PS3 Controller Named SIXAXIS?
They can't call it Dual Shock anymore, can they?

http://media.1up.com/media?id=3026525 (http://media.1up.com/media?id=3026525) Sony's (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153593#) PS3 controller can't be called the Dual Shock 3 if it doesn't rumble (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3151621&did=1), so what's the company to do? Rename their controller.
A 1UP user passed along the suggestion that we check the patent records for the name 'Sixaxis' and see what turned up. Scanning the trademark's text it's clear that this could be any number of things (see image above).
However, the term "six axis" has appeared frequently in Sony PR (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509be.pdf#search=%22six%20axis%20PS3%22), including multiple times in the May 8, 2006 announcement of the controller's motion sensing functionality:

The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability. So is this palindrome (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=palindrome&x=0&y=0) Sony's name for the PS3 controller? Why do they need a name for it? Xbox 360 has no name, just "wireless controller" or "wired controller" which isn't really a PR thing, just descriptive.

Awww now I hope they dont call it that. Either call it duel shock or friggin call it a controller.

<3 Palindromes! What a great advertising campaign Sony could do for Six Axis. It's pretty self explanatory, really.

Because its more fun. Nearly everyone knows what the PS2 DualShock 2 is called.

The Xbox controller was just "Xbox controller". They brought out a "Controller S", which was a smaller version and more ergonomic.

I still don't see the point, I never called my PS2 controller a Dualshock, it was just the controller!

I think we should name the controller "Tim".

Neither did dualshock when that first came out! Most of the quirky names sound, well, quirky to start with! Heck, even "Wii" is now just an accepted name in the gaming world

you guys do realise that 1up just pulled this NAME out of their ass right SONY has never mentioned anything about changing it from dualshock. Last name we heard from Sony was PooS.

They read a few patents and said hey this must be the name (AND THE WINNER FOR BEING A DUMBASS GOES TO.......)

don't believe everything you read as fact Sony called it PooS and Dualshock why is 1up taking it upon themselves to create news?

SIXAXIS looks like a great name. As G_H_D said before, it is a great idea to make logos. BTW welcome back man!
Seems like SONY are trying harder everyday to make PS3 better, even thought they have delayed it in europe.

a man, a plan, a canal, panama. that's my favorite palindrome.

P209, P(infinity sign)S is speculated to be the name of their network, not the controller. i like the name SIXAXIS. it's rather hard to say, unless you say it kind of fast... six' a sis... i hope they do use it, marketing wise it would go over quite well.

Curse you proper English speaking people and your eccentric words.

1)It can't be called Dualshock if it doesn't shock.

2) P <infinity symbol> S is the internal nickname for Sony's online service and a skit to the wii.

I dont really care for the new name, its a little awkward to say....sixaxis controller....sounds more like your discribing whats in it than actually giving it a name, but then again i guess that can be said for the dualshock too...
