View Full Version : Port or Multi-console release?

Seeing how easy it is to bring Ps3 games to the NGP, could we be looking at something closer to actual multi-console releases, (as in, if something is released on Xbox360 and Ps3 at the same time, its not considered a port) rather than ports in the traditional sense?

Infact, could the ngp blur the line enough that we have to look at ports in a new way?

There were many reasons the psp could not deliver the "console" experience it was aiming for. Lack of input being the most notable.

It seems the NGP is the perfect blend of power, input and graphics, and could potentially revolutionize the way we look at handheld gaming. Now many people will look at the NGP and say "Sony isn't doing anything new, ect." But, if you look deeper into the system, you will see that potentially, this could be a game changer.

Never before could you get a true current gen console experience on a handheld up until this point. Maybe the NGP will deliver this, maybe not.

And of course, even if it can, some people will say they don't want to buy a game they already have on their PS3, which is fine and of course correct. But, obviously they wouldn't be targeting *you* persay as multi-platform releases arent so you could buy the game multiple times, but for the system you want it on. I personally would go for the NGP version of said release, but to each his own, we all have different needs and preferences in mind, which is why something like this is *potentially* amazing.

With that all being said, what do you guys think? Will the NGP get Ports? Multi-Platform Releases? Some hybrid inbetween where they use some sort of trick to lower the size of the game?

*Due note, I am not talking about replacing original content made NGP specific, but rather simply games that will be released as multiplatform in the first place. I.e 3rd party games already coming to both xbox360 and ps3. Mass effect 3/bioshock/batman/CoD and so on.*

To be honest I probably wouldn't buy many of the type of ports you speak of. I have a PS3 for those games - which would obviously be the best version of said game.

My NGP purchases would be purely original content, thats what is needed to drive the system. Is there that many people who would buy the same game they could get on a PS3?

I cant speak for everyone, but I know for me, I would.

The reason being is, I dont always have time to sit around in front of my tv, boot up my ps3 and play. And even when I do, theres no saying I will be able to hog the HDTV in the apartment.

I am on the go pretty often, and being able to play ps3 games during commute/travel/train/plane etc. would be incredibly awesome.

So in a sense, its basically looking at the situations people are in. Some people want to lay in bed and play, and have a movie on their TV while they are laying down and playing.

So yea, there are a ton of reasons why someone would, these are just a few from my own personal life as to why I would rather get them on my NGP as opposed to xbox or ps3.

Plus, there are people who dont even have a console, and will end up just having an NGP, but yea tons of reasons.

Basically, you just have to look at other peoples perspectives, it probably isnt too hard to see the situations.

Several publishers/developers already do this with the DS/PSP when releasing console games. Ubisoft is notorious for this. I'd imagine the NGP release will just be similar in visuals to the PS3 version of the game.

Input really isn't a huge issue either. The touch pad on the back compensates for the lack of L2/R2, and there's going to be 2 analog sticks.

Yea, that's why I was saying how close to "ports" (as we know them) and multi-platform release, do you think we are going to be looking at? Obviously a game being ported to PsP during this current gen, would not be a very good game, for multiple reasons. (Power, input, grapics, etc.)

But will we be seeing Assassins creed as awesome as it is on ps3/360 because there are very few changes needed?

Will we redefine what we call ports? Reason being is, ports have a negative connotation, while Multi Platform releases are often 3rd party games that are actually really good, such as fallout, mass effect, assassins creed and so on.

Visuals will be very close. The NGP has a fraction of the resolution PS3/360 games has. There will likely be less intensity put into the shaders and shadows, as well as texture resolution. Over all the game will look similar. Input will also be extremely similar because of the possibilities the touchpad on the back open up. I'm assuming it's capable of at least 4 points of simultaneous touch input.

Most "multi-platform releases" as you define it are indeed ports from one lead platform to another. Often times the games are developed fully on PC and brought to each console through that manner.

NGP will probably be the first handheld i buy in a long time. Never had a PSP and i regre that because i wanted one on so many different occasions. Now i might as well wait. If the price isn't a wallet buster then i'll try to get it at release

I think Sony has done well with the NGP, it adds what the PSP was missing the dual analog sticks of course. Touch screen/pad, I don't really mind but a lot of people used to nintendo products would probably like it more.

With the extra analog stick and also the increase in performance will allow devs to make multi-console releases. If the NGP is powerful enough to handle ps3 games then they should release games like LBP2 and GT5 with a bit less detail of course but keep all the physics and gameplay the same to be able to versus PS3 users also use cloud saving between the two.

But who knows its up to Sony

But it would also be a great handhold to create different games on, since afterall it is a portable. With games like Call of Duty already announced, since it is afterall the fastest selling video game brand. All the kids will be rushing to get a NGP to take it to school to versus their friend who already has one who's been versusing other kids over wifi on call of duty at lunch time.
Well thats if Sony can market it right and it catches on.

Then the portable also has games for the more hardcore gamers who don't want to mess round with child play games like CoD, so they get Uncharted, Killzone or something.

I think we'll see the NGP as a handhold that most people will play online with, they'll take it round to their friends who has a wireless router (who doesn't?) and then jump online together or a co-op game.

Surely its he future of all portable handholds
