Isn't the WiiU only very slightly more advanced (in some cases, not so in others) than the 360/PS3?
http://www.examiner.com/article/wii-u-final-retail-specs-reportedly-divulged-by-developers
I'm sure that the PS4/360 will be a significantly bigger leap than the current gen consoles so that guy's friend is definitely dreaming.

Meh. It's all about the games.
Why do you think people still talk about the SNES, Dreamcast, and PS2? :)

Ofcourse its about the games, and sony has the most of em :)
I think it's like some of your have pointed out already, kinda of obvious and expected that the PS4 will be more powerful since it will be released 1-2 years after WiiU possibly.
That was a funny reply coming from, Yoshida.

It would be a shambles if the Wii is only slightly more powerful that current gen.
They launched when home graphics card technology suddenly jumped into the stream processor/ Cuda core territory.
Now Nintendo should be able to get a graphics card in their system at least twice the power for not much at all.

Nintendo should have waited and jumped into the real next gen with Sony and MS. If they were confident enough in their brand then it shouldn't have been an issue. They will be exciting and shiny for about 9-12 months then be relegated to technical inferiority again.

I think where it really matters Nintendo have shown despite having a weak console they can make some of the best games e.g. skyward sword.
What is letting them down is that their 3rd parties don't sell and they end up with virtually zero third party support other then crappy party cash ins.
If this happens to Wii-U as well then they could be finished.

I agree, but imagine if Nintendo was getting the same parity 3rd party games that PS4/720 will get plus their IPs at that level. Imagine 8th gen Zelda lol.

I wasn't trying to imply that Nintendo had more games. It's the other way around. While Nintendo continues to release sequel after sequel to their biggest franchises, Sony creates new fun and interesting IPs. The likelihood that the PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the Wii U is just an added bonus.

The problem with that, though, is Sony and MS are probably going to cost more and take a loss when they launch. Nintendo has always, with the exception of the 3DS now, gotten a profit from their consoles. And the Wii is all but dead and hardly making them any money now. Who knows if the 3DS could keep them afloat for the next year. And keeping the system in line with the others wouldn't necessarily help them with 3rd parties. Look at the Gamecube.

Wii U could use third party however it doesn't need it to survive they can survive on their own IP's

I don't know. I still think Nintendo 1st party in gen 8 standards would bring a lot of people in. They should stop playing it so safe lol. They were boasting about all the money they had a month or so ago, said they could afford to bleed for quite some years before going bust. What do they do? Play it safe, again. Nothing would send a stronger message to enthusiast/hobbyist (aka core) gamers like us on this forum, than Nintendo releasing a true 8th gen console showing they've got the balls to go at it with Sony and MS. Nintendo would do well there I think. This is another aspect I appreciate about Sony...It understands you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. :D
The dudes friend might of well said "My friend said the PS3 was going to be more powerful then the PS4"
Well that was a stupid question to ask, and so what was the point of this topic? We all know the Wii U is only slightly more powerful then current gen consoles, so of course PS4/720 will be quite a bit more powerful

The last time nintendo went head to head was with the game cube and it didn't go well. Idk if they will ever try to be the most powerful and I for one don't think they would ever need to again.

That didn't stop the wii from selling a shit ton of consoles. People liked the wii because it was innovative and cheap. People will love the new controller so it's going to sell well again if they can keep the price down. These companies are in the business to make money. Sure they want to please their fans, but money will always come first. If current ps3/360 games can be ported to the wii easily, you will see a bunch of games being made within it's first year, which will help to move more units. Personally I don't like the Wii, and I have plans on buying the WiiU, because most of the games are catered to children.

Wii U has some good looking games being available at launch...if they can get sport games then I'd get them for Wii U instead of my PS3 I would like some confirmation from nintendo since I'm planing on buying 2k13 for PS3. If Wii U will be out a couple weeks after that game is released and its available for Wii U then ill just hold off and get it for Wii U.
Next gen I plan on having 2 consoles anyways like this gen (wii and Ps3). I expect a significant power difference between Wii u and PS4

Look at Super Mario Galaxy 2. That thing is visual porn. Amazing graphics and some of gaming's best art direction. I run it via emulation at 720p and I can't believe that its a Wii game
No doubt wii u will blow away gamers when it comes to first party games.

A game's art direction doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the overall power of a home console though. And even then, it's not just about the visuals but what you could put in your game and how much. Larger worlds and more realistic A.I. should be a high priority for video game developers, in my opinion.

Those are only relevant if your design requires them. Otherwise, yeah art direction =/= power.

In my opinion, a good game is one that is fun to play and a joy to look at. I trust Nintendo's first party games will once again be among the best next gen.
But I also think Nintendo are going to be screwed for quality 3rd party titles after 1 year. We are going to end up with crapware which will ruin them.
Nintendo didn't have the awesome hype show like the E3 before Wii's launch this time to give them that fun, cool must have image.
I think this gen is going to be between PS4 and xbox.

It all comes down to how the Wii U's tablet controller is going to be utilized kinda like when the wii mote was first released.
Until we know the power of the nextbox and PS4 hard to say how much more powerful they will be than Wii U however third party is needed for sony and xbox more so xbox.. However Nintendo has plently of AAA titles they can throw out there so I'm not too worried about the games with nintendo the tablet controller is what I feel is crucial to the Wii U's success. The concept is great I can see myself using it for sport games party games and a zelda HD game.
Why people say the Wii was a failure? Who knows people lie numbers don't...Never in the history of video games has the most powerful console sold the best.

Nintendo is going to be Nintendo. They're gonna be fine. I think alot is going to play out like this gen. Nintendo won't have the record breaking sales that the Wii had, but I think the system will sell regardless of the lackluster E3 showing. But I think with a more traditional type of controller, 3rd parties may be more inclined to port over more games. Nintendo will never be a major 3rd party seller like Sony and MS are. But they don't need to be.

The portable gaming market expanded.
Derp.
On a serious note, Nintendo spanked Sony. Regardless, Nintendo has been forced to step up their game because Sony is around to keep them on their toes.

Sony has been the only tru gaming company that has given Nintendo any competition since 1989 so Kudo's to sony for that with the PSP hopefully the vita can pick up steam and make this gen of portable console interesting! Vita IS the most impressive tech ever in portable sector hope it gets the chance it deserves
