC!

You just want to beat the crap out from hopeless zombies! But that's okay, I like to do that too. I have never watched ANY zombie movies (except Resident Evil 1-2) but I have always liked this whole "yarrr, you stupid zombies, die by my chainsaw!" thing. Also the black humor, of course. I just love to put those little robotmasks on zombies. I actually pity them when they are just walking there, don't know where the hell they are going etc.

hahaha lol! yup, zombies are legendary.
While it is a bit repetitive, most games are. Think of a FPS, it's RT RT RT RT RT LT RT RT RT RT RT LT RT RT.

Mario - Hold b, AAAAAAAAAA
Any racing game - Gas, brake, Gas, brake, gas, brake
FPS - Fire, Move, Reload, Fire, Move, Throw Grenade, Reload, Fire, Move, Reload
Every game is repetive at it's core.

That's why I don't play FPSs either. :P I "can" play games with somewhat repetitive gameplay, if the story is interesting and there is some change of pace here and there in the game. I'm not sure but I bet Dead Rising doesn't have any minigames (it's just smashing X all the time from here to eternity) and the story seems like it's straight from a D-class movie.
And FPSs are repetitive in that way that you just have to move around and shoot, but there are things that can make it fun. Throw in a bit of horror (F.E.A.R for example) and strategy, and the game doesn't feel that repetitive anymore. They could've made Dead Rising a bit less repetitive too with different kinds of things. Maybe they should've had two attack buttons, and for both buttons there would've been a quick attack and a slow but more powerful attack which is unleashed by holding down the button. And maybe a bit more combo centric gameplay. Those would've helped a lot. And maybe have the zombies drop stuff (money? a new leather jacket that improves your defense?). That would've made killing the zombies worthwile. Now you just kill them because they are getting in your way. They could've made different kind of zombies, now the game has like what? Three different kind of enemies? Think of an hack 'n slash with just spiders, rats and cockroaches.
With Dead Rising the problem isn't the fact that it's repetitive at its core. The problem is that it isn't repetitive just at its core, but that it really is repetitive. You don't need skills to play the game(like you do in racing games and even in Mario). You just pick up the controller and start pressing X.

Did you play god of war by any chance? or resident evil 4?

Hey well if you don't like it, whatever anyone says wouln't change your mind.
But, a couple points. The story of Dead Rising is meant to be like a B-class movie, like most zombie movies are. Zombies do drop items for time to time, particularly the police zombies who will drop handguns and nightsticks. I believe the variety is meant to stem from the amount of weapons available throughtout the mall. Also, you fight many humans as well as zombies throughout the game.
Did you play god of war by any chance? or resident evil 4?
Yes I did. Why'd you ask? I don't actually think GoW is as good as it's hyped to be, but it was still a great game. And I'm such a wuz that RE4 was almost too scary for me to play it (I just can't play Silent Hills, they are way too disturbing). So DR not being even a little scary is bad, because I don't need much to be scared.

Well, based on every cut scene I've seen, they're not doing a good job in making it a funny B-class plot (read: a plot so bad that it's funny), like for example is in Bad Taste. Now that one had some hilarious stuff.

bad taste was a classic movie!
The original dawn of the dead wasnt supposed to be entirely funny the pltot was obviousley still a horror , there was just funny things that happened in the film.
Eg take dead rising, serious cut scenes, but then i can go dress up in kids clothes that are too small (YUCK) and put a horses head on my character! then walk through a door and watch some ex cons brutally smash an old mans head in with a baseball bat! THATS PURE B MOVIE!!!

God Of War wasn't hyped that much at all actually. There was no huge OMG GOD OF WAR hype before it came out. I think it surpassed what everyone thought it would do because no one thought it would actually be that spectactular. Dead Risings gameplay represents more of the funny B class movie like comedy than its cut scenes do. When you watch the cut scenes you have to notice that its totaly mocking all the other horror like movies in terms of dialouge and what happens and thats where the comedy lays.

Bad taste is a great movie, but if we're talking zombies Peter Jackson's Braindead (Dead Alive in US) takes the top spot in my opinion, I can't believe its by the same guy that made Lord of the Rings
Back on Topic
I can see how people might think that Dead Rising is repetitive, but this is only the demo. Now consider this, in the full game, besides killing zombies, you will have to take pictures of them, explore the cases, help other survivors and there are even boss fights. If you watch the video of the Hardware Store (it was posted somewhere before) the guy playing the game actually says that the point of the game are the missions and that you will want to avoid the zombies as much as you can.
They could've made Dead Rising a bit less repetitive too with different kinds of things. Maybe they should've had two attack buttons, and for both buttons there would've been a quick attack and a slow but more powerful attack which is unleashed by holding down the button.
Funny thing you should say that, because in Dead Rising you actually do have to hold down X in order to perform a different attack with a weapon.
