How exactly are skill points assigned? I made and edited a post and got the following:

Your message has been entered successfully.
You earned Skill Points: 0.0099999999999998 Skill Points for that post!
What might cause that?
Hrm, I just noticed it uses the term "Skill Points" twice. A tiny bit redundantly redundant don't ya think? :p

Skill points get modified when you edit your post. But stating you earned Skill Points twice is a little funky.

But are they based on the number of words in your post, or what? Because as far as I can tell, the longer my post is, the more points I get... even if the whole post was practically SPAM.

And why is the max per post 50 points?

And why do I keep losing points. It appears that a moderator has something against me, because I had 300 points the other day, and then dropped to 150 or so. Not trying to "blame" anyone, but I just don't have any clue why I lost points.

Well it could be that you either made a bad post or because you bought your avatar, that takes away 150 points.

Nah, I've had my Avatar since the first day. So it wouldn't be that. I could have made a bad post, but so far I've seen the mods make a notice that points were deducted, and I didn't see that. I may have just missed it, but I was pretty sure I was ontop of most of my posts.

stating you earned Skill Points twice is a little funky.

Yea I agree. Never really noticed that before to be honest. I'm sure it's just a simple little change. I'll fix it soon.

Well actually if you read it carefully the second skill points thing is actually only labeling the number not stating that you earned more skill points.

It's not the labeling that's funky, it's the fact that it says it twice when it's not necessary.

Er, I was trying to point out the degree of precision. This is the first time I've seen that. Before it was always two decimal places of precision, aside from once where I got exactly 10.

Also, if I knew more about the point system I might be able to suggest improvements, though there are some flaws I don't think I can fix.

Edit:
Just got another one:
"You earned Skill Points: 0.030000000000001 Skill Points for that post!"

I thoght they where assined by speed you typed and the more you typed. Cuse when im like making a post it and i just stop to do something else in the middle of it and come back and finish its like not as many points as i would get if i had done it with out stoping. Im not sure if that makes any sense but.

i dont know i dont get it. i sometimes get that too, usualy no matter what i post or how mush i post i get from 8-10 points.

i think it might be based on many things and speed and how much we type are just a few contributing factors. i have no idea what the other factors are it is just a suggestion. maybe one of the mods or admins will tell us.

Same i always get between 8 and 10, but once i got like 19 but i made a new topic. I really don't understand it all that well. Dose spelling contribute to it?

really please we are all so confused and things are just becoming more and more confusing

I don't think spelling is a part of it and it seems like speed shouldn't be either. I always spell check mine either with the Google spell checker of MS word's, so it takes me longer. I'd like to see it based on grammar, pronunciation, spelling type of stuff but that would be difficult.

Its a combination of post type (new topic/reply), length of post, and a few "secret" factors. Staff will also award extra points for consistent high quality posting.

Sometime you get skill points but sometimes you don't. Why is that

Certain forums, such as this one, don't seem to assign skill points, though sometimes it'll say "You earned skill points for that post" even though you don't. :?

You don't get any skill points in certain forums to discourage spam posts just to gain points. It still says "You earned skill points for that post" and omits a number because you didn't recieve any. I agree it should be more clear, but its just the way the mod was created. =/

I see no reason for confusion, just round the number in your head(0.030000000000001=0), but I've noticed I received half a skill point for editing a post, and edited it again, and received the same amount, but my amount of skill points where raised by 1pt. So maybe the mod does track the amount of skill points to the decimal. :? Ugh it says I have exceeded the alloted amount of posts allowed, and on every topic on other sections says I do gain any points, am I posting too much? (there is so much to say...)

Brandon

Yes you can, in fact, post too much. And when you reach the post limit, you stop receiving skill points.

smitty61
07-23-2005, 21:11
Is the limit in a posts per day sort of thing or it it a total number of posts in a certain forum or something along those lines?

Rebon

There is no limit on number of posts, however after posting more than 20 posts in 3 hours you no longer receive skill points for those exceeding posts.

ok i have some things to say:

Well actually if you read it carefully the second skill points thing is actually only labeling the number not stating that you earned more skill points.

true it might supposed to say you earned 0.0099999999999998 skills points for that post. also i get that when i edit just one or two words and dont add anything but if you edit and add words you get more.

i get this all the time but usually in the general chit chat and no where else so i still get points. is that right.

As has been stated before, you do not receive skill points for posting in the General Chit Chat and Suggestions/Comments sections.
