Although I really like Nintendo (I'm a fan of Metroid/Zelda and my favorite console growing up was the SNES), I really don't see the point of making an in-between generation console. To tell you the truth, I'm not fully convinced that the tablet controller will make gaming funner. I think it will be annoying to look down every now and then and away from the screen. I'll probably get shot by the baddies doing that. Also, they say that the games can be streamed onto the tablet controller while someone is watching TV. What happens to the part of the game that was only displayed on the tablet? Where does that go if now the tablet screen is streaming the main game screen? I think my hand will also hurt after playing for more than a couple of hours holding a big controller like the Wii U controller.

Hope they make some last minute decisions regarding the console, or at least decide to develop Nintendo games for other consoles (like Sega).

Nintendo has to get its shit together. 3DS is a fantastic machine hindered by some stupid, stupid, STUPID design and marketing decisions. $250 at launch? Check (although I bought it when it was this expensive). No second analogue? Check. Region locked machines? Check.

They just can't come out every month with add-ons and peripherals to undo their mistakes. Please Nintendo, for all you're worth, make the Wii-U worth our time and invest some time and money to design a great machine from the get go.

This. Rep for you.

If the Wii U is just like the Wii, not even on par with the competiters' consoles, then expect it to be another secondary console. What I mean by secondary console is it won't be the main consoles in people's homes, it will be more of a bonus.

Not very surprising. Nintendo pumps out cheap hardware at a high price to bleed its loyal fanbase.

You guys remember when Nintendo used to be cool? Good times.

Yeah, I'm not investing in this at all.

I'm inclined to agree. The WiiU has not impressed me at all. It's exactly the same as current consoles if you ask me. It's far too late in the game for it to be released. The next thing released by Sony and Microsoft will be next gen. If they go the WiiU route with their hardware however.....I will be highly highly highly pissed off.

Yeah, and it doesn't help that the developers are having problems with the hardware, and I do not mean coding, I mean its FAULTY. Especially the WiiU screen controller, and it seems it may be subpar to the PS3 from some disparaging remarks I have seen lately.

Basically the Wii was a 6.5th gen console and Wii U is 7.5th gen, so yeah I agree.

Wow long time ago that, takes me back...

It's just a more next gen than what we have now

Having to look down at the screen would probably take you out of the experience, IMO.

It's a shame that I may have to get this console if I want to play the next Smash Bros. competitively.

I actually think the Wii U has the chance to be a near-flop like the 3DS was. Because I'm not sure if consumer will see a major leap forward. I think some good software can help propell it tho. It would be nice to get back to the days of when console launched there was that one must have game that came with it, or launch the same day.

I think MS and Sony are licking their lips. Just waiting to slash their console by $50 dollars before the wii u launches.

Indeed. 3DS didn't sell mainly because it had close to no games at launch. Once the games start to roll in, I'm sure we'll be seing a lot of hardware sales. Took Nintendo 6 months, 1 dual analogue accessory and a big price drop. Hope they learn from their incompetence.

Makes me wonder who I should believe an analysts who has very little knowledge of the Wii U outside of hearsay or developers like Vigil, EA and Crytek who have been praising the platform for various reasons for some months now. It's already ridiculous enough that such a person who isn't "in the know", an analyst no less and Pachter at that, has the gall to call anything next gen or not after the debacle regarding most of his predictions this gen especially regarding "Wii HD". Seriously, now.

This. Why buy an updated Wii with HD visuals when you can get something along the same lines insanely cheaper with far more content? As usual, Nintendo is banking on their loyal fanbase to pull them up on that pedestal.

I can tell you right now, if Sony or Microsoft pulled some shit like this, I'd be done with them in a heartbeat. You don't gimp your hardware just to make a quick buck and slap your fans in the face.

I suspect MS and Sony (especially Sony) would be torn asunder if they pulled a 'Wii'. They simply don't have the massively overloyal fanbase to keep them afloat, and they don't have the resources to penetrate the market Nintendo practically owns. If they do go casual, it won't be with the flip of a generation.

Sonys loyal fanbase is one of the reasons they're still in this industry after the PS3 launch, they probably have the biggest fanbase out of the 3 by quite a bit.

Well it's not like Nintendo created the Wii just to make a quick buck, either. It was a risk on their end to push out a console that essentially runs opposite certain traditional norms in the industry and even then they weren't making massive bank off the hardware from the start. The Wii wasn't a guaranteed success and you can bet a lot of Nintendo fans probably wouldn't have jumped on as early as they did if the only big well known first party title, Twilight Princess, was kept Gamecube exclusive.

Nintendo's fanbase is there because of Nintendo's software. As we saw with the 3DS, if the software hits aren't there that they expect, then they won't bite. By that same token, I'm sure if Sony or MS pulled a similar strategy as Wii, there would be members of their fanbase that would buy their console provided the games they enjoy continued to made for them.

Nintendo's hardware ain't shit. And if it wasn't for Zelda, Mario, and Metroid, I wouldn't give a damn about them and never touch there shit consoles.

As a matter of fact ima borrow a Wii just for Skyward Sword, but I will praise the day when Nintendo stops making hardware and there long franchises start going multiplat on other consoles.

Skyword Sword on PS3? I'm all for it!

So basically if it weren't for the franchises that help define Nintendo you wouldn't care for them? I guess it's fortunate then that they indeed have those franchises that help define who they are. ;)

But seriously speaking, all the ranting aside, so long as Nintendo's properties continue to be sought after they'll continue to be in a position where there is no need to resign to being a third party developer especially after such a lucrative generation thanks to Wii and DS.

IMHO the best thing that could happen to Nintendo (from a gamer's point of view) is for it to go broke...
hear me out. If they go broke on the HW department and stop doing consoles then they can do games (like Sega) for other consoles. I love several Nintendo games but I don't really like how they conduct their HW/Console department since after the SNES days.

Maybe that's just me... who knows.
