View Full Version : what is your favourite and most hated accent?
my favourite would have to the south african one. it's sounds so call and more english then the english, indian english is also cool and unique
i hate the australian english that paul hogan talks with and steve irwin(R.I.P) honestly no one talks like that here
hating on anothers accent is a bit racist dont you think? well i love how japanese talks, its similar to spanish if you really pay attention, a bit similar but not the same.
well i am australian so i can say i hate that particular australian accent. i live in western australia so our accent is a bit more well posh, e.g. we dahnce instead of dance like other australians and americans, theres not so many famous western australian people so no one outside of the australia even knows what we sound like :(. i suppose the closest is nicole kidman. west australian and south australian accent is quite similar and does no sound well as flat our country like steve iwins. but even if i said i didn't like another countries accent e.g the welsh accent i don't find it racist it just means it's not pleaseing to my ears. it doesn't mean i'm racist

I didn't even know there were different Australian accents?:suspect:;)
my favourite would have to the south african one.Which South Africa accent, there's many (assuming you're talking about english)?
There's the "European" South African accent
There's the "Afrikaans" South African accent.
There's the "Cape Coloured" South African accent
There's the "Indian" South African accent
Then there's all the other national languages (e.g. Zulu) which all have their own distinct accents when using english.
I'll assume you're referring to the European version.
i know i think i meant the ones that the whites speak cos thats all i have heard. i think i mean european
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varieties_of_Australian_English
here is the link for people who didn't know australia has different accents only really 3 (4 if u include aboriginal english) i speak cultivated english, lol i didn't even know the name, which only 10 of the population speaks in areas like S.A and W.A, general being the biggest, and then theres broad.......................annoyingly many ppl outside of aus think this is how we all talk
Do not double post~AJJets107
accents are fine, but not being able to speak proper english does my head in.
we let people into our country, the least they could do is learn our ****ing language.
it OD's me when im at work and some immigrant comes in asking ****ing questions in another language, and then looking at me like im the devil when i dont know what the **** he or she is talking about

haha my favorite accent is the Australian one, theres a kid in my government class who is a exchane student he talks so cool.
I hate southern american accents they piss me off.
My most favorite accent has to be japanese accent. Most hated is mine, the taglog filipino language. It sounds like shear jibberish when middle aged women start gossiping about other people's families and such.
My favourite accent is the irish accent its just so cool. and my most hated is the liverpudlian accent. Damn you scousers ! (sorry if i offend anyone)

I had an Irish teacher once and he sounded funny after downing some liquor before class!!:) Aren't the Irish suppose to be good in handling their alcohol?
We all have accents. They all suck. End of the story

I can understand where you're coming from as some people I know have really thick scouse accents.
I LOVE the Yorkshire accent. Freddie Flintoff may be a binge drinker but he's my ideal man! :)

I hate the british accent when men speak it, but ladies can use it as much as they want, i think it's kinda sexy.
Hell i like to imitate accents:spanish, british, jamaican, japanese, french,g erman, russian, australian(the dundee one i guess) and so on.There is no worst.
hating on anothers accent is a bit racist dont you think?
No, hating others because of their race is racist.
French women have really sexy accents when they speak in English, I love it. I don't like Australian accents much (Sorry Aussies) but they sure can play a good game of cricket (if that makes you feel any better).
I hate the british accent
Which British accent? Scouse, brummie, ****ney, pikey, welsh, scottish, tyneside or the stereotypical posh British gent?
I'm a scouser, but I havent got an extreme accent. Its kind of a mix between Michael Owen and of a lesser extent, Jamie Carragher. There are many kinds of scouse accents depending on whose speaking. Some people sound awful, but I also think people with strong accents like Carragher are great to hear. One thing I will say outright though, strong scouse accents on girls is the most awful thing ever.
I think the geordie accent is quite similar to scouse. You can listen to someone speaking with a strong accent and think its good, but then someone else will open their mouths and it sounds horrible.
UK accents I dont like: ****ney, bristol, welsh, bradford, brummie, or scotish.
Other accents: Southern US, military type accents. Japanese speaking EngRish.
Accents I do like: Irish, wolverhampton, geordie, french (women only,) Chinese, Australian, South African. Russian is one of my favorites, my dads chess friend is Russian and he comes to visit sometimes. Its great listening to him.
I love that accent I got. The Urban northern accent. I have a Detroit Accent.
The one I have the most is the british accent. OMFG

People keep saying that they hate the 'British' accent, but Britain is comprised of England, Scotland Northern Ireland and Wales. There isn't a single accent that can be called 'British' that amalgamates these countries.

Britain is like America: There are lots of different accents within the country. I can't speak for the UK, but the US has A LOT.
You have the annoying twang of the southies, the silent "r" for Bostonians and New Englanders. The Wisconsin / Midwestern accent (hard to describe). The New Yorker (talk to an Italian-American from the Bronx and you"ll know what I'm talkin about). I could go on and on.
Speaking of myself, I sound like a cross-between a North-Eastern and Mid West. You can't really pin point it. It sounds general but a Brit told me I kind of sound like I'm from Chicago.
My favorite accent: British (although sometimes I can't understand a word)
My least favorite: Canadian (sorry Nucks but I can't stand it! The "Eh's" are annoying!)

No Ireland is not apart of Britain. We had an 800 year war full of rape, murder and pillage to make sure of that. Who teaches you Geography?!
As for my favourite accent? Ehh Spanish probably(chicks in particular, quite sexy!).
Most hated would be Indian, don't mean to be offensive but it really annoys me.

I dont really hate accents so Im just gunna say which ones I think are funny.
(yes I realize some of these are stereotypical)
British Accent = Ello ya bloody wank, come into my jolly good pub and we'll watch monty python.
Jamaican = Ayye der hows it gowen man?
American Ebonics = Sheeeit. Fo' shizzle, my nizzle! (anything a rapper would say)
Australian accent = (insert Steve Irwin quotes)
American Ebonics = Sheeeit. Fo' shizzle, my nizzle! (anything a rapper would say) plus lean back, goin down, hyphy, crunk, you smell me (E-40), etc.
So true, do you believe ebonics is adding to or destroying the american language?

Depends on how you look at it. I don't see it as a problem. I think it adds a unique culture but ebonics is frowned upon in the proffesional world. No one is going to hire someone that says, "I am da shiznit biotch. Hiya me before I bust a cap in yo ass."

Well, I guess its some sort of addition. But its such a stupid addition that it is destroying the American language for the young people who live in the ghetto.
I mean some people here in America really have a hard time speaking proper english, all they can speak is ebonics. So its destroying proper language. I can only imagine how frustrated english teachers are when some of their students can only speak ebonics.
But I guess some ebonics words might make an appearance in the dictionary some day.
If yo b!tch ass cannot rizzle my postizle because you only speak crunk ass ebonics, then go to www.gizoogle.com (http://www.gizoogle.com) to transizzile.
oh i like lebonese accents they actually sound similar to french, but i hate the leb-aussie accent tho. and the way they talk it's like "hey bro, whatcha doin bro?" they say bro alot. my favourite accent from britain(yes as ppl have said there is more then one like australia and the U.S) would have to be the ****ney cos thats where the "broad australian"(NOT AUSTRALIAN I SAID) accent comes from except it sounds cooler. p.s. sorry about the whole australian thing it's just that i hate that people think we all sound like dundee/irwin

I know there's separate Northern and Southern Irelands, isn't one part of the UK and one independant? If so technically both of you are correct.

Okay it breaks down like this. The full name for the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Which consists of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. That's what all Brits should know, for everyone else I'll let you off.
Ireland is divided, Northern Ireland is included as part of Great Britain, and Ireland (central and southern regions) is independant. Also of note Ireland have adopted the Euro where as the UK still have Pound Sterling, so we have different currency.
Anyway my favourite accent would have to be Italian.

I know. They sound so wise and smart with that accent.
And old white women think all black people are gangstas.
ebonics is how gangsta african americans talk. what about the aboriginal tongue clicking language? it's the only one outside of africa that uses clicks. it's called Damin but it's only a ceremonial language register used by the advanced initiated men of the Lardil and yan**** tribes. so basically it is a language within a language. One of the clicks in Damin is actually an egressive click, using the tongue to compress the air in the mouth for an outward (egressive) "spurt".

I like the American general accent best, to be honest. Also I think the Boston accent (i.e. Mayor Quimby) is kinda funny, i love it. I love the Germans trying to speak english, where everysing ends wit ja? Ja?
I don't like the Scottish accent. Or the Welsh accent, which isn't saying much for us since they are basically our Celtic ******* children :D

Oh.
That reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Lisa is lost and there are these two germans playing chess, and when they speak in an angry mood, the subtitles say, "Good move" and "Wanna play again?" and at the end they're like, "Checkmate." and the other guy flips the table over and says, "Great move. Let us play another!"
I love indian accents. More as humorous than actually enjoying to listen to them talk.
And I don't really like Russian accents, they always pronounce every little letter in a word.
I have a soft spot for the female Irish accent, although a luscious Australian female comes a close second! My most hated is that of the male species that come from Liverpool (UK)...just something about it that doesn't sound right!

Ouch that hurts my ego. One annoying accent is Korean. You tell them one thing, they say another. The problem is that the Koreans I have talked to hate to be corrected i.e. "That's one oda of flied rice, babaque tick, and one deium soft link, anyting else?" Yeah, you making it hard for another Asian to understand you. (Didn't mean to offend anyone so don't get upty okay?);)
Any of the Europeam accents are sexy, especially coming from a female waiter, tour guide, police officer.....

That idiotic australian accent does not in anyway represent the majority of australia accents.
I absolutely hate the Long Island accent (and much of New York's accents). Even though my old roomate was from there. They just try to sound so much like Italian mobsters when they're nothing like that.
I like Russian, Polish, and Irish the best. (I'm Irish, my gf is Polish, and I can do a wicked drunk Russian.)
And I happen to enjoy the African clicking, especially when used in Southpark.
I don't know if this counts as an accent, but the african "tongue-clicking" think is funny. :lol:The tribe that use the "tongue clicking" are called the san (better known as the bushmen).
And it's not really an accent, it's more an individual dialect.
An accent is generally differences in the same language (e.g. a person from Manchester will speak a different "form" of english to a person in London who will sound different to a Russian talking English and they all sound different to Americans and even Americans from different regions sound different etc etc).
As the san aren't really widespread (and there aren't really that many of them either) they don't really have different regional "accents", it's their language and that pretty much it.
Of course one of them speaking english would have an accent ... but they wouldn't be using the clicks any more.
Haha. Im an asian WITHOUT an asian accent. But, out of asian languages I hate the nasal ones the most.
What do you mean by nasal ones? Please enlighten me.
