I thought Blu-ray was more expensive?
check out the prices at www.hmv.co.uk
the HD-DVD's are game prices!
£24.99 for Superman 2?!
£29.99 for MI:3
I don't even want to know the street prices on them things
does anybody else think that the HD-DVD prices are a joke?

I don't know, but I saw somewhere that blu-ray price is £19.99. I actually a bit surprised when I saw the price. (i think it was amazon.co.uk) That's same as price of single disc Disney DVD.

ATM, HD DVD and BD movies are basically the same price on average, with BD having a very small price advantage.

Everyting Blu-Ray costs a bit more in general. I go Blu-Ray and HD DVD disc shopping about 3 times a month. I always get a few discs. The prices for them are somewhat similar (although when this all started BDs were a bit more expensive as a rule of thumb)..... although BD is still generally a bit more expensive (but not too much anymore) but will come down more as time goes on.

The newer Toshiba HD DVD players just came out, well the lower end model the A2, I have the A1 and ill stick with it because first reports of the new player suggests that its not actually any better picture quality wise, I love my A1 - it works very well and its great. Its cheaper though, Toshiba A1's and A2's are about 500-600 dollars. While good BD players are 800-1200 dollars. Thats a big difference for most people.

In the end, it will be kind of strange to see what happens. I dont like the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray discussions because in the end for a majority of titles they can and will eventually look identical. Exclusive titles that need more space on Blu-Ray will edge out HD DVD in some ways if more work is needed in compression with things like live concerts and stuff (lots of dark black sections, flashing lights, smoke and/or effects - it all makes more work to make it retain its over all quality).

In terms of price (which is where this topic should be anyway) they are very close with Blu-Ray being a bit more expensive right now. With the big exception of Superman Returns being cheaper on Blu-Ray than on HD DVD, although I liked the movie the over all quality doesnt scream HD.

how many times do you watch a movie 10 times or even 5 times? buying dvd's made sence cause they were under a tenner, the new formats make no sence compared to rental...

Some HD DVD's are more expensive because they are hybrid disc. One side DVD and the other side HD DVD, so keep that in mind if you are comparing prices.

I watch movies often, and I like to own this stuff, I hate renting.... besides with these new formats if you get scrathed discs they will work even less as good as scratched DVDs. I dislike renting DVDs for a reason and the same with HD DVD and BD.. I doubt ill ever rent one.

I am collector of Disney DVD, and maybe in future, Disney Blu-ray, so renting is not really my thing

You make a good point
but what sort of person would buy a HD-DVD for £24/29.99
if they don't own a HD-DVD player?
ppl would just buy the normal DVD version
and wait for the HD version to come down really cheap
and by time that happens they'll have a BD/HD-DVD player
its a nice idea but not a good one

From my experience they are about the same price and of course they differ surprisingly in quality. For example Kingdom of Heaven is $35 and looks amazing whereas the Fifth Element is $20 and is older and apprently more grainy.

Dude, Fifth Element almost looks better on upconverted DVD than on Blu-Ray! its terrible quality!

I bought King Kong on HD DVD (one of the best looking titles *so far* for either format) and it cost me 36 Canadian dollars, thats like 30 us!

Both have cheaper movies and both have expensive ones it seems.

well i think you guys need to shop around more :p i find they're about the same price nowadays.. in my opinion the only price difference between the formats are the players themselves now

Yes.... I mostly agree. They basically have their ups and downs in terms of quality and price.

The players on the other hand are quite a different story. The HD-A1 (which I own) and the newer A2's (which are same in Picture Quality, but the A2 has quicker load times and a few user friendly things added) are about the same price. You may be able to find the A1 for cheaper because it was an earlier model than the A2. I got my A1 for about 600 dollars. It was well worth it, its an amazing player.

The X1 and the X2 (not out yet) are both made my Toshiba ofcourse like the A1/A2s and they are more expensive, they are the same price as the Blu-Ray players. The X1 and soon the X2 both output 1080p unlike the A1/A2s (although it should be known this doesnt actually make the picture any better at all). But the biggest draw about the X2 is that it has more audio outputs than the A1 (the A2 unlike the A1 doesnt have the seperate channel analog outs).

Its well known that the idea of outputting a 1080p source in 1080i onto a 1080p HDTV is identical in quality as a 1080p signal into a 1080p HDTV. Thats why its kind of weird that they make the X2 so much more expensive. Oh well...

So the prices do vary but for their "flagship" model its the same price as a Blu-Ray player.

Here in Holland most Blu-ray movies are out for about 22€, which isn't too bad in my opinion. And as far as I know, HD-DVD isn't even out here...

In canada blu-ray is pretty cheap. They're usually around $5 more than the DVD version (24.99 vs 29.99) for new releases. A bit more for the older movies that just came out on blu-ray (~10$ more). Most flyers either have blu-ray only or both.

the price seems to vary, sometimes blu-ray movies are cheaper/more expensive and likewise for hd-dvd.

the prices of hardware are still on a average cheaper for hd-dvd though but blu-ray is making headway with phillips blu-ray players going for around $699 online and of course the PS3 which is now the cheapest and best blu-ray player currently available.

2007 will be the year this war is decided imo, if blu-ray takes the market by the neck and starts consistently bringing out hardware under the $600 range and the supporting studios for blu-ray aggressively bring out new titles for blu-ray (blu-ray has just passed hd-dvd with number of titles available) so that they absolutely dwarf hd-dvd with titles available then they will win. it doesnt matter what hd-dvd does imo, its all up to blu-ray if they either take the market or drop the ball entirely.

they have the support, they just need to bring price down and bulk up titles available.

Quoted for truth, and props to actually knowing something before running your mouth off.

The hybrid discs are made for HD DVD owners but gives them the versitility to watch them on their old dvd players in other rooms of the house or in their cars.

Other then those stupid combo DVD/ HDDVD discs, the current titles are priced the same (at least in my big box stores). The same goes on amazon.ca. Thats the only real place I shop for my titles...

Tre
Do you even live in the UK?
cause thats not how it works here
the more they sell the more the seller is willing to lower the price
cause the seller knows that the item will sell they lower the price to get more ppl that think its too much to buy it too
and if what you say is true then thats why amazon has put up the prices of serton Blu-ray movies;)

Look at play.com,

Blu-Ray: http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/NAVSUB/5-/RegionHome.html
HD-DVD: http://www.play.com/DVD/HD%20DVD/NAVSUB/5-/RegionHome.html

Most movies for Blu-ray are £18 or £14 whilst HD DVD are £18 and £15. Also look at MI3, on HD-DVD, £25 on Blu-ray, £24.00.

I'm keeping my eye out for deals whenever I can. The Buy.com/Google Checkout deal was amazing, and is how I got most of my collection. I've got about 65 Blu-ray and HD DVD titles, and didn't pay more than $15 shipped for the majority of them. :)

Sounds good over there, Blu Ray in the UK is no existant. Non of the top stores have Blu ray or HD DVD and i bet if you went up to any random guy in the street and asked him what Blu Ray was, he wouldn't have a clue.
