View Full Version : What do YOU want from PSU?

Hey all!

As we move forward with changes to the forums and mainpage, I'd like to know what you would like to see from the editors? I'll be honest with you that only Mike (our UK editor) works for PSU full time. Eric is a college student at NYU, and I work full time as an education journalist in Washington, DC. The reason I point that out is that we often struggle to compete with sites that have writers on call at all hours. Beyond that, we just don't have the ability to go to gaming events for journalists - I get an invitation at least once a week that I have to turn down because of my schedule.

That being said, I'm really an old newspaper-style journalist and want to bring something a bit different to PSU's mainpage than you can find at the 100s of other gaming sites. Well, you can find what I'm proposing at several sites, but my goal is to push away from the basic daily news grind that is, in essence, article swapping between the handful of sites that can afford full time journalist to really cover the industry.

So here's some things I'm working on that I'd like to get your feedback on. Please, give as much info as you can because I'm essentially putting in a lot of over time (ha, it's all over time) to get you something you can't get anywhere else.

- video reviews: We all want this, and we have the means, look for these very, very soon. It'll be in beta format because it's a one-man show for now
- industry perspective: Instead of just interviewing someone from Ubisoft about an upcoming game, I'd like to present a bigger picture at the gaming industry, get a perspective on topics like game narratives, a push to digital content, voice acting, violence in games, from the people that actually work in the industry.
- audio interviews/podcasts: If you are anything like me, you hate to read an article that's like a wall of words (yeah, this is turning into that, sorry), so I'm thinking of trying to do some audio interviews. To get the community involved, I'd post the person I'm interviewing, then give you all a chance to propose questions. Also, what do you think of a PSU podcast with staff, and perhaps bringing on some of our users (who want to take part) maybe once a week?
- user driven news: this is a big, big change for PSU and something that will happen over time. We are toying with the idea of essentially giving our users a chance to post on the main page. The idea is the forums are filled with the day's big news, so why not create a system that gets the most talked about forum threads up and center on the mainpage. more to come on this.
- weekly editorials: I'm a big fan of editorials driven by the week's big news. what do you think about seeing a front page editorial each week about the big topics in gaming? Essentially we'd put the groundwork out in an article, and invite our readers to contribute their thoughts on the subject.

What else do you want to see? Do you just want us to compete with other gaming sites, do you want more feature-driven content, more PSN reviews, more of a personal touch/perspective from the editors, more user-driven content? Now is the time to spill your guts and tell us what you want in YOUR site. PSU is what it is because of our enormous user base - even if it's smaller than in previous years.

We ask now because this will drive our decisions moving forward.

Adam, I'm gonna send you a PM. I have a few things I'd like to talk to you about.

OK, no, I'm not. You don't allow private messages from just anyone apparently, so I'll say what I want to say here. Basically, I'm looking for an entry position into the world of journalism. I've always fancied having a career in the journalism field and writing about games would be perfect for me. That being said, do you think it would be possible for me to write a monthly article for the website and/or do a video review/preview for the main site?

Arkano6
01-11-2011, 23:34
In regards to industry perspective, would it be possible to get some of our guys out to E3 this year? If we could snag some big stories before most other sites it may help increase traffic.

Podcasts are an excellent idea. I'm all for podcasts, especially if it involves a random user from the forums being guest-featured once a week.

I'm a bit tight for time right now, so I can't make a thorough post, but I'll make sure to do that tomorrow.

And what's to say the other 242,801 members aren't looking for an entry into the world of journalism?

No one should just 'get' the ability to post on the main site. If anything it should be a community vote.

Monthly review competitions are another good idea. Say you put up a game/product that forum members can review, the best voted/chosen by staff review gets featured on the main site.

Yes on E3, but you didn't officially hear that from me... yet. When all of our arrangments are made, we'll let you guys know.

Good feedback on podcasts with users. Seriously, it could be as simple as we take a new game that's out - I'm reviewing LBP2 as we speak/type - and we could just spend 20 minutes chatting about the game. Or, even better perhaps, if there's a lot of buzz in the forums about something - say new PSP2 images, we'll talk about that.

If you really want to push it, I think a weekly or bi-weekly podcast show would be better. Perhaps have a team of 2-3 people with a guest each week to preview, review and talk about upcoming titles/announcements/events.

Heck, I'd be more than happy to be involved with anything.

I'm not saying I should just 'get' the ability to post on the main site, so calm down. All I asked was if it were possible to provide Adam and Mr. B with a sample of my work and let me know if would be possible to write for PSU. As mentioned, I've had a dream of being a gaming journalist for sometime and writing for PSU would be a great place to start.

um yeah i posted this idea in a few places now

give **** away.

also do like the did with "the quad" on 'Liketotalyawesome' 4 community submissions per week. community votes on them, the winner gets a place in next week auto, and then 3 others are chosen. if you win 3 weeks in a row. you get a "regular" spot on psu to write stuff.

Well video reviews are pretty much a given. I'm surprised we haven't seen them for some time already.

EDIT: As Squirrel said, what happened to give aways? I remember in 2009 PSU gave away a pair of Astro A40's, and 2010 it was FIFA, quite the downgrade there ;).

OK, the giveaway thing.. seriously? I think I gave 7 PS3 games away over the course of just two months. I also ran that Astro Headset giveaway, and that was just our luck that they offered up a product to giveaway. I really do think we try to provide giveaways, granted it's nothing huge, but we try to hook you guys up with the chance to win a PS3 game pretty frequently.

For community reviews - I'll have codes for another PSN game to give away in exchange for a review. I'm open to suggestions on how we decide who gets the chance to review the game.

Like many forum-goers here, I'm not too active on the homepage. However, one thing I've heard a lot of concerning PSU's news is that it sounds as though it's coming from robots. You pretty much hit the nail on the head in the OP with saying "do you want [...] more of a personal touch/perspective from the editors[?]". Yes. There's nothing wrong with having consistent news, but what makes it interesting is when the writers actually add their own touch to it --- that's what sets news on one community apart from news on others, and what could allow us to have news that people prefer over other sites that provide such news.

Ixion

Yeah, a personal touch is always welcome, but please don't overuse that cynical/smug tone that a lot of writers put forth.

One of the reasons why I used to visit Joystiq a lot, it was a much more humourous, informal take on the reporting on the news.

Yeah thats true magazines or news are not as exiting when the writing is plain. maybe if we got a writer or two to give thier input on the news or something.

It's not that we need new writers --- we just need our current writers to use their voice a little bit more. By no means do I question whether or not the writers have the ability to, it's just that I think PSU has reported news in an entirely formal way for a long time. Like I said before; nothing wrong with that, it just makes it less interesting, one reason why I think a lot users shy away from getting their news from the main page.

I love this idea! And perhaps not just that, maybe even a greater focus on their own games. Instead of just "explain story", perhaps "explain why you felt this was a good idea, or went in this direction." Like, the highly divisive ending for PoP 2008, I don't think we've ever had the devs point of view on that.

To get laid with Carocat.

I kid, I kid. She does a very sexy voice though.

Ok ok, realistically, a prize system would be nice. I liked the old PSU where we could buy those little square blocks of icons under our pictures that were game company logos or accessories etc. Or if we have a lot of SP, we could buy a subscription or even PSU t-shirts and enter in contests more than once, let's say 1000sp is worth a chance at winning a prize.

Great feedback on the personality of the writers. Personally, I can't stand when writers get too snub and try to make everything into a joke, but that's just me and my style.

Honestly, if anything, covering this industry in the limited way I have over the past two years has made me pretty jaded about it. When I talk to friends about reviewing a game or talking to a developer or something, I find myself saying "everything is just a bit different than the last game. Really sequels are just more polish on the original game. Oh, look, another first-person shooter, or another apocalypse game, oh another terrible motion control game..., etc." I know that's me just being a jerk about dull games, but it's my opinion of most games. Thing is, I don't want my personal writing style on the main site to represent my often jaded perspectives. The gaming industry is huge, incredibly huge and cutting edge and truly the future... but it's also supposed to be fun, and I like to balance both sides. Make sense?

Yeah definitely agree with Agriel there, like I said in the other thread, humour is what this site needs =D

Giveaways are great and all but I feel they've all been a bit too "Please oh please click on this, please write one comment and never come back" What PSU really needs is a community.

We all like games right? lets play some ****ing games. playing together will make people here get along better and organizing a few tournaments with prizes will drive people here from other sites.

a little big planet 2 design-a-level competition would be great, showcase the best levels, put up a list of PSU user levels and hand out a few prizes for the best ones

Killzone 3 isnt far off either, surely a lot of us would enjoy shooting each other?

Damn... forgot one other features idea I've been rolling around - the PSU Challenge. The idea is simple. We'll pick a user to challenge me (since I have the means to record HD from my PS3) at a game - I can list the games I own - and we'll play a bit, record that stuff, I'll edit it down to a normal video length, then we'll post in the forums for all to watch and laugh as I get pwned by a PSU member. Winners will all get T-shirts or something (for now).

True. Thing is if we review a game, we play it for the review cycle (a week, if that) then we have to move on to the next game. I play FIFA in my down time, and that's out of more than 100 PS3 games. I think I play it because I'm good enough at it where it's mindless, yet a single match is enough to provide 20 minutes of fun. I know a game is really, really good if I go back months later and play it again -- for instance, did that with RDR, Batman: Arkham Asylum, LBP, and UC2. Challenge me at CoD, you will win!

Let me throw another idea out there - what would get you to hit the main page first? I see the future of PSU as being almost entirely community and forum driven. I'd like to make the homepage a place everyone goes to first to see what's happening, what games are really hot that day, what trailers users are digging, etc.

Maybe it sounds too extreme, but would you rather PSU try to compete with the (unnamed) big sites, or do you want us to be more of a user-centered site. I really think we have a wealth of knowledge and passion in our community, so why not give you the simple tools to make the homepage reflect what you care about? I think, in time, this would attract more users to our discussions.

I'm not talking about getting rid of staff content all together, but perhaps we should focus more on unique features, interviews, that sort of thing instead of daily news which you all talk about in the forums anyway.

Thoughts?

1. I think it would be good if some of the senior staff, super mods and admins could be given the power to upload articles on to the main site. It sounds like you guys need some help since you're so busy.

Maybe not content writers if they don't have the background but at least the power to upload new images, trailers and pre made news stories.

2. Also like I said in the other thread; a visible news tip off section/contact form where normal members can help PSU get the story first.

3. I don't think PSU supports Youtube and Gametrailers in the articles from what I can remember so having those implemented if its the case would be good.

4. Maybe if all the comments made on PSU also transfer over to the forums somehow?

Personally, I'd like for PSU to compete with other top news providing sites. One way for us to succeed is to make PSU's style of news different and less conventional than that of other top sites; let's not go throwing around slang terms of anything, but having each writer use their own voice (to an extent) is certainly one positive step forward. Additionally, why not make one of the things that helps us complete be that it is, as you put it, a user-centered site? That doesn't mean the news would suffer, it would simply mean that the community has a bigger voice in the news and that the main page is more connected to the community -- hence, we would have the connection between the main page and forums that we all want, plus that might encourage users to join.

That's an interesting idea --- but granted this sites audience is a gaming one, I just don't see something like that going to much use. Chances are people won't be using PSU as their homepage, so allowing them to do such things wouldn't seem very necessary. I don't know, that's just me.

I suppose I didn't think of customization in that sense; rather I was thinking more along the lines of the overall look of the page, which alone doesn't seem necessary. The ability to filter topics and such displayed on the main page would be nice, though.

I do like teh idea of users being able to rate (or thumbs up) articles etc, so the best ones get pushed to teh top. perhaps there could be user uploaded section, where they write stuff, and then the community can thumb those up. then they will rise to teh top. would be seperate (to an extent) to the actually psu writers, but would encourage user participation, and maybe it would be a good idea to get new members.

Following on from the above post, would it not be possible to implement a 'Thumbs Up/Down' system on the forums? I've seen it before on other forums and it adds a whole new level to the community in terms of 'relationships' and 'friendships', etc. The way it works is simple; if a user makes a post that you find helpful, you can 'thumb up' or 'thank' the post, and a small section is added below that post with all the names of the people who 'thanked' the post/user. What do you reckon?

The thumbs up and thumbs down idea sownds really good i think if we do short term changes we should do that squirrelboy's idea. long term changes would be my idea but my idea needs more thought into it.

Just in case you wanted a link to the 'Thanks' feature/system, the link is here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=231666). It looks fairly easy to install and could be of great use to the forum and community as a whole. There might even be a way to implement it on the PSU main site.

You know... you could just click on your own profile and click "Threads made by user". :snicker

He could...but he's no longer a sub. Any posts/threads made in the sub section won't show up to the public.

I could do that but it wasn't a thread made by me. You mean post's? That would take me too long rather than someone just siffing through the subdoms thread. Hence why I asked someone to check if they could ;)

I don't know why I suddenly assumed he could view it --- I suppose his being purple offset my thought on that one.

@ Wiggy_ - I misread, I thought time and time again you were referring to your sub thread, not the sub thread.

It's just one of those days for me, I guess.

A dark theme is basically all I want. I'm easy to please.

I love dark(dark grey or black) themes simply because it is so much easier on the eyes. Most of my browsing is done at night in low light and the white is just about enough to cause a migraine.

I know the icons caused a security threat, but I would like to see them hopefully return some day. Other than that, it's a very enjoyable site that I read pretty much every day.

Icons are coming back. The shop has been worked on, I believe.

A dark theme is on the agenda too.

As of right now, we still haven't found a VB plug in that does support icons. The original program has been banned from VB usage for causing security leaks. As such, we can't download it anywhere, use it, or even get support... so the original ICON/SHOP is NOT coming back at this point.

What we are investigating are other shop functions.... things to use SP for, or whatever currency that shop will support. We have some ideas and are looking at the feasibility, but right now nothing set in stone.

One thing I can say though is whatever system we put in place will likely not have icons, but will be more robust in what people CAN use SP for.

ICONS are the single most requested feature though LOL

In any event, I believe the colored pips are being worked on, but really, is it THAT important? :)

How about a Ban Users from Thread feature? A full ban is a bit over the top sometimes but some people, who generally are not trolls or flamers, can still get hot under the collar on occasion. Why not use this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=259017) mod which would allow mods to ban someone just from that thread?

Do you use chrome? If so, (also, if I've understood what you're asking for correctly) you can do that already.

I think it's actually a chrome feature, as you can do it to other 'comment boxes' etc...

You guy's working on a multiple choice skins? That's pretty much all i want from the staff. I believe that it would please everyone who likes the new skin and the people who like the original skin like me.

I don't know why the icons is such a high demand. They don't look that good imo.

How about themed backgrounds for our avys. A plain white box just looks meh. Of course the loading times for each page would be horrible so nevermind. How about custom user titles for everybody. Maybe offer subs something else to differentiate themselves from the rest?

How about the mods give us the option to make a colored user-title or at least the know-how (Only for Subs)? So we don't have to constantly go to mods and admins .. They have better things to deal with. We all know as a fact that the subs won't break any of the user-title rules. And if anyone does, give us a warning or if they don't change it, do it yourself and ban them or something? I don't see why not. Not like any of the subs will object to that idea.
