Anyone know of a place running a good deal on 12-month Gold subs right now??...ive been slacking on keeping up with the deals...

That is not a good deal lol. It might be better than "retail", but it's definitely not a good deal. I'd personally wait until I found it for $35 or less.

A good place to keep an eye out is at Buy.com. That is where I buy most of mine. I just bought one there last month for $38.99 (including shipping) for my son. I bought my last one there for $35.
They don't have the deal running right now though.

even on xbl they have good deals now, i renewed when they had the offer for £23 (dunno what that is in $)

Good point. On Christmas day, my brother-in-law turned his Xbox on, and the Xbox Live deal that day was $39.99 I believe. He was a silver member. He bought it right then. No tax, no shipping. His bill was $39.99.
