All media downloads over the PlayStation Vita's 3G connection will be limited to 20MB, Sony has announced.According to Andriasang (http://andriasang.com/comye0/), an unnamed Sony Computer Entertainment rep confirmed the figure to Japanese outlet ASCII (http://weekly.ascii.jp/elem/000/000/059/59054/).
The 20MB limit means that, while you'll be able to access the PlayStation Store, you'll likely only be able to download Minis and system updates while you're away from a wi-fi connection, rather than full retail titles.
The Sony rep added that while this will definitely be the case at launch, there's a chance the bar could be raised further down the line.
Incidentally, that figure is the same as the iPhone 4's 3G download cap.

That's about normal for 3G connections (at least here in the UK) so if anyone thought they'd be downloading any full blown games or playing multiplayer gaming over 3G i think they'll be kidding themselves.

We've known that you wouldn't be able to download games, or play multiplayer via 3g for a while now. The 3g tack on is pretty much a joke...

Really? I didnt even know AT&T had a 20mb cap on file size. That's fuckin' retarded.

No no, you misunderstand. The file size that Sony will allow will be 20MB. So you will only see 20MB files, rumored of course. That even leaves out firmware more than likely. Basically, the only thing you're going to use 3G for is the social media aspects, and browsing.

Yeahhh, even if its false I don't personally see much of a gain by buying a model with 3G. WiFi ftw.

No online multiplayer? Is this confirmed?

Pretty much.

OP: It's kinda surprising they'd cap it at 20mb, but the 3g on Vita is clearly just something to update ur fb status with, or talk via mic on party chat etc. It's just a social tool more than anything

Not sure Sony's gone the right route with this at all...

But having said that, I was never attracted to the 3G model anyway. Mostly because I'm usually around places with WiFi and also my personal experiences with 3G have been dire

Everything here in the UK is capped like that on our networks.

Oh. I just assumed it was AT&T since the iPhone is limited to it as well. Still doesn't help the Vita situation lol.

Same! If I ever need a 3G connection on my Vita I'll just host a hotspot with my phone

Wow! No online multiplayer over 3G with a portable game console. Suddenly I don't give a damn about it's download limit.

This was completely expected by me (a low-figure cap). No-way are the 3G carriers going to allow you to play full multi-player online gaming and download massive GB's of data through games and videos. Policies like these are implemented across the smart-phone/tablet market also.

Maybe in the future one day. But it does not make the 3G model useless. The 3G is there for the 'always-on' social connected experience i.e. receive messaging updates and send messages back, update in 'real-time', take advantage of the 'near' application and perhaps surf the internet. It is useful in that regard considering you are not entering into any fixed-price annual contract.

the data plan should be 5 bucks or less. WHO WOULD BE CRAZY TO GET A DATA PLAN? From att of all people lol, for more than 5 bucks. You could get a 2gb plan for like 40 bucks. Sony and its mobile partners are fooling themselves.

I should be getting the WiFi version, so no biggie for me.

So there is really no point in the 3g model then. And of all people Sony shouldn't be the ones capping anything, it's the currier, and we're already at odds with them for data and speed caps as it is. The fact that they are still with att of all people at this point is puzzling too.

BoyBettaKnow
11-03-2011, 13:28
Nope, i don't see the point in it any way - most smart phones can create wi-fi hotspots so i don't see the need to have two separate contracts especially one just for the Vita.

Nitey
11-03-2011, 13:48
Yeah exactly. I don't think the 3G version will do as well as they hope, it just doesn't make a lot of sense in paying for another sub on top of a phone sub/contract for most people

Not that I was even considering getting a 3G Vita, because as mentioned by others I'll just Hotspot my phone. I hotspot my phone for my Moto Xoom all the time while on the road. I use on average...

Will you be able to play others on wifi connection? (Excuse me if this is a stupid question, I am sort of a newcomer to gaming, but I plan on buying a Vita and I like MLB the Show. Will I be able to play other people online?)

Yes, that's the only way you'll be able to play others online, via wifi.
