infinity ward creative strategist robert bowling has said that building a new engine for the call of duty franchise "would be counter productive".

when it was put to him on twitter that "someone just needs to spend the $ and construct a new engine for the cod franchise... Ground up," bowling replied: "that would be counter productive. An engine takes years and years to develop and get right."

as for battlefield 3, we saw the title in action at gdc this morning and our pc gamer colleagues labelled it "the bestlooking pc game in the world right now".

when it was put to him on twitter that "someone just needs to spend the $ and construct a new engine for the cod franchise... Ground up," bowling replied: "that would be counter productive. An engine takes years and years to develop and get right."

his comments were made at the same time the internet started going battlefield 3 crazy over the cod rival's first gameplay trailer, which showed off dice's impressive frostbite 2 engine, described by ea as "incredible technology that takes animation, destruction, lighting, scale and audio to new heights".

All of the call of duty games since 2005's cod2 have run on the infinity ward engine, which has been modified for each iteration of the series, and it sounds like it's going to be no different when the next cod title releases.

Bowling was also asked over the last day whether he still works for activision, and if he's going to join his former bosses at new studio respawn.

He replied: "i work at infinity ward and plan to remain here. We've got a great team and working on a great project."

infinity ward is rumoured to be co-developing a new modern warfare game for release this year with fellow activision studios sledgehammer games and raven software.

Last month, the uk official playstation magazine lent credence to speculation that modern warfare 3 will be a prequel starring fan favourite character ghost.

I especially recommend reading the comments, judging from them, people seem to be getting tired of: "the same copy paste job that we see every year"

The COD games utilize an engine that is "passable" but eventually (or quite soon, rather) they are going to hit a graphical ceiling when compared to their competitors. The gameplay and graphics are not different enough to continually keep repurchasing this game, and when Battlefield 3 comes out there may be hell to pay.

That's my two cents.

A lot of us can't get enough COD every year, and don't mind the engine the way it is. We love the gameplay first and foremost. COD bring it in spades.

The battlefield 3 gameplay trailer made it stunningly obvious that the COD graphics haven't improved in the last 3-4 years. But I honestly believe you could put a COD logo onto an aids invested pig carcass and it would sell more units than any other FPS title. The hype around this series is insane.

I understand the BF3 trailer was from a pc BUT it was from a pre-alpha build. Which to me means there's a strong chance the consoles will get close to that look... the PC final build however will probably be one of the best looking games of 2011 (on any platform).

I actually agree with this, as much as I complain about the lack of support and creativity from the COD devs and the ludicrous amount of hype around the series I still buy each COD. And I actually enjoyed Black Ops (when the servers weren't being dicks) but I am very quickly growing sick and tired of the lazy way the cod developers are going about things now. COD 4 was brilliant, it was refreshing, new, shiny and awesome. They discovered a winning formula and stuck with it. And no matter how much the next game sucks, it'll still sell far more than Battlefield 3.

I genuinely believe that if MW3 doesn't do something outstanding this year, I'll be striking it off my "must buy" list.

I don't put any stock in the comments section of the PSU news items, especially when they're populated by morons like the guy who said hardcore gamers don't play CoD, and that only "casual gaming idiots" buy it every year. Like he's somehow better than anyone who plays CoD.

You'll notice it's the same people who seem to comment on the CoD news reports - they claim to have had enough of CoD, yet they can't help but tell us all that every time theres a new news story, like we're all supposed to care.

Personally, I play CoD because I know what I'm getting. I enjoy playing it with my friends, and I enjoy tearing through the campaigns. It's a guaranteed 1000G on my gamerscore every year.

It can't be any worse than Black Ops.

Bring back the team that gave us CoD4, the real Infinity Ward.

Even though I think BO'ps was horrible, I can't wait for a new COD every year. Its a good thing the majority of my psn friend list plays mw2, makes it easy to party up every time.

"would be counter productive" should be read as "too lazy; money spent on a new engine should be pocketed by execs"

You know i like call of duty i own all of them but they know they can sell games just by putting a name on it.They sell on hype and they know they can get away with it i for one find it insulting that he said that I hope battlefield 3 blows it out of the water i know which one i'm going to pre order. I know mw3 will probably beat battlefield 3 sales but maybe it can break cod's mold and make it evolve with the rest of gaming.

If there are mod tools for a game, I will get the game (FPS obviously) COD4 I believe was the last to have a rat-house maps, which are the maps I truely enjoy. no mod tools = no buy. Same goes with BF3 and any FPS game, no mod tools, no buy. I'll just get Red Orchestra 2 :) tada mod tools, yep yep.

I agree. The COD graphics engine already looks seriously outdated.
