View Full Version : NGP Hitting Europe This Year?
When SCEA boss, Jack Tretton, mentioned earlier this year that the goal was to get the NGP out in at least one territory by the end of 2011, we naturally assumed it would be Japan. S
ources speaking to MCV think otherwise, with third party licensees insisting that the handheld will be out in Europe by Christmas. It seems that development deadlines for Western releases have been set for the end of summer so that they are ready in time for an end of year release.
If this were to happen it would be an absolutely huge surprise, and would delight Sony fans in the EU. We await an official announcement, hopefully around E3.

Sounds plausible, but this can't be true surely? Does this mean EU only, or EU+Japan? EU+US only? Or Worldwide? I don't see Sony leading with EU and not giving the US and Japan the love this year...

Europe has become, by far, Sony's most important region in regards to their gaming devices (PS3 is much more successful here and AFAIK PSP is too). Wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if Europe, for once, got something big first from Sony (even if it's by less than a week or two).
I thought it was launching worldwide this year?They've said it's a possibility, but at this time they aren't quite ready to commit to such schedule, at least not worldwide. I think a Japanese launch was pretty much confirmed for this year, but Sony is Sony and you can never be too sure about them doing what is sensible. Also, I don't remember if they specified if they meant this calendar year or 2011 fiscal year, which could mean a March 2012 launch for all we know.

I wonder if the NGP will be region-free?
I can see the NGP launching in two of the three major territories (the three major being Japan, U.S. and Europe). Demand in Japan at launch will likely be strong so Sony need to factor that in.
The current PSP is selling very well in Japan at the moment also and the NGP will be fully back-wards compatible with the PSP.
If you take it as likely that a worldwide release is out, someone has to be first, someone last. Bearing in mind precedence, the EU might be a little more forgiving about being last than the US might. The only way I see the EU getting the NGP at launch is if all the other major regions get it then too.
