Kinect delay ruins experience
PlayStation arguably brought augmented reality into the home, with the PS2's EyeToy games getting further refined into EyePet: Move Edition, Start the Party! and more on PlayStation Move. Now Dana Jan, director at PlayStation masters Ready at Dawn, has spoken out about how Move has the edge in augmented reality gaming.
Expressing concern for the delay in Kinect's response time, Jan said:
I think the latency and how long it takes for the system to interpret the video footage, process it, generate the skeleton for your character, and then kick it back out is too long. It's like 1/8 of a second. I don't think you can control any game well with that kind of delay.
That's without factoring in one of the most important aspects of Move's augmented reality features: the ability to turn a handheld controller into a variety of objects. Anyone who's played EyePet or Start the Party! can testify to the effectiveness of this method, a definite advantage over Kinect's controller-free gaming.

I saw demos at an expo here in Vienna, and all my love for Sony aside, on a technical level, I did notice the lag in the games.
0 buttons + lag = nice one microsoft
haha :)

I don't know but I still think Augmented Reality with a Depth Cam is going to be pretty cool

Wow..
Is it really that bad though?
It does, alot of the launch games are playing around this lag ultimately dumbing down the experience.
The beauty of Start The Party is how even in fast motion all the argumented imagery is perfectly 1:1 with what you see on screen. The way the PS3 can whip through image data like that is just crazy.

I've seen that video before, but only now just saw how slow everything is, especially his movements. When you play with Move you don't really think how fast your moving because the game keeps up. Your actually instructed to go faster and faster because the technology can read it all that fast.

yeah that was pretty bad, that would really take you out of the game if you have to punch then wait for your punch to be thrown in the game before you make your next move.

yeah I notice how slow he was moving the 1st time I seen it but after using Move and being able to get really fast and the game still keeping up with your movement this really look slow. but if they can work it out and use this tech in a game where the fast movements isn't really needed they can do some cool stuff. like having you pick small pets up in your hands you know like in EOJ but without the cards.

Playstation dev bashes MS non shocker.
This guy is only expressing his 'concern' as part of a Ghost of Sparta release interview, or because he's intent on grabbing a few headlines as part of a Ghost of Sparta awareness promotion. (The game launched on the same day as his comments were made.)

It all depends, does the infra red camera on the Kinect have a frames per second counter? Because thats the first thing I'd bump unto 60/120fps. Then you also have the internal code trying to interpret what the image is saying and that alone will ultimately slow the entire process down unless you wanna colour your self in 101 tracked dots.

I think we know what both kinect and move does best. To me they are two different things. Move does augmented reality better and kinect tracks your whole body. The whole experience is based on the game and not specs. Augmented reality is cool stuff but kinect isnt about that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and with this dev its no different.

Judging by my experience with Start the Party and PS Move, i can safely say the Move is very very good at doing augmented reality with 0 lag. I want more games like that. I had a major blast with "Start the Party".
Like Sub-stance said though, both have their strong points. Kinect is just different and its use will be different too.
I don't like the look of "Fighters Uncaged" though... it looks boring, i think it's no better than doing a Ty-Bo exercise dvd. It's far from 1:1.

I dont like fighters uncaged myself. Not my type of game but it has more to do with the dev than the tech. I mean look at how the ps move The Fight Lights Out turned out. It all depends. Kinect is very capable of doing augmented reality really well. I have no doubt about that. This tech will see many improvements over time. It doesnt ruin the experience and this dev will be proven wrong.

Start The Party is a fantastic example of how well the Move controller brings augmented reality to your living room.
From the looks of the lag, I'm guessing that connect is really an expensive TV remote. It's best use will be browsing music/dvd library interfaces rather than playing games. It's a shame. We are all gamers and want more unique products to come to the market. Whole body augmentation is going to be a bigger hit with people not interested in hardcore games. The older generation, young families with young kids and casual gamers who won't play for long will benefit form this the most.

Honestly, if you don't mind the fact that there's not enough mini-games in it, the game is a major fun for everybody. My brother begs me to bring the Move and Start the party whenever i go to his place. It's very fun and very recommended ! unless you really hate party type games.

Funny you would say that because to me Uncaged looks like Def Jam: Vendetta & The Fight looks like Def Jam: Icon
and I'm pretty sure the devs for uncaged didn't have time to look at The Fight then go and make a game like it and release it at the same time as them.

Yeah definitly, but sadly, MS will make sure it's the new and hot item to get once released. Marketing can make all the difference in the world because if Sony advertised the Eye Toy correctly, more people would be aware that hands free gaming existed before kinect.

I already have 3 Move controllers and 3 Move games that i really dig. If kinect doesn't offer anything new, i will sell it.

Im well aware that hands free gaming existed before kinect. I never claimed that. The thing is its never been implemented the way it has until now. The way Kinect is integrated with xbox live is kinda cool. You gotta admit that. Its only gonna get better. Once devs get the hang of both move and kinect we will see even more innovative stuff were seeing now... as for my sig i really dont see how it bothers anyone. Ive been for kinect since the beginning. I just think the tech is really something and its good for the industry.

The two controllers are different, we know that, and they both have different strengths.
The key to them being successful is making games which play to those strengths. Sports Champions is a decent oppertunity for Move to flex its muscles but we want PROPER games built for Move to show what it really can do, and likewise for Kinect. It will be interesting to see when/ if these games come to either controller.

Is the lag inherent in the Kinect system or is it on the development level? Anyways, they need to sort out those things before I consider it.

Start The Part is a fantastic game, just not much to do unless your in a party. TV SuperStars should be avoided.
Is it really that bad though?
A user example of the very real latency issue is the tech radar reviewer swinging a full punch, finishing the swing before his on screen character even started the swing.
Also good luck if your background is not a plain wall.

Here on Germany there was a TV Show called Germany vs. Turkey. Some B-Prominent fights in different games against each other. They had a Kinect game too and men was that broken. Was there ever any doubt about Moves superiority? I think it was pretty obvious when MS had to fake half of it's Kinect conference with footage and not gameplay. What is really bugging me about it is that people are shrugging it off as "no big deal" that they faked it. I remember a certain company being flamed like crazy around 2005 for showing just concept footage of software. Care to guess who? I think with user reviews/regular reviews on software people are going to wake up and realize...wow....even with all this super duper marketing, it is still a crappy product.

Bashfest? I'm just stating the facts that I have seen. Why is it that when Sony released concept footage at E3 2k5, they were royally flamed, but when MS fakes ON STAGE gameplay, nobody in the media says a peep? Move is a superior product from what I have seen so far. No lag versus the 1/8 second you see in the footage above. Lag like that is not good for any game. When people hype Kinect, it's almost like their hyping the marketing power of Microsoft, and not what the product actually does, or doesn't do.

So a fellow can't post his opinion....in a move section thread...that has something to do with Kinect within it? LOL Whatever man. I'm not being some off the wall fanboy, I am posting things that have actually happened/I have seen with my own eyes. The lag is there. Their faked conference is there for everyone to see. I consider it your opinion. The main point of this thread is that Move is an all around better motion experience than Kinect. With that I can agree and give my reasons why.
I think it is safe to say all of the following.
Move has a better response time than Kinect
Move is more accurate than Kinect
Move is much better for AR than Kinect
Move is more versatile owing to the fact that it has a camera AND controllers.
Move has way more games available which take advantage of it than kinect does.
You get set up with Move for less than £40. With Kinect you have to pay £125.
Move is cheaper, more entertaining, faster and more accurate.
Simple really.

You don't have to... there are already about 30-40 of them... all filled with the same opinions.
What my point is, is that there is a difference between saying:

Get the drift? You can have a negative opinion... but if your opinion comes across as inflammatory, fanboy drivel, I will probably can it.

i think we all knew Kinect wasnt going to be as good as the Move, games need buttons especially "hardcore" games, tell me how a game like Halo on 360 would work with no buttons, yeah it wouldnt. good luck turning around with no joystick. about the lag, PS3 has this amazing thing called the Cell processor which allows for a lot more calculations in a short amount of time hence no lag on 1 on 1 movements, Kinect will become like the wii with a bunch of kid games that eventually fades out with the "real" gaming crowd. not to mention the PS3 Eye can already do everything the Kinect does, sense motion and sound, Move FTW
one more thing it will be very very hard to do Kinect in first person view because you will need to see how the game character is reacting to your movements

Move has way more games available which take advantage of it than kinect does.
so thats a no then.
so thats a no then.
Holy ****. That is actually just a quick list of move compatible games. It's not even close to the full list.

There is no need to try to pick a fight over a fact. The Kinect has 15 games on market now vs the Moves 21 games. You can play more titles with the move as of now, it is a fact.
I agree with the augmented reality comment at the OP but at the same token that dance game for the kinect looks like that will play well. It is as I thought. IMO, Eventually the kinect will be limited in the type of interaction you will deal with.

Notice how the Kinect list is padded with Dance Central 2 and Kate and Milo lol. Alot of them are TBA so we might not even see all of them.
Move is an amazingly accurate product. I cannot stress enough how accurate it is. When SONY said 1:1 they meant it.

There is no need to try to pick a fight over a fact. who's picking a fight? one has been out a few months, the other a week. should we be surprised if one has more games available for it?

Move does not have WAY MORE GAMES AVAILABLE FOR IT. and i'm surprised that you would consider 21 way more than 15. its 6 by my counting, NOT WAY MORE. and who's arguing that you cant play more Move games as of now, not me.
i could care less who has the MORE games as i own both, but i find it sad that people need to feel good about themselves because there system of choice has WAY MORE GAMES than the other.
bought Dance Central and Kinectimals to name but 2, and i guess (in the context of what your talking about) they are WAY BETTER than singstar/dance and eyepet.
