View Full Version : October Sales Data: 360 underperforms

North American sales data just came in:
360 sales dropped from 260,000 in September to 218,000 in October.

Wedbush Morgan had orginally prediction 400,000 units for October, then revised this to 250,000, and now we see actual sales of 218,000.

This puts the 360 even further below the original XBox over its first year, especially as the XBox1 sold 265,000 units during it's second-Christmas October:
http://www.vgcharts.org/usaconscomps.php?name1=XB&name2=X360&type=2

Reasons for the drop? I won't speculate too much, but it should be noted that October was the first month in which Playstation 3 was advertised.

If this is correct, it has nothing to do with the PS3 but with the quiet releasing list.

Now that Gears of War is out and already pre-sold 1 million copies, I can bet you November and December will be the best months of the year for the Xbox 360.

Considering that these upcoming months should be the best sales months for Xbox, coinciding with the PS3 launch, I think the reason you bring has little to no effect in 360 sales.

Plus Rainbow Six - Vegas, Double Agent, COD 3 will help sell the system better on the next chart I am sure.

The next 2 months are going to be insane. People were probably saving up money last month so they could get the 360 this month or next for christmas. Just a theory!

September was what the retail industry calls a 5 week sales month, meaning they use 5 weeks of sales to work out the sales totals for September. October was based on 4 weeks of sales, and actually if you look on a week by week basis, the 360 has been selling better in the last 4 weeks than it did in the 5 weeks previously.

Sales for all consoles and handhelds look like they're down quite a lot in October compared to September, mostly for the reason above. I'm sure each of them would have sold more though if it weren't for the 2 new consoles on the horizon as well.

Now, the real worry in this sales data is the PSP. It's currently being outsold by the GBA, and the DS is selling nearly 3 times as much.

October hardware sales:
DS 360k
PS2 235k
360 218k
GBA 169k
PSP 130k

Drop in sales compared to September:
DS -43k
PS2 -71k
360 -42k
GBA -8k
PSP -23k

360 sales per week in September (5 week sales period): 52k
360 sales per week in October (4 week sales period): 54.5k

November will indeed by an insane month :)

That chart Dragata posted pretty much explains it all.

Why would you buy a console in October when you know that the real things are coming out in November?

I doubt sales will pick up that much, but I don't really care. 360 is old news to a lot of people, even the people at my school who know nothing about gaming are talking about "the new Playstation." As much as I love my 360, I don't think it can beat the Playstation brand yet.

11-10-2006, 18:19
Thanks for the 4/5 week info Dragata, that was very relevant.

But the sales data is not too easily dismissed -- 360 has still undersold the XBox1 over the first year, and it will need a massive spike in sales to even catch up!

Lol, don't tell me we're trying to divert the conversation towards psp instead of 360. Along with that maybe a nice cup of cocoa and a warm blanket might make the fans feel a little better :|. Hmm, that is very strange that they all made a significant drop.

what part of 5 week to 4 week did you not understand

if they sell 25k a week that would be 125k in one month and then 100k in the 2nd month. overall the # sold per day is about the same

Oh come on narutoboy, don't turn this into another petty bickering match.

I'm only displaying the figures and explaining why there was a drop for each platform this month compared to last that otherwise you wouldn't have known about.

And sure, the PSP has done well so far, but you can't ignore the recent hardware and software sales have faltered as the DS makes great strides in both those areas.

I think a lot of people are either not ready to move to next-gen at all or are waiting to see how the Wii and PS3 turn out.

I totally agree. I think it'll be a couple of years before mainstream, average consumers buy any of the next-gen consoles. I was looking through a toy catologue earlier that had a top 10 section for Xmas gifts, the only consoles in the top ten were PS2 and DS. In fact the PS2 was in twice, for the black and pink versions.

I've personally always believed that MS releasing the 360 a year before the other 2 was a bad decision with the potential to backfire. Last gen they released too late and now they've released too early. I'm glad they did release it early though 'cause it's allowed me to play games with better graphics for the past year.

WIth all do respect. Bickering matches wouldn't have to occur if certain factions stayedon topic and not try to divert attention somewhere else. There are "PSP sales falling" threads in the PSP section and discussion happens there. Why suddenly the interest to have them in a thread with this subject title?

I agree that you bring up a valid point about the 5/4 week difference in various months. The sales probably did about on par with Wedbush Morgan's prediction, unless their prediction was supposed to account for that already. Provided thats the reason for Microsoft missing the mark (set by Wedbush Morgan), then there's no real story/news here.

I apologise, I won't do it again. It wasn't my intention to divert the topic discussion at all, which was my post was mainly focused on addressing the issue of the 360 until I was picked on for my PSP comment.

Umm...there's no need to apologize really. The chart is good evidence showing(non-conclusively) why XBox360 sales appears to be under performing relative to Webush Morgan's prediction and why that is likely not the case. It's the other "oh look at how bad PSP is doing" topic that's quite unecessary to talk about here.

I agree.
November and December will be the months to watch...
Not to mention January 07, February, etc...
One of the things you notice if you look at PS2 and XBox1 sales in North America is that PS2 would continue to sell strong throughout the year, while the XBox1 had a lot of very very quiet months in between holidays and major software releases.

I have the feeling the real reason why it isn't selling well is the high cost of the machine, that's driving away the causal gamers a the moment. I don't expect this situation to get much better on top of the usual sales burst this year.
