View Full Version : Is "Zombies" getting too complicated??

I absolutely love Zombies on COD. I would go over to a friends place to play it on his 360 and was truly addicted to it. I ended up getting a 360 so I could play online with him and a few other mates. (Yes I know this is the ps3 section)
Der Riese and Shi No Numa are my fav maps of all time, and I'm sure a few others feel the same way. They had a basic objective, but were also set up so you could easily do laps if you had the correct weapons, or hold out in a particular area if you had enough ammo.

But then the new map packs came along.

Kino der Toten. This actually wasn't too bad, if a bit small, it was easy enough to do constant laps, but you had to be careful not to get too complacent if you wanted to get to a high round. A nice simple map.

Five. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this map as I think the characters are hilarious. But it was always too dark, very hard to see a lot of low objects that would end up blocking and trapping you. And those crawling zombies? Wtf was the point of those? They didn't seem challenging, just plain annoying! Sometimes they would be close so you couldn't see them in your field of vision and you'd wonder why you weren't moving until they killed you. God dammit.

Ascension. I think this is where it started going down hill in terms of enjoyment. (For me anyway) This was the first map where there were so many tasks to do. I was excited to try out Ascension for the first time, but quickly grew tired of it and opted for the older maps.

Call of the Dead. A George Romero inspired map? Holy awesomeness! But again, grew very tired of it very quickly. Looked up how to do certain things, (freeing the original characters) etc, but I feel that the Zombies mode is starting to lose its way. Theres all these easter eggs, and objectives to do which are enjoyable, but too far seperated from the point of the game. Build up a shitload of points, then get a crawler, and go and find all the easter eggs, and then complete the sub-objectives. And for what kind of reward?

Shang ri la. I'm sure everyone has at least watched it on youtube by now, and at first, again, I was excited to play. But there is so much to do and so much to figure out, I start to think, why not just make a complete Zombie game? Theres obviously a very entertaining story in the Zombie universe within COD, and I don't think individual maps are enough. I want a map, where the point is to mow down tonnes of zombies, have the characters spitting out witty lines, have plenty of lapping paths, and not be too damn complicated.

I think Zombies has gone from a simple, enjoyable formula, to something that is too complex to enjoy properly.

Maybe I just havent played the maps for long enough, but then maybe I just want to get into the game and enjoy it straight away for what it is.

I think Der Riese was perfect, I always end up going back to that map, and of course Shi no numa.

Anyone else feel the same? Is Zombies straying too far away from the original, simple formula? Is it getting too complicated to enjoy properly?

I know what you're talking about, and I kinda feel the same way as well. None of these newer maps hold my interest as well as Der Riese did/does.

you honestly couldn't have said it any better. Zombies just isn't what it used to be.. Der riese was a damn near perfect map.

I like your idea of a stand alone game, zombies aren't as prevalent on PS3. Although I like that they are taking it in different directions, I may not find them as enjoyable but eventually they may stumble on something great. Also seeing as how the newer ones do require a purchase, complication can extend the play life and by extension value. And like you put it you can always go back to the ones you do enjoy.

Yeah, I kinda agree. But I actually think Nacht Der Untoten might be the perfect map, if only it had perk machines and maybe the PAP. It was small, but awesome. The maps kept getting bigger and bigger and for some reason I don't find myself playing Zombies as much as I did on WAW, instead I play MP most of the time. I have barely touched Call of the Dead, it's just so big and something about those big maps just puts me off tbh..

too easy. only thing i hate is when i play call of the dead on ps3 no one has a fucking mic so annoying. shang ra la is too easy. all you have to do is camp the bridge. 2 watch front 2 watch back. i went to lvl 26 n shang ra la and stoped playing it. i really didnt like it. call of the dead is much better more spots to run cicuts. on xbox360 im at lvl 30 in call of the dead. would have went farther but when you have a weak link on the team drags everyone down.

one thing i hate.
STOP HITTING THE FUCKING BOX. i swear i have 4000 points the guy has 6000 he hit the box 3 fucking times when i didnt hit it at all and he ask me to open the fucking door. what a dick.

MP40 will last you untill round 10+.

The best (and will probably remain the best) zombie map was the original map World At War shipped with. What Treyarch should've done is keep that map and add better guns for Black Ops. These new maps (and even the ones that shipped with Black Ops) are way to complicated. It takes away from the core of the mode, zombie-killing. The first map was classic and it was fun, the only one that I consider to be fun in Black Ops is Kind Der Token (spelling?). I hope Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer made the maps more simple in their version of the endless co-op modes.

Yeah, zombies is wack now. It was amazing on WaW, but I think the novelty has worn off.

Zombies isn't bad, but it certainly has become more complicated. Nazi Zombies was initially exciting because nothing quite like it had ever been done before, and no one was expecting it. Here are my opinions on each zombie map:

Nacht der Untoten - The zombie map that started it all. Kept things low key, but added the random weapon box for added fun, replay value, and plenty of possibilities.

Verrückt - Took the original zombie idea and embraced it. Added perks to make the possibilities and variety of each round even greater, and the addition of power to create a new goal and somewhat of a direction for gamers in the zombie world.

Shi No Numa - The first "ambitious" zombie map. Added various locations, new transportation abilities, and a wide variety of other things like hellhounds to enhance the zombie experience. Made zombies more complicated, certainly, but catching on to Shi No Numa only took a bit of practice before players could understand the ins and outs of the map.

Der Riese - This map set the stage for what zombies would be like in Call of Duty: Black Ops. The addition of the teleportation device and Pack-A-Punch machine complicated zombies quite a bit, but generated tons of hype for Nazi Zombies. Der Riese did, however, have a tight structure to ensure that things didn't become too complicated.

Kino Der Toten - Displayed what a year and a half of work on Nazi Zombies could do. With beautiful scenery and the feeling that you weren't playing World at War anymore, Kino Der Toten was great at exciting players. The map was very expansive, however, but not so much that it was too complicated for gamers to understand.

Five - An interesting map that has several layers. Not a bad map by any means, but to some degree it may have added a bit too much (portals). Five is tons of fun for awhile, but can quickly grow old.

Ascension - This map was, in my opinion, great. The launchers, perks, and monkeys all complemented the Nazi Zombie franchise and was tons of fun to experiment with. By no means does Ascension reflect the initial value and novelty that Nacht der Untoten had, though.

Call of the Dead - The addition of George Romero was great... for five minutes. It quickly got old having to attempt to outrun and avoid the oversized man, and didn't really compliment Nazi Zombies whatsoever. It was fun for awhile, but I quickly found myself enjoying the older maps much more. George Romero wasn't a bad addition nor a bad idea, but it really warped the idea of zombies and made it both too difficult at times and outright frustrating.

Shangri-La - This map is quite the complicated one. It's by no means a bad map, but it's veered so far from what zombies initially was. It's grown very complicated, and the novelty is completely gone at this point in the game. There are so many factors that gamers have to consider at once now that it may be thrilling, but it can also quickly become frustrating and a bit too much thought for something that was initially simple fun.

I forgot I made this thread!

Interesting responses, the other night I was lucky enough to get into a lobby of Shang Ri La, with 3 other people who wanted to perform the easter egg. 1 person said they had done it before, it took us 3.5 hours to get through it all, to get the "Time travel will tell" (i think thats what its called) trophy.
Now, I had a LOT of fun doing this over that 3.5 hour period, BUT I kept thinking to myself, how in gods name did anyone figure this out? Maybe the guy who had done it before, rushed (lol) through it this time and there were clues that I missed, but my god, doing certain stages of the easter egg is mind boggling that people are able to figure it out on their own.
As I said, I enjoyed it immensely, (probably because at least 1 person knew what they were doing) but if I hadn't of chanced into that particular lobby, I'd say I'd be playing that map for a very long time and never have gotten the easter egg trophy.

I'm really keen to do the easter eggs for Ascension and Call of the Dead now, it's just finding the people who know how to do it. I could look at a guide but would rather do it with some people who already know. I know its similar, but different at the same time, hehe.

A separate Zombie game that explains the back stories is sorely needed. There is definitely fun to be had, but it's a different and more time consuming type of fun that needs it's own game.

I love all the maps, got really nothing to complain about. A whole game would be cool, like an apocalyptic COD, but still. The complicated maps are the best ones to play on as there are so many spots to get around. Small simple maps mean, if theres a big breach, your gonna get your ass trapped in a corner, and killed.
