Those few lines that came from Fassbender (Magneto) you can tell he's going to steal the movie.

So far so good for X-Men: First Class.
The film was recently screened for film blog sites like Slash Film, Hitfix, among others. Though an embargo is placed on official reviews, the initial reactions so far prove to be very positive.
Drew McWeeny of Hitfix has proclaimed "X-Men: First Class is a genuinely good movie, not just a good superhero movie. Big and bold and aggressively told, it feels to me like this is the first film in a brand-new franchise, and even the few very wicked and enjoyable references to Singer's films that are hidden in this one don't tie it down. This is ground zero, and I think Fox just got it right, really right, in a way I can't say it feels like they have on any of their Marvel films so far. With the right support, and with this film's key creative team onboard, a sequel to this could well be the "X-Men" epic we've been waiting for since day one", while Gregory Ellwood of the same site has commented "Even better than Spider-Man 2, Iron Man or any Marvel movie so far in my opinion. Ambitious, smart and when it's good, it's very good."
Slash Film has written "Going into the film, I had so many expectations (most of which were set-up by the trailers). I had assumed that the advertising was being packed with all the moments in an effort to sell a action-less origin story, but I was surprised at how much action was actually the film. I don’t think anyone will see this movie and come out disappointed. It strikes a great balance of being accessible to non-comic book fans and packing some pretty cool easter eggs that comic geeks will love."
Brendan Connelly of Bleeding Cool has chimed in "First Class contains some of the briskest and most efficient storytelling I’ve seen in any recent blockbuster. An awful lot happens, and awfully quickly at times, but it’s all clear and while some nice moments might be over in the blink of an eye, this can only reward repeat viewers."
In a somewhat subdued positive reaction, Den of Geek has said "So despite all the ropey posters and off-putting promo material, X-Men: First Class manages to be a summer movie with something to say. Let’s just hope they don’t run this one into the ground, too, because I dread seeing an X-Men: Economy Class down the line."

My second most anticipated movie of the summer. The conflicts sound promising and I'm quickly becoming a big Fassbender fan. Not to mention that close-up of Banshee twisting in the air looked really nice.

I cant wait til this movie comes out, I think that The X-Men series has the best Marvel movies. I also think that the only Super hero movie that is going to be better than X-Men first class is the new Green Lantern movie that is coming out sometime this year.
After 17 reviews so far, this movie has a 100% on RottenTomatoes.
Could it be.....the perfect film?
Gah i was hoping to see this whille i was in york this thursday but gonna be too late :(
I've lost all interest in the X-Men franchise now. However, my brother wants to see it, and one website gave it a five out of five, so I may just have to reignite my interest in it. At least it seems at the moment we finally have an X-Men film without Wolverine...
Might go see it on Wednesday when it's released.
Looks loads better then i'd ever imagine after X-3 I was quite worried

Ouch.76 on RT. Both Thor and Fast Five border on 80.
What's wrong with Wolverine?
Even though he's a key character, there was a little too much focus in the [first three] X-Men films, compounded by a dedicated movie.
I agree, it's nice having a clean, Wolverine-free slate, that focuses on Charles and Erik.
This looks pretty outstanding and the reviews (though mainly from "geek" sources) have me pretty excited to see this.

The reason First Class doesn't have him is because he wasn't one of the first X-Men.

It's a good thing you started reading at that time because the original line-up was different. My dad isn't disappointed with the movie but he's used to the one from the 50's or 60's. Whenever it started.

I need an "ol geezer" tag in my avatar
I actually haven't read anything mainstream in the last 15 years or so. I still pick up the occasional book from Gaiman, Alan Moore, etc., and revisit some regular titles compiled as GNs. I've actually been thinking about scoring those digital collections which seem like a great deal, hundreds of issues across 40 years of publication.

This is probably going to be only good X-men movie for a while, unless 20th Fox get smart and hires Darren Aronofsky back to direct Wolverine and give him full creative control, but one can dream.
Some ***hole had the balls to give this a negative review. So this stands at 96%.
That's OK, I think the negative reviews are going to be a very small minority. I mean this part of the review:
Vaughn hints that he’s aiming for an ‘Adam West’s Batman’ style X-Men film
..pretty much means he missed the mark. Really? Vaughn was making a silly, campy X-Men film using mutants as a metaphor for racism, the Cuban missile crisis and Nazi prison camps? I'm waiting for the negative review from some of the other movie reviewer intelligentsia like Armond White.
The "red" reviews are extremely positive (not just borderline good), but you have to assume some people won't like the genre, wanted something completely different ("Holy war crimes Batman!!!") or are just the knee jerk contrarian.

The additional positive reviews have diluted the *single* bad review down, so the overall rating is back up to a 98%. That's pretty outstanding, plus at this point, there's a few notable mainstream sites/critics giving it a big thumbs up like Variety, Hollywood Reporter, etc. I'm sure like I suggested above there are still some additional negative reviews on the way, but this is a pretty major success critically speaking (I'm sure one of the top 2 or 3 reviewed marvel movies?)

Cowboys vs. Aliens seems the most unrealistic thing ever. Like Cowboys from over a century ago are gping to have lazer guns and other hi-tech equipment.
I went to see it today. I liked the first one the best, but I think that I now like First Class the best. I thought it was really good. It has more depth and emotion, as well as the action, and it's refreshing to have more origins of other characters for a change.
This is a spoiler:
There are a few good cameos in it...
Wolverine does make a cameo in it. I wonder if some people will just focus on his scene rather than the rest of it, but his scene was quite hilarious.
I'd say that if you're wondering whether or not you should go see that you should just go see it. As I said previously, I had lost interest in the whole X-Men franchise, but now, I'm glad that I went to see it.

AHAHAHAHA
Charles and erik - enter bar "hey we have a proposition", wolverine "F off", charles and eric swiftly leave bar. ahahahaah
Still, I felt the relationship between Erik and Charles was too rushed and ended with their paths changing too soon for a friendship to be as close and deep as portrayed in the comics.

I hope X-Men kicks the crap out of Green Lantern. I mean I hope Lantern is decent for Ryan's sake, I like him, but so far it just looks like the typical CGI filled action movie (looks too close to Fantastic Four). And same goes for Dark of the Moon, not liking how overblown it seems so far. Just by the trailers I think Harry Potter is gonna trounce it, and I'm not even a fan of the witches and broomsticks stuff. The last few movies were well done, even if Part 1 felt slow.

It's the big smoke villain that looks like a cross between Fantastic Four's enemy and The Day After Tomorrow.
And Transformers is joining them with that big snake/warm machine (forget its proper name).
I mean Star Trek is more relatable and that's on a starship in some other galaxy. Anyway, those are my doubts from the trailers, we'll what happens. The only reason I have some degree of hope is from Thor turning out fairly good.

Ahh I see what you mean with the smoke monster, I hope Thanos won't be a smoke/cloud of death in The Avengers because then I will be pissed. What do you think of Captain America? I heard people are saying his skinny self is all CGI. Is that true?Captain America is much more practically shot which is nice, but I still have my issues... the main one is the blockbuster shininess on an period story. It seems almost G.I. Joe in some parts.
As for his CGI slimfast, put it this way... you don't make an actor super skinny to that extent and then get him super ripped. It takes months to get him to that super size. However it doesn't mean the skinny body is CG. That could be another actor with his head mapped on it. Same thing with the twin bothers in The Social Network.
Btw, Super 8 is a decent example of a period movie that looks the period. I just hope J.J. calms down with the lens flares, seems like he has though.

woah..the winkles were CGI?! I didn't even notice! And there was a shot in that movie where everything looked miniature, it's where they race on the lake and lose..now I see more directors putting the same shot in other films this year..
Super 8..I'm kinda mixed on that. On one hand, the music and the children leads kind of make me want to stray away from seeing it. But then there's the serious tone to it. There's something serious about it - the monster. And we don't even know if it's actually a monster because JJ loves to hype us up.
And the only reason I'm seeing Captain America is for the Avengers tie-in. I can't wait to see Howard Stark and Nick Fury again.

And there was a shot in that movie where everything looked miniature, it's where they race on the lake and lose..now I see more directors putting the same shot in other films this year..One of the brothers was the actor Armi, the other was a different guy that did an amazing job acting like a twin. Then they pasted Armi's face on the second actor.
That miniature effect is called a Tilt Shift. It fakes the very shallow depth of field on wide shots to make it seem very small.

I really enjoy that change-up from the usual. I really like the part in the trailer where the adult says to the main character who is a boy "No one will believe what I saw" and the boy says to him "I do".
And the only reason I'm seeing Captain America is for the Avengers tie-in. I can't wait to see Howard Stark and Nick Fury again.I'll see how the reviews are. The main reason I'll be seeing Green Lantern and that one is because I won't be paying. I do want to see Transfomers 3 to see if it does suck but more importantly whether Bays 3D implementation actually works or if it blows. Like I mentioned I'm not expecting much but I'll give it a single viewing.
Pretty much for me it's X-Men, Super 8, and Potter for my anticipated blockbusters. Mainly cause I think those are the ones that will have something worth watching, rather than mind-numbing action.

Anything below 90% should not be seen.
But seriously, it was a quality movie. Go see it, if not just for the greatness of Kevin Bacon and the wicked hawtness of January Jones.

It was better than the other 4 X-Men movies. The continuity between them was a little frustrating at times, but most people could care less about that. Probably the best comic book movie you will see for the next year.

I really liked this movie.
It blows the other 4 movies out of the water, in my opinion. Well, maybe not the first X-Men, but definitely the other 3.

i really enjoyed first class, seeing the origins of some of the characters and how they got together was great. As said above, Magneto is a badass and there is a '007' feeling about his early style of getting the job done, i thought there was a hint of Austin Powers about Xavior too, but in a good way of course. The effects are great and it feels more like a cold war movie than a comic book movie due to the involving story and clever characterisation. And it has some awesome cameo's from the other films too, one in particular made me LOL.
overall a solid 9/10 from me, my favourite X-men movie so far

...and the wicked hawtness of January Jones.
It's a good job she's hot 'cause she can't act for s**t. She was by far the weakest link in this otherwise outstanding film.
And the Wolverine cameo almost made me choke on my popcorn. Brilliant.
I am planning to watch this great movie this weekend. Lets see what will happens next then.

dont get me wrong, i loved the movie. But i thought them trying to relate teh movie to the cuban missle crysis was weak. It was an easy option, they basically just said " okay, your going to threaten everyone with death and thats how the cuban missle crysis happened" it just seemed to easy

It was an easy option, they basically just said " okay, your going to threaten everyone with death and thats how the cuban missle crysis happened" it just seemed to easyI thought it went along well with the war theme the movie had. Between the armies of course, but also between the characters and even the internal conflicts. It also presented a tipping point where mutants could shine as a force for good, almost a superhero team, or a threat to humanity.
You have two superpowers of the world at that time, Russia and the US...
and by the end of the movie they're actually joining forces against this greater threat than either of them. And the audience sees what Magneto's war was founded on.
The one thing I thought that was a bit daft was the side-reel, multi-panel retelling of the Cuban missile crisis. That part at least for me took me out the emotional investment of the weight of the world on the dynamic with the mutants and somewhat bringing us back to the fact it is still a comic book movie. The casting was brilliant and by far the highlights of the movie and the critics agree, was the relationship of Erik and Charles. Moreover Jennifer Lawrence held her own in this as well and these three really where at the heart of the movie.
Another thing to note that of the recent movie delving into this genre, X Men: First Class does origin stories quite well in that they take the concepts that they are a minority at this moment but a growing population that deserves what to be accepted with two conflicting avenues with Erik (Malcom X) and Xavier (MLJ) and how different walks of life can influence the actions we undertake in the future. Moreover the concept of self concept plays heavily on this as well as the predestined possibility of one day becoming the ones who are literally the next age in earth's history and evolution of human being's.

Was really good and the actors looking nothing like Magneto and Professor X didn't bother me.
Couple of complaints though-
Darwin - Surely his mutant power would have saved him from the ball of energy in his stomache. I would have thought he could turn into water/mist or get an iron stomache or something to save him from the explosion.
Also didn't like how he did all that to save the flying chick and even though he got killed by KB she still went with him anyway.
Oh and i thought Cyclops was one of the founders of Professor X's school.
Awesome film though, i hope they keep making more and completely forget about the other films ever existing. (Particularly the last stand)

I think since this movie is before the school is officially started is has the off line-up. I think following this movie's logic, Jean Grey and Scott Summers and the others come in once the school is established. Professor X did say they were the first "students".
