Robin Hood - 8/10

Was better than i expected... but annoying at how they obviously made the whole thing thinking about a sequel...

Enjoyed it to a point but found myself checking the clock a few times. Funny in parts and a good amount of head smashing + bow twanging. Not the worst film I've ever seen.

Visual Effects and Sound Design (forgot the exact name of that award) are the only realistic nominations.

What nominations did you hear about?

Some people were expecting it to receive a Best Picture nomination along with Avatar and District 9(the other Sci-fi movies), which might be a bit of a stretch.

Robin Hood - 7/10

I was kind of disappointed with the movie. I think having it rated PG-13 is what may have held it back. It's not that I'm all about gore, but imagine Braveheart as a PG-13 movie. It just wouldn't be as good. All of Ridley Scott's great movies (exception for Legend) have been rated R; Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, Aliens, etc. I felt that the new Robin Hood was going for a more gritty version of the story. I was expecting gruesome medieval battles and plotline.

Also the movie seemed a bit long.

The losers 7/10
http://vinayvasan.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/the-losers_poster.jpg

Yet another movie based off of a comic series. The losers has some very interesting characters and some funny dialog and scenes across the board. It is a movie in which you can turn your mind off and enjoy.

The bad things are stand out but only if you approach this film with serious intent (not recommended) the characters strife's are cliched, they are underdeveloped and underutilized, the plot twists you can see coming a mile away, the ending battle is nothing spectacular and there is a happy ending that leaves questions unresolved.

If you are the type that is incapable of enjoying a popcorn flick, you might as well subtract 2 more points. It is far from the worst movie ever, but also far from the best.

Well directed movie, not much going on but deeply personal and emotive. It technically shouldn't matter. They're different sides of the same event, but you may find a preference of which you think should be viewed first.

Memento - I've already seen it, but watching it again reminds me how awesome Christopher Nolan is! Everything in this movie all the way to the script: Script, Story, Acting, Editing, Lighting, Composition, Music/ambience are all superb.

9.9/10 - Since I'm being more formal here, I'll give it a more formal grade and a full 10 would mean its perfect, and objectively speaking no movie is perfect. Though I can't think of a way I'd change any aspect considering the context of the film.

Robin Hood 5.5/10

The movie wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The villain was pretty generic, no reasoning behind his motivations, nothing interesting happened throughout the entirety of the movie, and the dialogue was eh...

Little John was cool though.

Very disappointing movie to me. The acting from Sheen was good but the whole movie is utterly forgettable and dull and the dialogue was lala. After the first 20 minutes it fell apart, although there were still a few decent scenes to be found here and there.

There aren't a lot of movies I'm looking forward to seeing this year, apart from Inception and Tron Legacy, so I'm rating three old movies that I watched recently in the past two weeks.

One of them is the 2007 film adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, and overall I though it was a good movie. Some people might not like it because of its ending, but I thought it was different, so kudos to the director. My only complaint is that the weird phenomenon wasn't further explained... but whatever.

8/10

The other movie that I watched recently was the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I doubt many people have seen this movie, but if you're a fan of science fiction, you don't want to pass this one up.

This movie is one of the greatest films of all time, it helps if you also view the movie-documentary "Chariots of the Gods" before hand.

No need to beat around the bush, anyone that believes in Christianity will instantly give this film a big fat 0.

But for those willing to open their mind to other possibilities and those discussed in "Chariots of the Gods" will really enjoy this film, it has a lot of structure and is very well crafted.

I would recommend this film become mandatory viewing for all people of earth.

I actually thought the design of aliens sort of resembled an angel in a way. For all we know, those could be angels taking the kids in what we might call (as we know it from the Bible) an "ark".

Of those I haven't seen Green Zone (it's in the queue), but I'd say I agree ± 0.5 for all the others. I'd definitely give Alice the bump to 8.5 and I was kind of not into seeing Eli, but was pleasantly surprised (I'm kind of a sucker for post-apocalyptic Mad Max-ian type flicks).

I think there's an 8.0 movie in Wolfman with some improved editing (since it's a remake of a classic Universal monster flick, all of which were always nice and tight).

I thought Shutter was _beautiful_ even though the "twist" was pretty conspicuous from the beginning (the opening scene on the boat).

Wolfman needs a lot more than editing tweaks. The CGI was weak, the makeup was uninspiring, the fight scenes and overall violence was run of the mill and didn't incite any emotional reaction. It all stems from the "seen it all before" feeling and it DOESN'T DO ANYTHING BETTER. Only saving grace of the film is the terrific art direction, at times slick cinematography, and of course SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS. One of the greatest actors of all time, the man can take a ordinary line and give it unbelievable punch.

Green Zone was better than I thought it would be, no Bourne, but thoroughly exciting. Matt Damon is one of my favorite actors and I love the way Paul Greengrass directs action sequences. It's even more impressive that he shoots all of it on film.

Book of Eli: A lot better than expected, but it's style is counter productive to the grittiness of the characters and story. I also hate the CG use. You know I have zero tolerance for bad CGI... ZERO. You either find a way to do it real or you go get WETA or ILM. Double Negative does good work but they never really take on huge projects. I also didn't like how there was no real reason to Denzel's crusade, which might prove to be more of a knock on religion and it's ridiculousness, but I'm digressing. Gary's character had an agenda that made a lot of sense and Denzel was on this "blind" mission to restore faith. The film was way too pro God/Religion for me and seemed to not realize any of its faults, which maybe are too vast to fit into a 2 hour movie. Fine performances around the board.

Alice: Went into with super low expectations because 1) Am not a huge fan of Burton, though I like his creativity. 2) Am not really familiar with Alice in Wonderland. 3) Negative reviews. Came out of it very pleased. Thought it was rather funny, imaginative, and beautiful. The performances were good and I could see children absolutely loving it. It was so colorful and vivid, very pleasing film. Johnny was Johnny and Mia Wasikowska was fantastic as Alice. Helena stole the show with her big head antics.

Shutter Island: Marty doing a suspense B movie with a bigger budget than a 80s B movie would have. Not a huge fan of Leo, but I thought he did a rather fine job here as did Sir Kingsly. The film is going for the rough cut, kind of messy at times feel so I was a bit more lenient on it than others have been. Saw the bit about Leo being crazy a mile off, but the circumstances in which they reveal it were impressive. Heart wrenching ending, you really root for Leo's character all the way up until the credits roll.

From Paris with Love: ... do I really have to?

EDIT: Oh and I just saw Adventureland... stellar film. Saw Jessie Eisenberg in Zombieland before this, he plays the same exact character but does it well. Ryan Reynolds is still the man with the super awesome hot girlfriend(In real life) and I've been a big fan since Van Wilder. Now onto the big revelation... Kristen Stewart.

As some of you may know, not a big fan of Twilight. I get why some young girls like it, but I do not, not for me. Too much moaning about, the characters are weak, way too much melodrama for my taste. In Adventureland I saw the whole other side of Kristen Stewart. She was pretty, she was strong yet in need of support, intriguing, did I mention pretty already? I mean total 180 from what I've been feeling for her in Twilight. Proof of a future good acting career? IDK she doesn't seem to be really appreciative of her job and Twilights errr complains about it all the time. If she sticks to it though... she could be very very good.

I didn't care for Alice. I thought Burton could've pushed it for a crazier and more twisted feel, but instead (possibly because of Disney) they took the safe route and just made it a mainstream kids film. And I wish the story wasn't so tight to the Hero's Journey. It's almost verbatim which unless the other aspects rub you just right it feels overused. Unfortunately it didn't rub me the right way. Depp has a good performance but I just didn't care for the character. The cat was the best part since his character was always the more intriguing. Still the cat was better in the older Disney cartoon from what I recall.

I enjoyed Shutter Island. The story is well told and in a more intriguing way than other movies have done it (or close to). The performances make it believable enough that even if you think you have it figured out you may question it. I loved the psychological elements especially when the subtle cuts of memories come in without disturbing the scene its placed in the middle of. I also enjoyed the first scene between Leo and his character's wife. The whole memory is made to feel almost real with elements fading in and out. Furthermore the hot lighting was nice touch I thought.

This may sound farfetched, but Shutter Island was in a way a good prelim movie to Inception.

The Book Of Eli - 5/10

I was fairly disappointed with this movie. I went in not knowing what is was about and found it to be quite dull. There was quite a bit of action but the story (for me anyway) seemed to fall apart. I am not into the whole Bible scene so the movie just didn't catch my attention. The only reason it got a 5 was because of Denzel Washington.

I just saw it tonight and and other posts I've seen recent here is that people haven't really gotten into it. I only wish that it had been longer and that there was more 'stuff' going on with the story. War of the Worlds - 7.5/10 - It had some great cinematography and sound design. The story isn't bad, especially compared to most remakes. It's changed up from the original but I think it works it's just not great. My pet-peeves are with re-hashed dead beat father which is kind of annoying since many movies are willing to make the father look like the bad guy/idiot, but that's just my personal opinion. Also, the son isn't too bight either but he's an adolescent so its hard to argue with that, again mostly just a personal pet-peeve. Of course ILM does a nice job with the VFX.

(500) Days of Summer - 8/10 - A good and interestingly done romantic drama/comedy. Its hard to really call either a drama or a comedy since the movie right in-between. Of course, JGL pulls a nice performance. Btw, the girl at the end of the movie... nice upgrade :)

That movie *just* got HIGHLY recommended to me by a friend. Coincidence? I think not.

Toy Story 3 in 3d.

I'm giddy to see it. We've been watching 1 & 2 about 2-3 times a week with our 2.25 year old and she's been sitting through BOTH back to back without any problems. Trying to decide if I want to give it a shot (I think in 3D the glasses would be the first thing to go, so maybe see it in 2D?)

8/10

Thoroughly entertaining!

So awesome. Just rewatched it last weekend (hahaha, in fact, I just opened the BD of it I got for my birthday way back in March). It's a 9/10 for me, but I'm totally into the genre (and sub-genre I guess you could say).

War of the Worlds - 7.5/10 - It had some great cinematography and sound design. The story isn't bad, especially compared to most remakes.

You know, I almost don't even consider it a remake since it's sourced from a novel and several elements are actually _closer_ to the original source than the '53 movie. The family interaction was painful, but the visual (and audio) execution was pretty goddam outstanding.

(500) Days of Summer - 8/10 - A good and interestingly done romantic drama/comedy. Its hard to really call either a drama or a comedy since the movie right in-between. Of course, JGL pulls a nice performance. Btw, the girl at the end of the movie... nice upgrade :)

Saw this a couple of weeks ago, VERY good 8.5/10 for me (and so incredibly accurate in terms of relationship dynamics). JGL is a fan favorite around here.

Seven Pounds - 8/10 - Good movie with strong performances by Rosario Dawson and Will Smith. Really sad ending though.

EDIT:

Akira - 9/10 - The art direction is reminiscent of Blade Runner which hits my personal liking. Some of the establishing shots of the city/buildings are beautiful. For anyone who knows about animation knows this movie is a remarkable feat in that medium. The best part though is the story which has some deep meaning to it. The ending is a bit vague but it allows the viewer to read into it more and make their own conclusions. My only nit-pick is some of the dialogue/voice acting seems a little odd at times but that could easily be from the translation (I was using the English dub since I was eating).

Well, my 2.5 year old has about the shortest attention span a kid could have so it didn't surprise me. My 4 year old had no problem sitting through the movie and leaving his glasses on. I left my glasses off for about a minute to see what my 2 year old was seeing and the movie is still mostly watchable. When there are parts with a lot of depth most of the screen gets pretty blurry. Other times it looks almost normal.

I'm sure the 2d would be fine, but I enjoyed the 3d in the film. I figure I'll watch it a million times in 2d when it comes out on blu so I may as well catch the 3d version at the theater.

HP and The Half-Blood Prince - Don't feel like giving a number rating but basically the climax isn't much. This film is more of a bridge to the final act of the overall story. The one thing I did enjoy though was the cinematography was nice. The DP really pulled some good compositions.

Sadly the next movie won't much of a true 3-act movie either since it's broken into two films. It could still work but it'll probably leave the audience needing to see the final movie to fully enjoy the end.

Adventureland - 7/10 - The characters were more to my relation, but the story wasn't all that interesting. (500) Days of Summer spoiled me.

For that matter how did that show end if Angier doesn't appear right away?

probably ended the show with Angier disappearing and the audience being disappointed? is that what you wanted?

he set the show up so that he can frame Borden for murder and its the clone who went into the water tank, not the actual Angier.

So the actual Angier IS the Prestige, and the clones are the ones who ended up being drowned.

thats my thought anyways, Nolan's films always leave the audience thinking or coming up with scenarios ><

It contains some cheesy moments but for the most part it works, mainly because of Arnie and the story. Consider that a divorce!

probably ended the show with Angier disappearing and the audience being disappointed? is that what you wanted?

he set the show up so that he can frame Borden for murder and its the clone who went into the water tank, not the actual Angier.

So the actual Angier IS the Prestige, and the clones are the ones who ended up being drowned.

thats my thought anyways, Nolan's films always leave the audience thinking or coming up with scenarios >< I suppose the audience being disappointed doesn't really matter at that point, I was thinking that Cutter would have to deal with it (being the manager) so that would raise questions but Borden being framed is the answer. It's just that it feels like an inconsistency that Angier doesn't appear right away. Although I guess looking back at the hats and the cats, they didn't appear in the same vicinity as the machine either. When it comes to science fiction its hard to write things accurately since there's so many factors and as the audience we can only speculate how it should work out. There's lots of possibilities to how this could go, but I guess it works as it is. For Angier to set up Borden, he should know how everything should go and the fact of the matter is he doesn't know the ins and outs of the machine to know where he or a clone will end up. One will end up in the tank and the other could just pop-up on stage revealing the secret to Cutter and Borden right then.

Also watched Memento - 9/10 - hard film to get but brilliant once you doPersonally I think this is Nolan's best by far. Virtually perfect... I have yet to find a flaw. It really makes you think about the story.

Watched The Prestige again, this time with my parents. I think my above issue has been resolved. There's one thing I could question, but really the whole thing works. When Borden and Cutter find the tank, I noticed there was a cut to the audience showing Angier not reappearing. And to explain that I noticed when he does the trick before the incident Angier walks into the spotlight to be seen. So clearly he disappear if he wants to.

I love how Nolan plays with timelines. He uses the journals to cut back and forth within the story between the beginning and end. It's great how he can jump through through the story's timeline without labeling when, just proves how much skill he has.

I think the only movies he doesn't do his signature writing/editing in is the Batman movies, and that's probably because its adapted material rather than original ideas. With that said I think Inception will probably play with time in a similar fashion. Inception WILL be great, if not even better than that. Thankfully it hasn't hit me yet, so hopefully it won't feel too long till release.

I'll be watching Insomnia tomorrow. It'll be another great film in Nolan's library.

EDIT: Just checked Rotten Tomatoes and it has a 75% there, WTF? (The Prestige)

Insomnia - 8/10 - Not Nolan's best by far, but its still good. Mostly I'm not a big fan of murder mysteries since they usually all have the same formula. However, Nolan shies away from the usual cliches that make these movies normally predictable. Furthermore, it was nice to realize its more of a character piece rather than the usual story that tries to have good guy/bad guy twists.

Similar to his Batman adaptations, this doesn't have his signature style (at least not as much) since its not one of his (or his brother's) original ideas.

Memento is his best film because it's a character film and Prestige is as well to a lesser extent. Chris Nolan generally makes plot centered films and as good as they are, they generally aren't very emotionally moving. Plot films certainly don't win awards (part of the Sci Fi genre's issue at the Oscars). Chris has apparently fixed this plot vs characters issue to an extent with INCEPTION, but I'm not sold on Leo AT ALL.

It's too complicated". My stepmom said the latter of the two quotes which I coped with (barely) but the part that ****ES me off is when she'll praise movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still (REMAKE :bang:)

I refuse to rate the movie because I simply can't. As you might know, it's taking its cue from the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. One the one hand, the movie feels very slow and even dull for the first 60 minutes but on the other, the last thirty will literally shock you with their directness. Never did I feel as uncomfortable as within the last thirty minutes. It really makes you wonder what it must take to go and shoot your fellow school mates in the head with no sign of guilt.

Oh god yes a terrible movie, I think I posted a low score of it in this very thread too. The first scene sets the standard for the entire movie (you know the "behind me" routine) it didnt get a laugh until Danny Devito's lne when in that car right near the end which was a very good gag.

Now this was a film i had high expectations of and delivered tenfold. Robert Redford gave an absolutely stellar performance and Pitt was great. The storyline was really something else. Tom Cruise's best role IMO, he should stick to playing the villain more often. The film is shot entirely at night, and it tries to experiment with the noir look in a way. Excellent acting by Foxx and Cruise. Nice score, and nice overhead shots of LA. Also, nice to see the rumored Frank Martin (transporter) make a cameo in this at the start of the film.

The Book of Eli - It's tough to judge this movie because it blurs the line between personal opinion and objective narrative. So I'm going to side step critiquing the movie and instead I'll say that one thing i was surprised by was the production on this. There was some good cinematography and an interesting feeling of realism at times. Although there were also times when you can tell the green screen was behind the cast or the background was roto'd.

Predators - 7/10 - That's probably a generous score, but the movie was an improvement. It revisits the old cheap thrills sound and editing style but I don't mind that as they're trying to keep in line with an 80's flick. What's his face, who was some convict ripped out of his cell (wearing a prison uniform) was utterly obnoxious. Adrien Brody who stole the show should've killed him in the first 5 minutes if it hadn't been for a later Predator scene.

Fishburne needs to stay away from psychological roles. Steve Buscemi is the man for that.

I will say Topher Grace surprised me at the end, and there was a scene that I actually enjoyed.

Danny Trejo is killed by a Predator early on but the predator positions his body just so that you think he's wounded. The fun part is that his voice is recorded by the Predator with Trejo saying "Help me..." but the Predator is playing it back to lure them. Isabelle thinks she's putting him out of his misery by shooting him... afterwards the recording loops over... dun dun DUN! Nothing amazing but I was intrigued by that reveal

While I haven't read the books/novels, I enjoyed the movie very much. Even if it's only part 1 of the trilogy, it still feels like a movie that has a beginning and an ending. I can't say how that works in the books, but the translation to the screen seems really good.

Despicable Me was rather entertaining. The 3D was an absolute joke though... as usual. Half the film doesn't even seem to be in 3D (Yes I took the glasses off several times). The best usage of 3D came after the film was over. Those minions are HIlarious. Steve Carrell is one of the funniest people in Hollywood. He puts on this ridiculous accent for this character and it's incredibly entertaining. The relationship with him and the three orphan girls (all of whom are funny in their own right) works very well.

The Last Airbender.

First off, I love the show. I've seen the entire series several times, and my son loves watching it too(of course, he's closer to the aimed demographic than I...) with that said, did M. Night Shyamalan even watch the show!? This is one of the most boring, poorly executed movies EVER! The story lacked flow, the characters were either flat or too dramatic, and the action sequences really felt like bad dance choreography. Watching two guys half heartedly exchange blows(or standing around?) is not intense.. Shyamalan is not an action director, to be sure.

And why on earth did the firebenders need a flame source to bend(except Iroh-and Zuko for a moment)?

It failed as an adaptation as much as a movie in it's own right. I hope it is the last airbender movie.

Epic fail.

Just finished watching Valentine's Day with my GF, we went to Blockbuster earlier and rented 3 Blu Rays. She chose this, I chose Green Zone and we mutually chose Alice and Wonderland. Anyway, back to this:

8/10.

It's a romantic comedy which isn't my favourite genre of film but this is the best one in that genre I have seen. It has a mega cast including Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, George Lopez, Hector Elizondo, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Carter Jenkins, Bryce Robinson, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Queen Latifah, Shirley MacLaine, and Topher Grace.

It basically follows numerous characters lives on Valentines Day and what happens to them. All the stories are intertwined and they all touch upon each other in some way. It's quite Love Actually in that sense. It has some quite genuine touching moments and one moment in particular made my GF shed a tear and had me thinking too. That one moment and the run up to it was well written and something totally unexpected, it was warming.

It got slated by the media in it's reviews, some called the film awful which is a bit harsh as I actually quite enjoyed it. I liked how it's all shot in LA and it has a few really pretty locations which, living in England, would not associate with LA. It wasn't what I imagined it to be like in a good way.

I'd still recommend it to people who like Romantic Comedies. Saying I don't usually like them and yet I liked this one must say something positive about it. Any girl is bound to love this film haha.

Nice, I got two people to watch The Killing Fields. And yes, the doctor, the main character, was actually involved in the whole incident in his life. And even though Eraserhead is black and white, it is still one of the most "WTF!" movies you will ever see.

Eastern Promises - 8/10

Perhaps the most straight forward Cronenberg movie. I liked it

Green Zone

8/10

It's a pretty good thriller. Very Bourne like with it's doses of action and conspiracy style story line. I watched it on Blu Ray and it's quite a grainy picture but I think that's intended, after all it's set in Iraq and I imagine that to be a grainy place with all the sand etc.

I'd recommend this film to those who like either military films or thrillers. The storyline requires a bit of concentration and you'd have to watch it in one sitting to keep up.

Through A Glass Darkly: 9/10

Another one of Ingmar Bergman's classics that you should watch, with the last one I rated being Wild Strawberries.

The Da Vinci Code: 4.5/10

The very first death scene ruined this movie because of how it sets up Robert and Sophie on this wild goose chase and the fact that it's hardly believable. The overall direction for this movie is very clumsy, and although I didn't read the book, I'm not interested in it after seeing this movie. You're better off watching something like The Manchurian Candidate or the Bourne movies if you want a good conspiracy thriller.

The Thirteenth Floor - 8/10

The story is intriguing and it has some great twists but it also has some weak points.

Finally back with my review on The Bounty Hunter.

I would give it a solid 5/10 for some originality but being completely predictable and boring in most parts. Once you have seen the commercials for this movie, you can basically guess what is going to happen from beginning to end. Though I have to say, Jennifer Aniston looks amazing in this movie. Apparently all that money she has paid for plastic surgery has done her well.

Green Zone - 9/10

The first 20 minutes were hard to sit through for me because it was quite silly, although after that the movie became very interesting.

The villain is revealed way too early in the movie, and of course other things are changed as well.

Also, I never did agree with Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. Not what I pictured him to look like.

Reading a brief summary, I have to give Eraserhead a shot :p And Killing Fields, why not

Toy Story 3 - 10/10
- Awesome movie that was nostalgic but had lots of new ideas and a fantastic conclusion

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 5/10
- Not bad, the transformers looked pretty cool but the story was terrible and so was most of the dialogue

Chloe - 7/10

Chloe is a very solid thriller. Extremely engaging and incredibly entertaining, this story is ultimately about human nature and instincts. The film really grabs your attention and visually, it's quite a feat. The minimalistic sets and the way it was shot give this film a really modern and slick look. I feel like I should warn that there's quite a bit of nudity and somewhat graphic scenes but nothing outrageous or out of place.

Moore was absolutely terrific, she has proved her value already but here she delivers possibly one of the best performances of her career. Seyfried was quite a surprise. Her performance was subtle but very efficient and she seems a very promising young actress. Liam Neeson was not nearly as good as he usually is but it's understandable considering his wife died during the shooting of the film.

It's pretty good. Good art direction, amazing costumes and brilliant special effects. It just lacked something though and I can't put my finger on what.

It was a good movie only 3 fighting scenes and 2 shootout scenes but never the less it was still a pretty good movie. I think that Denzel and Mila both did a good job.

House of Games - 4/10

The acting of the leading actress was atrocious, the character's motivations questionable and the ending laughable. It had 1 good twist and after that the movie also was predictable which is pathetic for a movie like this. Matchstick Men blows this out of the water.

I second this.
