View Full Version : Xbox 'Doesn't Carry Anywhere Near as Much Sway' as Sony, says EA CEO
In our recent interview with EA boss John Riccitiello, we asked the executive what he thought this meant with regards to Sony and Microsoft. Did Microsoft blow its lead, or has Sony just been coming on too strong? It's not really either of those, says Riccitiello.
"I don’t think it’s either of those things. Honestly, I think that Microsoft has done great work the last couple of years, and they’ve made a lot of smart moves: hitting pricing when they needed to, the right combination of hitting price points and disk drive sizes that allow them to hit price points that matter, and they’ve done a great job with Xbox Live. At the same time, the Xbox brand, the Microsoft brand, doesn’t carry anywhere near as much sway as the Sony and PlayStation brand do outside the United States, and so I think the reality is the international marketplace is just so important and it’s a natural advantage that no matter how good Microsoft is at growing their business, Sony has an almost-impossible-to-supersede head start," he told us.
Riccitiello continued, "In the last couple of years, Sony’s sharpened their marketing message, you know, 'the platform with everything.' They’ve actually gotten past simply Home as an online connected system for them. While I’m not sure that one would compare them in depth and breadth and features and support to what you have at Xbox Live, it’s good now."
Ultimately, EA has been happy with the performance of both platforms, and of course as a third-party publisher, the company wants all the platforms to succeed to give them a larger base to sell games to.

Duh. I'm not disputing that. But its funny how we always see these type of threads shortly after the NPD reports come out.
Brand awareness, its always been the case.
Although the longer MS stick around the less likely this will be the case.
I wouldnt expect in 5 years time to be any difference in people perception in term sof brand recognition.
@rad, this aint nothing, the ones about the cell they had the other day were hilarious. It was like being transported back in time to 2006.

there is nothing more "self assurance" about this then there is a 360 fan posting NPD data...

Yea it's totally messed up that the gaming journalism community asks developers questions about consoles and their importance in the market after NDP numbers come out, huh?

Are EA a developer or just a publisher? Either way, that guy isn't a dev, he's a professional suit who would say black was white if it were good for whichever business he's currently running at the time. You do devs a disservice also, they're generally a little smarter than your average joe who carries bricks up and down a ladder for a living, demonstrable by the way they don't have to carry bricks up and down a ladder for a living ;)
And yeah, we all know the Sony/PS brand is stronger, not that they've leveraged it very well this gen. From overpriced TVs, to exploding batteries, to DRM root kits, to the god-awful PSP Go, Sony are seemingly systematically weakening their own brand, and that's without the likes of Apple's iPod taking their Walkman's dinner money.
The MS brand will never be a particularly strong one, people love to hate them because they symbolise evil corporate greed. Actually ask them why though and I doubt many could give a decent reason, but it's just kind of the done thing.

Whats up with journalism nowadays? The title of that makes it so obvious what he was trying to do. IMO the title should be EA is happy with the performance of both platforms .

I couldn't agree more. Sony just has that swagger. They've had it since 1995 and have been delivering the best gaming experiences for over a decade now. It's not a shock that they're the worldwide leader.
Microsoft really needs to focus on the rest of the world outside of NA next generation or Sony might just claim their throne back.

And the 360 outselling the PS3 in NA is something we already know as well...yet that is ok?...this is just as valid a "news" topic as NPD data...its not all that often that a major publisher makes any sort of statements like this...
I mean...would it be news worthy for me to post media create hardware numbers in the 360 section every week/month? So we can discuss the "factual news" of the 360 getting outsold?...
No...of course not, it would be NEWS if the 360 outsold the PS3 in JPN...or the PS3 outsold the 360 in NA...
There would be a different tone in this thread if the title was "PS3 does not carry anywhere near as much sway as Microsoft" and it was posted in the 360 section...

The name would imply it's a pro-PS3 forum, but it really seems about 60%/40% for Pro PS3 posts to Pro 360 posts, respectively. I'd say it's more of a general gaming forum than a PS3 forum.

Which is why I don't understand why it's called PS3 forums..?? Strange stuff. Anywho, great tidbit of article. I think it's funny how people scream reassurance thread, but have no qualms about going into sales threads and causing trouble. If it's positive news, it's bashed by them. If it's negative news it's harped on for about a week straight by the same group. They never seem to let up. :lol: Hilarity ensues. So Sony is a better brand outside of the US. We all know it and often discuss it.

I remember a time when people were not allowed to go into a Pro PS3 article and say things like "in before pro 360 crowd bash it", or "how many posts until the 360 defense force backlash". Personally I think it should be the same for the pro360 side with comments like "pat yourself on the back sony owners" or "now he feels better about his purchase" type posts. In my opinion it is nothing but baiting either way.
Everyone knows the truth behind the article, but it could have been written better.
I can agree with the title, I actually went out and bought some sway to test it, the PS3 was able to carry up to 1.7kg of sway where as my 360 could only carry 1.1kg, science people!!!

Yep. Exactly. We have the same people coming into this thread to say "it's a self reassurance thread" that are always telling people not to mention worldwide sales in NPD threads. Some hypocrisy going on. This is a thread about Worldwide sales, and now we have those certain people trying to bring NPD into this.

Let them get bent out of shape. I could care less about sales but if i did and i was as big of a 360 fan as some of these people i'd be on edge too that my console is about to blow a year head start lead. :lol:
