One of the issues with all the new motion controls for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii has been how much space players will need while they move, swing, waggle and jump. Now we learn some of the space and placement requirements to give gamers the optimal experience with the PS Move.
The news comes as part of a developer chat (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/08/19/live-chat-playstation-move-and-stereoscopic-3d/) with the creators of the PS Move launch game, Sports Champions. In the chat, Colin O'Hara from Zindagi Games says, "In our experience developing Sports Champions, we found that standing around 2.5 meters (roughly 8ft) was best. It's definitely tolerant outside of that range, but that is what we found to work the best."
They also recommend that the PS Eye be at or around shoulder level even though "the system is tolerant of different heights." Sports Champions will include a feature that allows users to calibrate their setup based on the camera's location.
Other news about Sports Champions from the chat reveals that while two Move controllers enhances some of events in the game such as Gladiator Duel, Beach Volleyball and Archery, they aren't required. The games will also function with just one Move controller. Zindagi is also planning to launch DLC for Sports Champions sometime in the future.

Sweet. We've seen people standing much closer and things were working great. Looks like you can play this quite a lot further back than I thought.
That's good to hear because that's about how far I'll be away from the camera/tv.

Mmm i don't have 8 feet.
It still works closer. Look at any PS Move demonstration so far and they've been much much closer.

nice, as long as it still works "fine" positioned within that 8 feet distance, im happy
My actual distance will be like 5ft... so all should be well.

Dude... Seriously, Substance?
This means that FURTHER than 8 feet, and the ball may be too small in camera to show up properly. People use the thing ALMOST RIGHT UP TO THE SCREEN and as long as it's on cam, it works.
You are trying WAY too hard.

I think he is. The OP's "...." can be read in multiple manners. He could be saying that this statement by the company is not needed since most players wont be standing more than even 5 feet from their tv so there wont be an issue. However, the "..." can make the OP's post almost seem like a trolling post. If read in that way, the "..." implies that the OP is disgusted/shocked that Sony would create a product that cannot work at it's best capabilities unless the player is standing 8 feet away from the PS eye and given that most people don't have 8 feet to spare for their PS eye, the OP could be saying that Sony failed.
It all depends on translation of the initial post. It could be read in a negative light, or it could be read in a positive light. I merely think bob read it in a negative light. Until the OP states what he means, we wont really know for sure.
On topic though, that's pretty good news. As others have said, we know the controller works even closer than that, so that's amazing. I didn't expect that the move controller could still function well at 8 feet away, much less function BEST at 8 feet. That's some good quality product created by Sony right there.

What I mean is that bob was stating that the OP is spreading FUD. FUD is, in my interpretation, wrong information. Obviously the OP isn't spreading anything of the sort as this stuff came straight from the dev. I wasn't speaking in relation to any type of "translation" of the info.

I think this is a great explanation, I think with Substances past post history the FUD comment was refering to the "........." in a negative way. Sub should have at least said something after posting the news. Way to many people post news and have nothing to say about it. Was the gun jumped on what his opionion might have really been? Sure! However, that too was my first thought when I read his thoughts on the matter. He has never really been pro move or sony. Not that that is a bad thing, but probably lead to the jump in the first place. Again, I would have asked him what the "....." ment first, but still doesn't look good either way.
As for the news. This is perfect. Well done sony. They have made it ideal for most peoples places in this world. I could play up to an including 20 feet from my TV, but my couch is about 8 feet away leaving me to play anywhere 8 feet or closer depending if I stand up or sit down.
EDIT: Seeing fears post above - Yes FUD was the wrong word, as its not wrong information, should have just left it as a trolling type thing as he first started. Again not that I am say his ..... is trolling...anyway read obove for explanation lol

I read the first post. People are acting like you need to be AT LEAST 8 feet. They're saying it works well UP to 8 feet. Big difference. The first means people with small rooms can't use it.
Given his history here, I would have taken it he was suggesting the first, as someone already brought up ("I don't have 8 feet")
If he didn't, I apologize. I'm only basing this on his MO. And the "..." Considering his normal posting routine and his sig and everything he's ever said in Move threads, I don't think my way of thinking is THAT far off. And the FUD would be the idea that you can only use it if you have 8 feet to spare.
Maybe do more discussing and less accusing..? That's one of the main problems with this place, and it doesn't ever seem to get better. People are so accusatory, and this is a pretty good example of the problem. Would it have been so hard to just debate the info instead of just jumping to conclusions and accusing someone of trolling? Know what I mean?
As far as the FUD goes, I don't see where it says you can only use it at 8 feet. He's just relaying info from a dev. I guess it's one of things the OP does leave for chance. Discussion would have been better than accusations though.
Great, that's perfect if I move my Coffee table up against the couch, which I planned to do, I'm at 8-9' from the TV.

No worries for me as i'm actually 7-9 feets away from the tv.

well if you follow tv guidlines for size, your ment to sit 4X the tv's size away from it. so 8ft would fall roughly into that ballpark, for a 32" plus tv.
EDIT: scratch that, just did the maths, no it wouldnt. its less, but meh.
Will be a bit of a problem for me, i measured it found that 1.7 Meter is the exact space from my couch to the screen.
To be honest, the OP is being very clever with the whole "just a messenger" act and clearly is trying to make out like you need 8 feet of space in front of your TV. I'll be playing 6-8 feet away anyway so don't care.

How is it the OP's point? It isn't,... he wrote "..."
He posted this, intentions aside, because it is news.
besides, the article says "works best" not, ONLY works, or is crap everywhere else...
this sort of thing needs to calm down on these forums... this accusatory tone taken whenever someone posts an article.

Really dont see why people are jumping to conclusions... Ive posted plenty of articles before and havent commented on them... including kinect ones...Im not anti-Move or sony the way some of you believe. i did purchase my ps3s before i even bought a 360. Some things I prefer more than others.. Sure i prefer Kinect over move but it doesnt mean i dont like move at all. I just prefer Kinect for my own reasons... I figured people would discuss the article... not the reason I posted it....

I think the only problem I am going to have with move is constantly having to move the camera for me (6 ft 2) to fit in my son who is 4. On every game. I doubt we will be able to play at the same time unless I sit down. Which knowing him he will be dragging me to stand up lol

From what I understand it scans the wingspan of the player before playing (measures their height/ arm length) so it shouldn't have trouble reading the two of you, despite your distinct difference in size and if you stand back at least eight feet I'm sure it will pick you both up...

As long as it works from closer distances it should be fine but it's funny both soon to be released 'motion controllers' camera tech requires some distance.

So I have to stand in the garden?
Will rain affect it?
It works right up to the camera, no need to worry guise.

Well, since they are camera tech relying on being able to SEE you (or the Move controller) then distance is pretty self explanatory. I'm pretty sure if you can see your whole body in the camera, you will be fine. I can stand about 5ft away from my camera (situated on top of my TV, about shoulder height) and it can see from my head down to my toes. I'm 5'9', so I might have it easier than taller gents, but if I can do that 5ft away, I would say 8ft distance is about the max you'd have to be back to get your whole body in view.
Also, with the Move you don't need to have your whole body in view, just your upper body really. With Kinect it would be more crucial to be further back to get your whole body in. Either way, I am pretty sure you will be fine with half of that 8ft requirement. Most Move demo stands had people standing no further than 5ft away.
Yeah I agree, my post wasn't doubting how it'd work, it's been shown working so there's no concerns.
I don't see how this is different than any other motion controls, all of them require require some distance to work properly. All of them (Wii sensor bar, Move, Kinect) have a horizontal/vertical range that they can detect. Ever played Metroid:Corruption and moved the Wiimote too far to the left or right? Your cross-hairs will freeze at the edge of the screen until the sensor bar picks the controller back up. Out of the three Kinect will require the most room since it needs to track your whole body( at least in most of the launch titles)

I've done some calculations and I've got about 11ft. I've got 6ft either side of my TV too. If I move the coffee tables I should have plenty of room for some of the more wacky party games (that I'll try to avoid playing!).
Good to hear. That would be a bizarre deformity.
Priceless. Rep+ LOL. These threads need a good laugh because they are so boring. But yeah. My setup is 5 feet away. But I think for my uses as using it for shooters, I can be a lot closer. Keep in mind that 2 player games will need even more space to prevent people from hitting eachother. Just makes sense. For shooters, you keep things nice and close. Not much space needed to track.

Outside that range... Does that mean FURTHER or CLOSER? I highly doubt it means both (IE a sweetspot) I think it means FURTHER (because the ball would keep getting smaller on camera. It wasn't clear about WHICH DIRECTION it would more likely have a problem in. I'm thinking it means it has a problem going further.
So, yeah, I read the quoted portion. And the "..." And every post Sub-Stance has ever made about move.
