Sony’s confirmed that it’ll launch PlayStation Vita in Japan on December 17.
The news comes from the company’s Tokyo Game Show press conference, which is currently ongoing.
Sony reiterated on stag that the WI-Fi SKU will cost ¥24,980, while the 3G version will be ¥29,980. NTT DoCoMo will be the 3G provider in Japan for the handheld, following a previous announcement of AT&T at E3 for the US.
For Japan, NTT DoCoMo will have two pre-paid options for the 3G version. You’ll get either 20 hours for Y980 (£8.09, €9.36, $12.74) or 100 hours for Y4,980 (£41.10, €47.54, $64.73).

A date like that would benefit VITA ALOT in the UK and US and pretty much every other country.

Wouldve been better earlier but oh well, the longer they hold off release the slightly less they'll lose. Theres so much software on it the chance of people buying a first party over a third party title is slim, so first party won't really make up the losses. Sony has to work hard and start some big franchises for Vita only to combat the massive third party titles.

I think it'll be sooner than that tbh, more like late January. The PSPgo was only a month later in Japan.

Sony also make money off third-party software sales. They are called royalties.

But not as much as they would off a first party title. So far the majority of games I want are third party, it was the same with PSP, they need to really push themselves this time.

Well firstly it is unknown which makes more money. Funding first-party games involves risk and sometimes projects end in failure and/or over-budget. Anyway who cares about that?
Third-party games can be exemplary (the best a given-generation has to offer in fact). I couldn't care less whether a great game is first or third party. A great game is a great game. I am happy that the Vita seems to be getting a lot of third-party support - that is a good thing not a negative.

For a gamer its a good thing, but I'm just saying first party games may end up being overlooked. All the big Sony devs are on PS3/PS4, so its not like its a PS2 situation where first party outshone the third party now and then. Sony Bend is on board though and Uncharted looks like one of the best Vita games so far so we'll see.

Yes there is always that conflict between first-party and third-party in terms of exposure and thus sales. But I think Sony can manage it. Their Worldwide Studios group is much much stronger now than it was in the past.
