Reputation System Introduction

vBulletin's user reputation system provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on the forums can add reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts.

User reputations allow the users in your community to tell vBulletin which users are quality and which users are not. And in response to user feedback, vBulletin has the ability to label and reward users for the quality of their posts, as is indicated by their reputation.

Your Reputation points total is displayed in your UserCp (http://www.ps3forums.com/usercp.php).

Reputation Power

Your Reputation Power is the number of points you give when you rep someone else, and is calculated as follows;

Your Reputation Power is;

• One point for every 600 posts you have made.
• One point for every 400 points of reputation you have.
• One point for each 50 days you have been a member.

For a rep to count you must have at least 10 points, and have made at least 10 posts.

You can give a maximum of 3 reputation "hits" per 24 hour period, and must rep at least 10 different people before you can rep the same person again (Administrators are exempt from these two limits).

A number oflight blue & dark blue pips are used to show other users your reputation level. The first 3 pips are light blue, the next 3 are dark blue then the next 3 are gold and then finally 1 purple = 3 light blue + 3 dark blue + 3 gold.

Giving Rep

The colored pips you see below avatars are part of a feature on the forums that allows you to rate members for their posts. Everyone starts off with 10 reputation points by default, and then other members can add to or subtract from your points by clicking the reputation icon shown in your posts. To see how many points you have, and also any comments people have left, check your User CP. If you haven't had any ratings yet, nothing will be shown, but if you have you'll see icons like these:

The amount of points you give or take from a member when rating them is known as your "reputation-altering power."

Finally, your reputation has no effect on your activities on the forums, so don't take it seriously.

Rating Pip Points Breakdown

Each pip in it's color group has a set value.

0-49 - 1 Light Blue pip
50-99 - 2 Light Blue pips
100-149 - 3 Light Blue pips
150-399 - 3 Light Blue pips + 1 Dark Blue pip
400-649 - 3 Light Blue pips + 2 Dark Blue pips
650-899 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips
900-1399 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips + 1 Gold pip
1400-1899 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips + 2 Gold pips
1900-2399 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips + 3 Gold pips
2400 - 1 Purple pipThe ranks work as follows:

3 Light Blue pips: 50 rep each
3 Dark Blue pips: 250 rep each
3 Gold Pips: 500 rep each

A Purple commendation pip means = all 9 pips unlocked (or 2400 rep)

Where exactly in the userCP does it show this?

• 0 - User is an unknown quantity at this point
• 100 - 2 dk green blips
• 10 - User is on a distinguished road
• 50 - User will become famous soon enough
• 150 - User has a spectacular aura about

Also whats with going from 0 to 100 then back to 10 50 and so on?

I really like this idea of reputation. Everyone should be able to see how many reputation points each member has. Is that possible?

Well you can sort of tell by holding your mouse over the green square under their username, it says their "title" and you can come to this post and see about how many they have lol! Kind of complicated I think :P

I get it, so Reputation points really has nothing to do with reputation power.

Rep points advance you in that little green pip thing and shows how good a poster you are while the Reputation power is more along the lines of how how you have been around.

The concept is pretty cool.

Also, it seems that being part of a public group (mod, SMC DS) gives you one Reputation power too...

I think its a good idea to a point. I would never do this and hopefully no one else would, but if someone has a grudge or just wants to be immature, they could rate other users badly. Or if users show favoritism towards others, it'll be unfair to the other users.

Don't mean to be negative, just something I thought of.

Mods and Admins could probably give your rep points back if you tell them someone did it for revenge, etc.

Apparently, you (razorblade) are on a distinguished road!

(You can only see your own phrase thing in your user profile.)

I have a question: I currently have 6 reputation things in my user CP, yet only one of them counts, and that one gave me... 10 Rep. points. Does that mean that 5 of them were given to me by users with posts under 1000 (which means they have no rep. power)?

I think there should be a limit with this Rep Power. I mean that something like +20 rep (this is just example) would be the highest. Some people could see this as a competition, who has more Rep Power etc.

Panda Bear Shenyu
08-16-2006, 08:22
There really isn't any competition in rep power. Those who came first and have more posts naturally have more rep. power.

I don't think that's entirely true. Sure you get rep. points for a certain amount of post, points and days for being a forum member. Still, people can give or take points from you in relation to the quality of your posting skills.

I think the limit for the first rep power should be 100. That way you don't have people just making accounts to rep themselves.

Rep power is how great you can add to someone elses rep. Currently Morpheus...possibly Rebon, is the only one who can give 10 rep points.

I think all Mods should have at least a 10 point rep just because we hold a higher expectation for well written and intelligent posting.

As far as gaining rep is concerned, I agree with LP Chris that it would most likely take a lifetime to get a golden rep status.

08-18-2006, 20:35
Should I have a Rep Power of 1 and not 0? Unless I read the explanation wrong, anyone who's been here for a year should have 1 point of Rep Power.

VincentProxy
08-21-2006, 01:40
I find the giving rep system a bit stupid. Because you give away your rep to give people rep that basically means you better not rep people if you want good rep. also that would mean if you even want to get 2000 rep 200 people would have to give you ALL their rep meaning they cant rep anyone else.(assuming rep gives 1 rep per rep)...just saying theres never going to be enough for even 10 people to get near 2000 rep with how the system works.

There are about 5000 members on this forum, not all active but lets say they are. And all give rep to a certain person until that person has exactly 2000 rep and then goes to the next person.

5000/200(again assuming rep gives only 1 rep per rep)...Only 25 people can get 2000 rep and thats assuming all 5000 users are active and actually do rep.

I suggest making it so you dont loose your rep when repping people...just a thought.

Panda Bear Shenyu
08-21-2006, 02:03
... you don't. The amount of rep points that you give out depends on how much rep power you have. For example, if I rep someone, their rep point will either go up or go down 2 points because I have two rep power.

No matter how many times I give reps, my rep power never decreases...

However, since you don't have 1000 posts, you have 0 rep, so your reps have no significance on a user's rep point count at this point. That is why I think people should have rep power when they have over 100 posts since that would make it much more fair for the majority of the forum.

VincentProxy
08-21-2006, 02:05
Ooooo now I get it, I was confused between that, guess it will take quite some time to get some rep power for me heh.

What if somebody gives you bad rep just for "fun" or something like that?

Because one thing is the reputation you got, and the other is your reputaion power.
Look, when you are reped, you get the same amount of Rep Power from the one that reped you. All the reps sum in one, and they make your reputation poins (the ones you were given)
The 10 below my name is the amount of rep i will give to an user once i rep him.

I think what you do is go to UserCP and once you are in there it will have stuff open that says "Last Reputation Received" If the person commented, it will say his or her name ONLY if they have inserted it there for your knowledge. (I believe this to be true) Also, the comment will be displayed (With the name if they input it)

Your total Reputation Points will be displayed on the upper right corner of the "Last Reputation Received" Box. (It will say (Number) Point(s) Total) (For example, mine reads "17 point(s) total")

If you still are having problems in this repping business, you may want to PM (Send Personal Message) a Moderator or Admin. Such as The_One, Morpheus, Rebon, and so on.. i(Color coded names' meanings are displayed on the bottom of the forum's home page)Admin = red; Super moderators = Green; Senior Council Members = Blue, Design Squad = Purple, Techinal staff = Orange (I think); Members = Grey; and Users waiting for confirmation emails = light blueish grey (lol). (Panda Bear Shenyu and The_One are very helpful in my opinion)

Glad to help if I have helped at all.

Hmm... let me check to see if I can close and re open it in a different place...; maybe you have to find where the reputation received box is located in UserCP... Just a moment... Hmm... I cannot find anywhere you can manually open the "Latest Reputation Received", it has always been up there when I go to UserCP since I have gotten a reputation (Mind you, I have only received one rep+)

Let me try to evaluate some explainations..
If you received many of these reputations long ago, maybe the comments have been deleted from your UserCP.
Perhaps none of these reputees ever commented on why they repped you, in this case you might have not gotten any notice? (Doubt that is the problem..)
Maybe the box is minimized, if you can see a long rectangle under the Threads box, that says "Latest Reputation Received", and it has the arrow on the right side of it pointing down, then simply click that arrow to reveal information.

I do believe that it is always shown under Subscribed Thread, and in detail of it tells in which thread you were repped, the date of repping, and the comment (if any).

Sorry if none of this helped. I am as we all are, (I hope) a human being :/ (In that, I do not know the answers to all questions :(... Yes it is surprising, but I really don't :P)

P.S. - If this problem indeed does persist, I highly recommend you to Personal Message an Admin, Moderator, or Senior Council Member. (The_One seems to reply quite fast :P)

King.Kong, I just checked and you have no reps.
Are you sure someone repped you?:???:

EDIT:

Rep Power and Reputation are two completely different things King.Kong.
Rep Power is the amount of reps someone will receive if you rep them.
eg. If I rep you, you will have 14 reputation.

Reputation is what you get when someone reps you.

your total rep points will go up by ten but your rep power will not.
REMEMBER REP POINTS=/=REP POWER

So how does your Rep power go up ?

I understand about everyone giving each other Rep Points but how does your Rep Power change ?

And where the heck are the green pips ??

I mean above my av there is one blue pip. But unless im color blind i cant see any green pips ?

Now as far as i can make out your Rep Power is just down to the time you've been a member yet how have some that have been here a short time got higher rep power than thos that have been here a long time. I guess its not just odwn to time, So what else effects your Rep Power if Rep Points dont ?

Well Goldfiinger, I think it works like this:

You get one rep power for...
Every year you have been here.
Every 1000 posts you have.
And every 100 rep points you get. (or another pip)

Although that doesn't work.. as I have 14 rep power..
and I have not been here a year yet, I have 300 rep points, and 3000 posts.
So by my explanation I should only have 6 rep power. I am confused lol.

EDIT:
Oh and the green pips are on the default vbulletin template.
We have blues one on this skin, but on the default vb skin they are green.

Ok so the green pips are the blue ones k cleared that up.

Still seems confusing on whole it goes up, as you say it doesnt add up right?

My bet is no one can explain it in full ;)

I'll donate 100 points plus rep the first person who can explain how all the rep power gets dished out. :)

Your rep power increase ever time you reach 50 points.....

100 points = 2 rep power

50 = 1

etc..

Plus you get extra power, once your reach a ammount of posts, or days of being a member... etc

So why am i on ten rep power then when my rep points are only 62. Where did my other nine RPower come from. Maybe another one for being here for over a year. So that still leaves eight. 8 for having 1500 posts so that would mean someone with 3000 should have at least 16 Rep power well thats not true because theres plenty of people with 3000 posts without 16 rep power...

Again can some explain how it works with proven maths behind it...

I believe it works like this, one point to start off with, a point for every 500 posts, a points for every 100 days being a member and a point for every 50 rep points you have. Atleast thats what Morpheus says, it doesn't work with me i should have 9.

User Reputation

This section contains many settings that dictate how users of your forum are able to affect each other's reputation score.
Enable User Reputation system
This is the global switch for the reputation system. If you disable this, users will not be able to rate each other nor will their scores be visible.
Default Reputation
This is the reputation score that new users will start out with.
Number of Reputation Levels to Display
When a user enters their User CP, they will see a list of their most recent reputation ratings. This affects how many of the latest ratings to display.
Administrator's Reputation Power
If you wish to have administrator's wield a certain reputation power independent of their calculated score, enter it here. Otherwise, set this to 0 and they will use the same calculations as everyone else.
Register Date Factor
The number of reputation points that a user is able to give or take is dependant on several factors, with the length they have been registered as one of them. A user's power is first initialized at 1 and then this factor and the factors that follow are used to increase it. For example if you set this to 365, every 365 days that the user has been a member of your forum, they would gain one point. So if they have been a member for five years, they would gain 5 points of power for a total of 6.
Post Count Factor
The amount of posts that a user has can also affect their reputation power. Set this to number of posts that you want to award one point for. For example, set this to 50 and for a user with 500 posts, they would gain 10 points of power.
Reputation Point Factor
The users current reputation score can also affect their reputation power. Set this to 100 and a user with a reputation of 1000 would gain 10 points of reputation power. If you set any of the power factors to 0, that will effectively remove that factor from having an effect on the user's reputation power.
Minimum Post Count
If the reputation system is enabled, anyone will be able to rate a post but only users with a post count above the level you set here will be able to actually give points or take points from another user.
Minimum Reputation Count
As with the post count above, a user must have a reputation above this level to be able to give or take points from another user's score.
Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
This sets how many unique members that a forum user will be able to rate in any 24 hour period. Administrators can rate as many people as they wish.
Reputation User Spread
This setting dictates how many unique members that a user must rate before they are able to rate the same member twice. The goal of this setting is to stop a member from either artificially bumping or dropping a user by repeatedly rating their posts.

Morpheus or another administrator would have to provided the actual calculation values since they are customizable...

Right now I have 6 rep. I have 7 rep in my CPU though. (the 7th rep i got is from the 8th of April). Why isn't it showing up after 8 days?

There are two thing:Rep Power and Rep Points.

Rep power shows how many rep points can you give to other members. You can increase rep power:
• One point for every 500 posts you have made.
• One point for every 100 points of reputation you have.
• One point for every 6 months you have been a member.

so the aim of the game is get rep from the users who have the most rep power?

so for example, if i got rep from loudninja (who has something like 109 rep), i would get 109 points on my CPU? so therefore i would move up a rep value to 17. the same goes with 200, i would move to 19. i dont think anyone has reach 200 yet so...

Or did I receive some +rep for things I did/posted and that isn't showing up in the Control Panel?

edit: Okay, I went up to 13... again, nothing shows up in the control panel. So I don't why / who...

edit2: Somebody repped me for a thread, and now it shows up in the User Control Panel. So my guess is that the way reputation is counted and translated to Rep Power has been altered.

Is it possible for the rep power number to get "stuck"?

I see it gives one point for every 250 points of rep you get. It just seems like I've been at 13 for a long time now, with a lot of rep coming in from members with good rep counts. I haven't actually added it up to see if there's 250+ points in there or not, and this isn't incredibly important but I was just curious if the rep can get stuck.

I got deleted too I just bitched at Morph to give me the rep points I'd lost back. I'm only down about 50 because of it.

Well I think I set a record with getting over 2000 3 weeks to a month. But alas... now it's like 2-4 days between reps. >.>

Well reputation at this point is kinda pointless. There are too many people with massive rep and making others achieve theirs faster.

I made 4 minor changes to the original post. I saved the original in case anything got messed up, and I am still saving it, even though everything went fine.

I changed:

1: yellow and green pips to light blue and dark blue pips.

2: I changed the 5 secondary pips to 6.

3: You can now have 11 total pips where as before you could only have 10.

4: I removed the sentence about getting negative rep from a normal member.

Hey everyone. I've updated the reputation ranks becuase, well, they were maxing out too soon. So there is now a new rank of gold and a new purple commendation . There may be more in the future!

The ranks work as follows:

3 Light Blue pips: 50 rep each
3 Dark Blue pips: 250 rep each
3 Gold Pips: 500 rep each

A Purple commendation pip means = all 9 pips unlocked (or 2400 rep)

400-649 - 3 Light Blue pips + 2 Dark Blue pips

900-1399 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips + 1 Gold pip
1400-1899 - 3 Light Blue pips + 3 Dark Blue pips + 2 Gold pips

I'm hoping that this change will encourage members to post better quality stuff. All I've seen lately is people actually asking for rep, which defeats the whole purpose of the system in the first place. You're meant to work for it, rather than beg for it. On another forum I used to post on, a user would be warned or even banned if they asked for rep. I've earned all my reputation through putting effort into my posts, so maybe it's time we'll see an improvement in the forums general posting.

This is brilliant news, and hopefully another step forward in improving the overall forum experience. I can't believe it's taken this long for rep whoring to be stopped, though, it shouldn't be allowed at all because it completely contradicts the entire system.

You're supposed to earn rep, not beg for it or swap it. I've seen members requesting rep, and in return they'll give rep. I mean, people, what the ****? The sooner this new system comes into effect, the better.

The only way you'll be making rep "better" is by removing it completely. Because people will rep for funny posts, people will rep for cat pics, basically, people will rep anything that they consider worthy.

I know you people are trying to stir **** up so it seems like this place is "progressing", so that it makes you feel good that you've contributed or something, but the cold truth is, that the forums are in better shape than ever. There is humour in this place, which i thought was impossible, there are more civil debates in here then there were back in 2007/late06. Thats what matters, and thats going great.

Umm no your not, looking at the posts you just showed its more like "get that joking crap and keep it in the GCC" mentality. Jokes have many meanings, one of which is to reduce some of conflict and laugh off the fact that little things are exaggerated and hope others see it as well. Sure it can get out of hand but more then likely, the topic at hand as some form of built in "bait" to joke about any way.

The idea I suggested was to give repping ability only to senior members. BUT each rep will count for a lot, 200-500 points in terms of the system now. That way, no one has to moderate each and every rep and it can't be abused because the senior members are members that are trusted and won't abuse the rep for things such as jokes or ridiculous pictures.

It's true that if rep is in the hands of the members it will get abused. So there are two options, either remove rep, or take it away from the general public. The only flaw in my system is if senior members become corrupt and start repping jokes, but if they do that....then there's just no hope in general.

Could I point out 2 threads that clearly show people don't understand what a quality, reppable post is?

http://ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=135757

and

Look through the threads and you'll find plenty of posters that simply state "Cool. Nice Find. +Rep"

This is nothing against either of the thread creators. They found some news on N4G, copy and pasted the link and news story to let other see. Thats fine.

But there isn't anything "quality" about the post. It's a copy paste, with 5 words added to meet the required minimum. These aren't posts that should be repped!

A quality post, in my opinion should contain:

Correct spelling
Proper use of punctuation
Correct grammar
A thought-out arguement WITH facts
Humour, when neccessary

Unfortunately, several posts don't fit the bill for what qualifies as a quality post. Nuvian certainly doesn't, no offence to him, considering the majority of his posts are simply articles pasted from N4G. It's not JUST Nuvian, mind, but several other members. I myself sometimes copy and paste articles from various sources - but I go the extra mile and add a paragraph or two with my thoughts on the subject. That should pass as a quality post, but I'll leave it down to you whether it does or doesn't.

See I would disagree with that. The post you described should be the forum average. Not a bad post, but not one that people should come flocking to in order to give rep.

I'm not saying a high quality post has to be 5-6 paragraphs, but more often then not if a post is not that long it is not fully developed and often times key elements are missing.

Plain and simple, its not the news you posted thats rep worthy. The only thing that should be judged for rep is what you said after the news, the link, the pic and the video. Anyone can copy paste, its what a person adds to the thread that matters and should be judged on.

Examples of a high quality POTM material post:

The idea of a reppable post has degraded so much. People throw around rep like it should happen 20-30 times a day. It shouldn't, I will see maybe 1-2 reppable posts a day.

I realize I'm asking for high standards, but its high standards that are going to raise the forum average which is what our goal really is.

I didn't say that posting a news article is worthy of reputation. What I'm trying to say is that what the poster writes is worthy of rep. So, for example, Nuvian really shouldn't be repped for any of his posts as they're all copy and paste jobs from N4G, with no input of his own. However, there are topics/posts around where a user has posted an article, but has proceeded to add four or five paragraphs of his own thoughts on the afore mentioned article.

I think that those kind of topics, not ones like Nuvians, deserve to be put forward for PoTM. I also think that the topics/posts you linked to should be put forward, because a lot of work has clearly been put into making them. And I agree that they should be forum standards. I'm sick of seeing 'txt tlk' around the forums.

but I go the extra mile and add a paragraph or two

Well now you're changing things around. Yes, if a user posts a news link and adds what I've described before to their post then they should be repped.

It's hard to determine whether a post is rep worthy though purely by paragraphs. It's rather easy to repeat what others have said in the thread, put in some jargin that could never happen, or some other BS. I mean who hasn't "stuffed" highschool and college essays to meet the minimum 10-15 page requirements.

There has to be a point to the post. The person can't simply be stating,

"I really like the way the blue blends with the yellow in the car design. The developers could have really ruined it if they had gone with the orange but they really pulled through with the design scheme.

I also like that the car has more realistic feel to it. Rather then the arcade feel of most racers, I feel like I'm really driving in this game. It's good to see that devs are caring more about realism these days."

FLUFF!

I realize I'm exaggerating your opinion, but I am trying to make a point that paragraph number doesn't matter. It's possible to say something truly insightful in 2-3 sentences, its difficult but possible.

Example:

Q: Has anyone heard any news on an SSX next gen game?

A: Yes, did you know that EA mentioned it in Burnout Paradise? I heard DJ Atomika say that he "got a call from Mac Frasure(a common character in the SSX series) saying the slopes are getting some good snow, the slopes should be ready by this winter"! I think that was a subtle hint that EA has intentions to possibly announce a next generation SSX game.

That is a boarder line reppable post. It has fact, helps out and answers another members question, and brings something new to the forum that would encourage other members to comment.

But I rarely see, anything as consolidated as that. If a member has that much knowledge typically they'll add more opinion to it, such as a possible E3 announcement or an opinion of how the new game would look/feel.

That is a stupid idea. Senior members are as idiotic/intelligent as the average user. Who's to say that a senior member wont abuse rep just like normal members do?

It's true that if rep is in the hands of the members it will get abused. So there are two options, either remove rep, or take it away from the general public. The only flaw in my system is if senior members become corrupt and start repping jokes, but if they do that....then there's just no hope in general.

Why the **** cant we rep jokes and funny pictures? :? People will rep what they think is worthy, not what you say. Why are you so hell bent on controlling rep??? It doesnt matter! The community is thriving and is well, and thats all that should matter. This "crusade" to make the forum "better" will never stop, but why is it only for unnecessary aspects like rep and skill points?

Could I point out 2 threads that clearly show people don't understand what a quality, reppable post is?

Again, you cant decide on what people can or can not rep.
