David Carey, the vice president of technical intelligence at TechInsights, has told IncGamers that his preliminary estimate for the material cost of the $99 USD PlayStation Move bundle is around $38.

The company recently did a full 'teardown' analysis of the Microsoft Kinect device, estimating its material cost to be $56 USD. While the company had also stripped down the Move, it had not yet estimated a bill of materials (BOM) value.

Carey suggests the Move Wand and Eye combo account for $34 USD of the bundle cost, with accessories like the packaging, demo CD and other extras estimated at around $4 USD extra. As a caveat to these figures, he states "I would like to stress that these BOM costs are estimates, but accurate estimates based on our extensive database of analysis and part costs history, based on years and years of prior knowledge."

TechInsights' hardware BOM cost estimates assume high-volume scaled manufacturing and are preliminary at this stage for the PlayStation Move. The numbers are subject to change pending a full teardown investigation.

That's a pretty good profit for them. Especially since Sony didn't seem to pay all that much for advertising. Is there any concrete info stating how much they paid for advertising?

I'm guessing it might be less than $38 even...because isn't Sony actually making the peripherals? Also, they mentioned they didn't know the bill of materials value...
