View Full Version : SMC - What Is It / Latest Invited Members
Well, members have said a great deal recently that the quality of the boards has decreased, due to an influx of new, poor posting members, along with fanboys and spammers. We have listened to your gripes, and in response we have decided to form a Senior Members Council (SMC).
What is the SMC? It is a forum group of experienced, competent members who know the forum rules well, and who will work together with the mods/admins to try and report bad posts/threads/members. This way we can have a more rapid response to troublemakers, and hopfully ensure a more enjoyable forum experience for everybody!
Membership is by invitation only, and those inital candidates have been contacted. If you didn't get contacted -- don't worry, we will always been considering new candidates for inclusion. We are looking for members who have been here for a while, post well and frequently, follow all the rules and use good spelling/grammar; stick to these guidlines when posting and you'll likely be a prospective candidate!

Yeh i think this is a great idea.
I would also like to say that the SMCs shouldnt say who they are, this can make things easier in some weird way i guess..i dont quite think i thought that through too well..
Well, im sure you get what i mean, and plus it will make people think "oh yeh why did they choose him/her and not me" and so on, could start some flame wars.
This should make the forums even easier to manage for mods and admins now, nice one.

Sounds Cool I hope I'm not one of thoose new poor posters. We did this on a skool scandels forum we made up a few years ago it worked well.

and they have a blue item with stars and above the stars it says SMC.
IT may not appeir in their items list, so click on more to see if they are an SMC member, but most SMC member has re-arranged their items to show their membership.

Hi, I am a new member that has spammed on several occasions. I never knew what spamming was until I was notified. I stopped spamming immediatley and apologized for my actions. I hope that I will be a good and active member and hopefully a senior member in the distant future. In the meantime I will seem like a football fanatic with all my posts, but I will tone down if required.

They just look at your post and how good you are and thing's like that.
We look at a lot of things
1) Post quality
2) Ability and willingness to follow forum rules
3) Frequency of visits to the forum
While post count is looked at, it is far from the most important factor.

I like this idea, I too have noticed some problem. I think this mainly started to happen after E3. We need senior members to help the mods out because we are getting more and more members.
Ok You wanted to know who was coming after Adamba so now we have recruited Two new SMC members choosed by the board of Moderators and Admins and some suggesions from the SMC.
We have Welcomed Damnit and just recently Lefein accepted a position in the SMC.
So right now we arnt looking for people, But you will still get considerd if you Post well, be a regular and contribute to the forum well.

Hey mods or admins or whoever read this...has anyone made SMC recently other than the "intitial members" (referring to the original post) when the SMC was first formed?
EDIT: Now that i look at it, I see PS Gamer was the newest member of the SMC back in March 05'. Then phobia in April 05'. Everyone else was back in 04'...dunno

I got one beef with this. I'll never want any part of any forum peace corps team :D, but if a member that posts often and pertinent, abides by the rules and all that, but english is not his native language (angelcurio or me for example) what then. Our grammar is not always that great. I mean I try my best and I bet that all the serious foreign members try their best to do it to but still we sometimes make honest mistakes on words that we just don't have any idea how to spell. And spellcheck is not always an option since we might be in a hurry. Can those members still be considered?
EDIT: I mean if you look at all my posts, I always read them 3 times or more and they are all edited because of typos or grammar mistakes. They are not glaring, my eyes will bleed for a week, kind of mistakes but still.

If anything I'd say if you want to be SMC just show you really care about the Forums.
Undeniably, that's got to be one of the larger deciding factors as to why I was chosen.
I have a question, if you get into the SMC, then do you have to py for the icon. I ask this because it has a very very high price take in the shop. If you do not have to buy it, then im guessing that you get given it? Am i correct?

There is no set limit. It's basically when ever Rebon or the Staff think the Forum will need more Help.

Posted on the SMC forum. We follow a report guideline for reporting threads. When a Mod sees a Reported post he'll enter the SMC forum and go to the Linked thread and do whatever he/she finds suitable.
ok, when you become a moderator can you not go up any more stars. Because Adamb4e has done a lot more posts than some people. But he is still on 3 star. Is that the reason? Also, what powers does a SMC member have?

SMC's report the threads. In a sense sometimes we do more than the Mods. We are usually the first to find the bad threads, so we report them.
The Mod is the actual person that uses our report to physically do what he/she needs to do to that post.
Oh, ok. So ive been reporting advertisments and spam on the forums to the mods. Should i stop doing that if thats the SMCs job?

Thanks! Its not that we don't want to be informed about rules issues or have our forum members become informed. But when all of the forum users jump on someone for violating the rules, it clutters up some of our best threads and takes them so far off topic it can be hard to clean them up.
Of note. Most of our SMC members come from users who regularly report issues through PM to mods or other SMC.

If we did that, than every user on the board would report posts. Mods PM box would become cluttered.
The SMC are actually more efficient than having members spamming the mods.
Now, if you could have a report button when you become part of the SMC...that would deffinatly make reporting a thread easier.
How about have it so that the report button for that post disappear when it's reported?
Yeah, good idea. But the report button would send an automated message, with a link. To All SMC Members so that it gets reported faster.

I do believe the phpbb MOD I posted above does this. It has an option to allow a post to be reported only once and IMO this would be much more efficient than having SMC members posting a link to a thread for mods to read. The MOD also has a comment box so that the person who reported said thread will be able to tell the mods why the thread was reported. If a member is reporting threads for no reason then that member will be banned. However, I am sure this mod can be configured to be used only by specific individuals (SMC) if needed. :wink:

The mods and SMCs will have a really hard time dealing with the connection at the same time as dealing with the posts. So what i mean is that for only the days when E3 is on show, we should start picking up voluntiers that will report junk posts or threads. It only one month and something to the E3 so it has to start as fast as possible.

i will ask something off topic. With the recent slowdowns we have been dealing with lately, is there any guarratie that the server will be up (without some strange database errors) in the months near the ps3 launch?
A couple of months ago, rebon said that the server was being upgraded, but we are still having slowdowns, so are still doing somethings to speed up the forums?

Well one thing you can do is not post in them. I find posting in these threads quite pointless and a waste of time. If I see one of these I usualy PM to the SMC(mods are hidden usualy) and they take care of it. Member can help the SMC and mods too by pointing out threads to them.
The one thing I find annoying in some members is just to get the skill points they post it has been posted already just to get some skill points. Why don't the PM to the SMC or a mod, its just skill points people. They come and go.

Yes, firefox does a really good job. He is on almost as much as me :wink:
I think that he, along with others, have proved themselves worthly of the title and are doing their very best to keep these forums clean.

It varies, depending on the situation and the amount of active people.
For instance I was promoted along with 4 others to SM about 2-3 months ago. We just added 4 more about 2 weeks ago to help with E3.
Rumor has it we might add 1 or 2 more before E3.
I know it seems like a lot of people. But we must keep up with the spam and pointless posts. Some SMs are hardly ever on, but we don't want to demote them.
If the quality of your posts are phenominal and the and the situation comes up it's very posible for people to become SMs.

I see that its not based on the amount of posts and how long you ve been on forums, but on the quality of posts. I see that Cera was promoted byt Aquanox, Chocobo Kid, is not. I m not saying its a bad choice im just checking that its based on quality posts rather than the number of posts.

We are a growing community. We feel we can be larger and better.
Having an un-biased forums along with a professional Mod and SM staff is exactly the type of image we want to have.
So yes, quality and intelligence matters, the most. Next in line are spelling and grammar. Being clear in your posts is a must.
However you could be Shakespear and come in on day 1 but might not get the SM position. We are looking for active posters who we know will do their job. That is where the psot count does come in. It's not a huge factor, but it certainly helps in seeing if you're active.

I have never seen him on for 8 months. Even in the "who's online" bar he is never on.

A member here a long time ago got to Mod and he only had 20 posts!! It was Apple Dragon. He is no longer a Mod.

Hey there:
Well, SMCs and MODS should be getting ready for the upcoming E3 since now.
Once SONY gives the final PS3 speech, a lot of topics containing only "THE PS3 LAUNCHED!!!" will appear.
As my posts are not really good to come to SM, i only hope i can be a voluntier and help in everything you need while E3. I can report, i can expand my E3 cleanup campaing so people start thinking about how to post during E3.
Maybe we could put the "report" button only while E3, and remove it after, so it can be much, much easier to report junk threads.
Also i have to mention that it could be a good idea to have a MODs and SMCs schedule and where they would be assigned, for example:
Siren, perfect sin, adamba4e, firefox and soldier one are assigned to PS3 Games section.
We could also have a Announcement in EVERY single subforum about E3 and how to join the cleanup campaing (or maybe just mention that to join they have to wear the E3 cleanup campaign logo)
As this is going to be the most important E3 in the gaming history, i think we should get ready now that we have almost 11.000 members registered.
I hope this few ideas help.

We will, definately. The SMC and Mods are coping but during E3 with the growth of a couple of thousand members i don't think they will be able to cope. There are quite a few good members that are capable of working in the SMC (from what i've seen) and i think that they sgould at least be given the chance to prove themselvesduring E3, maybe as temp SMC and Mods?

When you create a group in the board settings, you can assign specific atributes to the members of that group. Thatīs how you can assign different colors to different ranks in the forums.
For example, in my page, we got a Super Mod, who supervises the activities of the normal mods, and in the board settings we put him a personalized color (different from the ones that normal users, mods and administrators has). But we use vbulletin, so i am not quite sure if its the same with phpbb.

Very true, phpbb is really famous for being so hackeable, we had it a couple of years ago, but after a hacker made a disaster with our forums, we ended moving to vbulletin.

Siren has become soft :cry:; I think its because of the 360.
Come on guys, Siren isn't that bad. He may be strict, but that makes for a good mod more often than not. Besides, he is involved in the industry, so it is good to have him around.

I think we shouldn't rush anything here. It is not yet decided whether Firefox will be banned forever. As you can read Link (http://www.ps3forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=19099&start=420) , it is still to be decided. I think Firefox needs a second chance, because he always followed the rules, had great posts. He made some good stickies, and he was a good leader of the reviewsquad.
But that's my opinion, and it is not for me to decide it.
He was a brilliant leader, and we arent rushing anything, we just need to be prepared unless he doesnt come back. (Even though he obviously will)

We'll probably have a flood of users before the launch, but after launch it may quiet down.
Not really, all the new users will be looking for somewhere to talk abou ttheir shiney new purchase. I think we are the biggest forum out there. Why wouldn't launch mean more members for us?

Honestly, I don't care. It's not like I get an ego trip over moderating. Moderators exist so that a greater number of people just like them can have a civil conversation on the basis of agreed upon rules. I've managed too many forums and been webmaster for too many websites to be under the delusion that having "power" on any one website makes me a better person.
I enjoy the forum, and I will contribute however others feel is best. Whether that is simply a poster, a moderator, or an SMC.

Lefien resigned from the SMC but his color is still blue and I believe he still has acess to the SMC board.

Well lately I have reported a lot of topic that were already posted. I think that is justy what everyone should do...just report when you see something "bad".

Actually, now i come to think about it you'd make a good SMC. You'r English has really improved and i'm sure becoming an SMC could only help that. When did Lefein actually resign from the SMC?

Lefein asked to be removed from the SMC. I can only assume that this was due to time/availability constraints.
Sokme people dont deserve to be on the SMC..im not telling name. As well as some mods...
I would like to see Jordan, Tribu, and Angel as mods, and Thorzilla as a SMC.

Trib is a good mod at his graphics forum and yeah thor should be in the smc

Staff members are mods, maybe admins too. Maybe 2 or 3 more would do.

We already discussed the problem about the Mod's not being on anymore. The Admin's said it doesnt matter as they did prove that they were worthly and that it wasn't doing any problems with them just being there.
I think that you're (Trinity) idea's are good but that you should know that we shouldn't be discussing that by now?

Nothing chnaged, it's just that PS3 and Game discussion is getting boring and I am spending more time in General Chit Chat and Design Corner where there is no arguing and hot heads.
