View Full Version : Revolution Controller ‘Looks Like a Wavebird’

Several credible sources have posted new snippets on The Big Question tickling the games industry right now. What the controller for the Nintendo Revolution actually is.

One post surfacing on respected industry nose-tapper forum Gaming Age matches recent speculation which suggests that right now, developers are working with what appear to be modified GameCube WaveBird controllers.

I got a chance to take a quick look at the current Nintendo Revolution controller prototype today--but unfortunately, no chance to take pictures. At first, I thought it was a WaveBird.

That's because it looks just like a WaveBird, except that the GameCube face button scheme with the big A, small B, and X & Y kidney shaped buttons has been switched out for four small round buttons in a cross configuration, i.e. the traditional SNES/PlayStation/Xbox setup. I believe the button colour scheme used on the Revolution prototype is as follows: X (top) button = indigo, Y button = yellow, A button = green, B button = red.

Instead of the "Nintendo GameCube" logo in the across the centre of the controller, it said "Nintendo Revolution," using the same GameCube font. The analogue sticks were placed in the same locations as on a GameCube pad, as were the shoulder triggers. Keep in mind I only got a brief look at an image of the controller (5-10 seconds) and it was a top-down view so I couldn't see what was going on on the bottom side of the pad.

I was told that it'll evidently be wireless by default and no highly rumoured special functions like gyroscopic technology or touchscreen pads were currently implemented or had even been hinted at by Nintendo. Also, "this is just a prototype, sometimes they change a lot before system launch, or sometimes, like in the case of the N64, the prototype was nearly the same as the final controller."

I realize this is pretty anticlimactic since the Revolution controller is being hyped as the super-secret linchpin of Nintendo's radically different next console, and here is it looking like a WaveBird with a different button configuration. Just remember, it's possible that Nintendo could still be holding back a lot of functions from the developers until later in order to preserve the shock & awe...

At least this should at least put to rest all those bogus rumours about prototypes people have seen at developers' offices with touchscreens, gyroscopes, hologram interaction, etc. As it stands, this is all developers have access to.

This reflects recent chatter from the games development community which has, to a man, sworn blind to SPOnG (end every other media outlet as far as we know) that they have not been granted full access to what the Revolution’s secret is. SPOnG has been picking up reports that current development kit paper-based specs show pretty much what is outlined above, indicating that what more there is to come for the Revolution may well be independent of the traditional handheld controller.

Whatever the final big secret may be, it just better be really, really exciting.

every time i see another article on this i think: ' the controller again? '...nintendo surely hyped their system by not showing us the real thing but hype is vanishing and this time, to be honest, i am bored of not knowing how the controller looks!

edit: this is an add to my post, the picture of that controller

There's been so many rumors by now they've basically lost all meaning. It would be funny though if this did turn out to be the real controller. Oh how Revolutionary it is!

Well, Nintendo might get enough people interested in the controller alone, that is if people who don't use the internet to get their information even know what the Revolution is.

I was hyped for the controller for a while. Now i really don't care what Nintendo shows us unless the controller puts me into Virtual Reality and make all my dreams come true. Other then that, I've lost hope on Nintendo. Zelda to me, is there only hope for staying in this market. Mario is over exploited.

I really wish they would hurry up with it too. It would be funny if they have not even come up with a design yet and just go "I don't wanna do all that work everybody okay with the Wavebird?"

I think that by Nintendo not releasing any solid info on the Revolution and its controller, it could really hurt them in the end. If this thing doesn't completely turn the gaming industry upsidedown, then people are going to be severely disappointed in all this time waiting.

They keep saying that it'll change how people play games, but at the same time they say it doesn't have any radical features. This is a lot like over hype for a game (ex: Halo 2). People are only going to be disappointed cause it won't be able to live up to their expectations (which is exactly why i stopped reading and looking at screenshots of the Twilight Princess).

Well it definitely seems like Nintendo may be paranoid about not realising information because they're afraid that Sony and Microsoft may copy it and I think that's just silly, I mean if it's so "revolutionary" than why don't they just patent it?

So do you have an actual image, and not just a link to google?

The controller rumor I find the most believable, yet still could be a fake, is from the blog at http://theblogs.net/user/kingdea/

There is a track ball on the right side of the controller. Gyroscopes are built in. You can interact with the game by squeezing the pressure sensitive handles. It has a directional force feedback that uses the shifting of weight. The controller can heat up and cool down.

Thats going to be one expensive controller. Considering all this stuff there going to put into the controller. Gyroscope, Pressure sensitive handles, a Trackball, and i heard something about the controller getting warm and cold. Gyroscope mouses currently cost $90! Now i know the production cost of Gyroscope is nowhere near that price, but with all that other stuff there going to throw in, its gonna add up.

That sounds really neat, gyroscope and the controller heats and cools? How is that gonna work with all the electronics inside. Its probably has some super advanced rumble feature, pressure sensitive handles HMMMM and wireless to boot

Well well i must say that this controller does kick some serious butt HOWEVER no its not revolutionary and no I dont think its gonna save Nintendos butt.

Besides cant M$ and Sony just use the same ideas, not copy them but just use them.

Nintendo is going to show us something we didn't think at all. I mean look at the system they built. I sure no one saw that coming.

At E3 2007 Killzone was the one game that almost every Playstation gamer was looking forward to. Guerilla announced several key features from the game and even had a real time trailer to show off at the E3 conference, but finally some users get hands on.

N'Gai Croal of Newsweek got to have a hands on experience with Killzone 2 and confirms that the trailer was indeed real time and not CGI like 2005. The trailer that gamers saw at this years E3 was taken from the third level of single player campaign where Vektan troops along with Sev, the main character in the game, are witnessing an invasion.

Also confirmed was a cover system that is similar to Gears of War and inspired by the PSP version of Killzone. Players can approach a wall or any cover they can find and lean against the surface to take cover. Players then can lean around the wall or peak over the wall to take a few shots at the opposing Helghast troops.

Being a FPS game gamers would expect the peeking to be a bit complicated since the game doesn’t move into third person view like expected, but Sony highly suggests Guerilla has taken full advantage of the system to make it as user friendly as possible.

A Sony executive commented, "We expected it to be complicated... but our programmers took care of it pretty quickly,"
