I would like to either get a laptop that is good for gaming as well as school/other needs, or a cheap laptop and a desktop that would be used for gaming. However, I would like the price to be as close to $1,000 as possible. Any suggestions? I would like to have a laptop for the portability, but maybe I should just get a desktop for now?

Two options that I was kinda looking at are the New Dell XPS 8500 desktop and the Alienware M14x Laptop.

me personally.. if you want to game get a desktop and upgrade as it becomes necessary.
just get a cheap laptop off craigslist or something if you're just using it for the web and writing papers.

Do you think the Dell XPS 8500 desktop might be a good choice? It's not meant for gaming, but it has good specs...

it depends, if you're one of those 120fps gamers then the GPU isn't sufficient.
AMD 7770 is an awesome card imo ;)
in fact, i previously recommended that model to anther forum member

I think you will get more bang for buck if you went with just a gaming laptop n this instance.
Buying both a laptop and desktop will compromise the power of both.

I'm not really that kind of gamer. I don't play really hard core games either. Things like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, and Civilization V.

hmm, the AMD 7770 that comes in those is quite a decent card. it runs crysis 2 max at 30fps ;)
im not one of the 120fps gamers either, i cant see the difference past 30

If you dont experience over 30FPs then you will not understand it, 100+FPS not only looks smoother it also feels smoother but if using controller you might not notice it as easy because thumbs dont offer the dexterity of an arm+ wrist + fingers can.
7770 will chew through TF2no problem.

must be all those console games i play then :snicker
high frame rates show when animations are crap ;)
since im not a First person shooter pc gamer (i prefer RTS) high frame rates only serve to annoy me. take Dragon age. i force highest SSAA to get 30fps, as the animations in that are really bad.
the 7770 with an i7 (or i5 for that matter) will more than suffice for gaming and home use. you'll run most games at their highest setting and get ~30fps
all Unreal powered games will run at max with 50-60fps.
Halo on PC is the same all the the physics is 30Hz (xbox port) so player animations look jittery and flicker same with vehicles its nto a fault of the framerate its a fault of the developers.
